View 1 RepliesI am using LINQ to SQL and a third party SDK that supports distributed transactions. When I realize that a pending update will be updating both SQL records and records in the third party SDK, I am creating a TransactionScope with a 0 (presumably infinite) timeout (although I've also tried 12 hours as a timespan parameter). Then I use GetDtcTransaction on the ambient transaction (created by transactionscope) to get a DTC transaction to link to the third party SDK. Things work nicely for about 10 minutes, but after 10 minutes, the transaction disappears and an error occurs. How do I determine why the transaction is disappearing. I suspect it's a timeout because it regularly occurs after 10 minutes even though slightly varying degrees of work have been done at that point. But I'm at a loss about how to determine what terminated the transaction, why, and how to extend its life.

View 16 RepliesI'm wondering, is there a way to update databases of a windows application that is distributed on several computers all at the same time? is it done by using sql server? because I'm developing an examination system that will be distributed on several computers for students to take exams and I'm just wondering if an admin updates a questions database will the changes be applied to all other computers as well or should it be done manually? sorry if I sound stupid but I can't seem to understand this part of my work, I was thinking about switching to a web app since it seems easier, but again this data updating issue is giving me hard time. by the way I might link the application to an internal network, will this have anything to do with updating the databases?

I love to experiment with linqpad, but now my task requires heavy computing power. Trying to do it on my computer is painful. My friend has a much more powerful computer than I -- can I execute some operations from my linqpad on his computer? I don't have RDP access, but I can run any .NET program on his computer.
If it is not possible, then is there any FREE service that provides computing power? Maybe a hosting trial or something. I know that Windows Azure offers a 30-day trial, but it has a very slow CPU module and in my country, MS partners cannot be expected to fix service sites when they go down.

I've had experience with using hashvalues from String objects. E.g., if I have StringA and StringB both equal to "foo", they'll both compute out the same hashvalue, because they're set to equal values. Now what if I have a List, with T being a native data type. If I tried to compute the hashvalue of ListA and ListB, assuming that they'd both be the same size and contain the same information, wouldn't they have equal hashvalues as well?

View 1 RepliesI have a server that runs a thread that computes some data through function X. Then I have a client that communicates with the server and gets results from function Y. Now, both function (X and Y) share a common variable lets say varZ. When function X populates varZ when the thread starts on the server, the results are not propagated on function Y when accessed by the client through Remoting. But on the server side the results are correct in function Y! It's almost like when client calls function Y, it has no idea what is happening varZ is as far as the value set by function X thread in the server.

I need to create an console application that computes the average monthly rainfall, number of months with above average rainfall, and the number of months with below average rainfall, given the rainfall amounts for each month in a particular year. History:I have built my application in Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition. It is a Console Application. After filling in the questionnaire the user gets given results and all this information is stored in a .txt document (Notepad). I want the data that is put in to the application to send infomation to the user's e-mail address. I have been looking around the internet and it says it could do it but it needs Outlook express.
I am running into trouble with some code I am doing for an assignment. The section within the apostrophes (If Then Else) is the section that I am having trouble with. When the user selects a seat type and then clicks the compute button, the wrong cost is displayed instead of an accurate cost.

I'm currently working on an application that allows users to select picture files and then categorize them into folders. Now I'm having two issues that are probably simple to fix but I only have a year of experience with vb so I just don't know how to fix them. The first and biggest issue is that once the user has selected and categorized a file, I want the program to select the next file in the folder that the first file was moved from. This way the number of clicks required is minimized. However I have no clue what I would need to do in order to accomplish this. Also, my other problem is that I want to be able to find the indexof a quotation mark but whenever I put it in the parameter it just reads it as a quote.
View 4 RepliesI am trying to import a bunch of excel 2003 files all with A:H columns and they are under the same headings etc. into a table in access 2003 database. This is a module in access im making. Im using a file search to look for every file that begins with Format (which they all do ) to get at all the files in the folder path. is there a more efficient way to do this? somehow select all files in a folder? and import each to the same table in access? The DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet seeems to take each file path individually so I'm not sure how to get each file name in the folder to import it.

I have VB project and I tried to use PUBLISH feature.It seems to create nicely some kind of setup program, but the setup program does not ask where to copy files (it does not seem to copy filesto target machine "PROGRAM FILES".)Is this setup program somehow different from usual installers?
NOTE: I want that app files are installed to Hard disk( from USB stick source)Is the signing recommended or necessary? My App is pretty simple, its just using access DB + printer api, should I still sign?
