I am trying to use the following stmt in VB and I am getting an error: Open (objFiles(lngLoop)) For Binary Lock Read Write As #hndZip_File On the "Open" word I am getting "Open is not declared. File I/O functionality is available in the Microsoft Visual Basic namespace." On the "For Binary Lock Read Write As #hndZip_File" I am getting "End of statement expected" I originally thought I had to add "Imports Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileIO" but this did not do anything.

How do I read a raw byte array from any file...
Dim bytes() as Byte
..and then write that byte array back into a new file?
I need it as a byte array to do some processing in between.
I'm currently using:

Im trying to read and write to a file in binary.to give an example of what im trying to do i have posted a picture below.the string is 12 bytes long and each four bytes has a float.the one in red is set at 1 and green and blue are 0 giving the read as the overall color. i have been trying to get this well i tried once and gave up but its been awhile.i have this so far but it doesnt work. this is kinda what i got to read the bytes out but its messed for i have been trying everything i could think of

I have an application that works in both 32 and 64 bit, except that on the 64 bit system it can not open/ read/write any files.I know the 64bit file system is different, from what I heard. I've gone through about 16 hours and two packs of cigarettes trying to figure this out. First a little background. I was using 6.0 up until 2004 when I went to prison. I'm out now, and trying to relearn the trade, using VS 2005. I'm currently porting some 6.0 code from another project, SpyCast Webcam Studio, into VB 8.0. It's disheartening, to say the least. None of the old built-in subs/functions work anymore, so I have to scour the forums to relearn each and every function.The section I'm doing now takes a snapshot from the webcam (Video API --> PictureBox --> Save as Jpeg), then upens the file to upload it to the server via HTTP POST. I've been using this code in SpyCast for years with no trouble, but I spent many hours trying to piece together the right code to open the binary file to read its contents. I pieced together two methods I found around the forums, one using FileStream() though the code I found wasn't for binary files, even though it said it was, so that code doesn't really work. Method two uses Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileOpen() and works better.
Here's the kicker. By the time I run through the rest of the rigamarole of uploading the file, by the time I read it on the webserver, it's *slightly* corrupted. It's a valid Jpeg, no errors, but the picture looks like when I use to watch the Playboy Channel when I was a kid scrambled with weird colors and whatnot. [code] Each "chunk" is basically one "line" of the file. It looks like a single LineInput() return is the text between two carriage returns. Am I correct? I tested this with a flat text file, and it looks true. However, That one input line returns the text or data with the carriage returns *stripped*! ***?!? =( Fine, I have no problem adding my own vbCrLf to each LineInput(), if I were opening text. but this's binary. A character could be Chr(10) or Chr(13), both of which are removed from the original file contents.So I could very well need to use something other than LineInput(), but I haven't found any other examples on the web using this method.

I have several visual basic 2010 programs. One of the programs I have installed the program on four different windows 7 computers. I am working on an application that starts a few threads every second. The threads don't do much, and everything seemed fine. I monitor the number of threads running, and I have never seen it higher than 4.
Last night I started the app and this morning I had this.
System.AccessViolationException: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.
The threads can make changes to two List(of Strings) and I had SyncLock's surrounding the code that did that. It has been running for several hours again and all seems well.
My question is that I found a place in the UI thread that was copying the list without the lock. Could that have caused the error?
how to debug something that isn't going to fail conveniently?

I am trying to read a 16bit binary file (tif image) and pixel values of the image ranges from 1200 to 4500. I tried to use BinaryReader using ReadUInt16 but I get EndOfStreamException Unhandled error. ReadByte method works fine with an 8bit tif file. I do not know how to read a 16bit image file using binaryReader. Shouldn't I use ReadUInt16 since values of pixels range from 1200 to 4500?

I have been googling this and have not come along a working solution for an entire day. I don't know anything about binary data types (as I've never knowingly used them) and I'm trying to write a binary value that I see in the registry, to the registry. Now, all I see is the following [shown below]... and if I try to pass that as a string to the RegSetValueEx in the WinAPI and of course it errors out...
I do not know what 'numbers' I need to pass into the lpData As Any, argument of RegSetValueEx (i tried a bit array) in order for it to come out as the following [shown below] in the regedit. I really have no idea, and my tests to place random numbers in the bit array just produce corresponding random "figures" as visible in regedit that I do not understand how to 'tie' them together logically. here is the culprit!

1. I have to create a file. 2. Then I want to write a string into the text file.
I can do part 1 no problem with: File.Create(strFilePath) But when I try part 2 to write to the file it won't allow this as it's still being used:
sw = File.AppendText(strFileName)
sw.WriteLine(strCode)
sw.Flush()
sw.Close()
My code in part 2 works fine on a file that hasn't just been created.
How do I release the file from the File object?
There doesn't seem to be a .close or .flush option.

I am writing a program that acceses a file in VB/Visual Studio 2008 on Win7 and running it as a user who has admin credentials. I am opening the file with the following code:
Dim Input As New FileStream("C:FileTest est.txt", FileMode.Append, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.None) To test to make sure I can't access this file, I tried to open it with Notepad and I was able to and got no errors. I wrote a new value using Notepad and even saved it and I didn't get any errors form Notepad or my VB program.
I then went on and treid to open the same file twice from my VB program as:
Dim Input As New FileStream("C:FileTest est.txt", FileMode.Append, FileAccess.Write, FileShare.None)
Dim Input2 As New FileStream("C:FileTest est.txt", FileMode., FileAccess.Read, FileShare.None)
And I receivded an error in my VB program as expected. So the FileShare.None switch kind of works. Although I was still able to open the file with Notepad while my VB program had it open. I was aslo able to open Windows Explorer and reame it and even delte it while my VB program had it "open", in the write mode no less without my VB program knowing anything about it.
Why are other applications able to ignore the FileShare.None switch? Seems pretty useless if that's the case. And a huge secruity problem

how I can lock a file so it will be completely written to by the first application, then unlocked for reading by my second web ticker app? My IDE is VB 2008. The second app has a ticker timer which I can modify accordingly. However, I'm still concerned whether the web app will encounter a situation where it competes for file access.
