Error - The Form Referred To Itself During Construction From A Default Instance, Which Led To Infinite Recursion
Apr 14, 2010
I have two forms. A main form and then another form that you can change settings in. Now when I click on the menu item to get to the settings form I get this error. "An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The form referred to itself during construction from a default instance, which led to infinite recursion. Within the Form's constructor refer to the form using 'Me.'"I've tried these codes.
frmSettings.Show()
Application.Run(frmSettings)
those didn't work so i tried these
dim settings as new form = frmSettings
settings.show()
dim settings as form
[code]....
and those didn't work. I'm using visual studio 2010 Pro.

I desperately need someones help on this one, as I'm completely stumped where this error comes from.
System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The form referred to itself during construction from a default instance, which led to infinite recursion. Within the Form's constructor refer to the form using 'Me.'" there is The (Name) property, which represents the name of the Form class.This property is used within the namespace to uniquely identify the class that the Form is an instance of and, in the case of Visual Basic, is used to access the default instance of the form.
Now where this Default Instance come from, why can't C# have a equivalent method to this.Also for example to show a form in C# we do something like this:
//Only method
Form1 frm = new Form1();
frm.Show();
But in VB.Net we have both ways to do it:
//'First common method (used slash because editor wouldn't format it properly)
Form1.Show();
//'Second method
Dim frm as New Form1();
frm.Show();
1) My question comes from this first method. What is this Form1, is it an instance of Form1 or the Form1 class itself. Now as i mentioned above the Form name is the Default instance in VB.Net. But we also know that Form1 is a class defined in Designer so how can the names be same for both the Instance and class name. If Form1 is Class then there is no (StaticShared) method named Show().So where does this method come from.
2) What difference they have in the generated IL
3) And finally why C# can't have an equivalent of this.

I am using VB at the moment and VB has an annoying feature called "Default Form Instance", which creates a default instance of a form object when you reference the form class instead of form instance.[code]....

When an instantiated class calls a method in the parent form class, VB.NET starts a new instance of the form class instead of calling the method on to the active one.How do I tell it that I have just one instance of my form class, or that I don't want to create a new instance of the form and just call the method on the already active form?

I am using background worker to report progress on the screen. In the Main.vb I have the following
Public Sub report(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.ComponentModel.ProgressChangedEventArgs) Handles bwlistener.ProgressChanged
Dim message As String = e.UserState
logRTB.AppendText(message & vbCrLf)
End Sub
When I call this from Main.vb I use:
bwlistener.ReportProgress(0, "Some status text goes here")
It works great. The problem is when I try to call it from any other module in my project.
When I call it OtherFile.vb:
Main.bwlistener.ReportProgress(0, "Some status text goes here")
It doesn't work... The program doesn't crash. Debug goes through everything but no output is actually shown to the end user.

I've tracked a recursion error down to one subroutine, So when my form loads, it populates some listboxes from a database; any one of these causes the error:
ListboxQuery("select sculptname, sculptid from sculptures;", CloseSculptList, "sculptname", "sculptid")
ListboxQuery("select distinct eventtype from events;", EventTypeList, "eventtype", "eventtype")
'etc, etc
And here's the subroutine (it's querying a MySQL database):
Public Sub ListboxQuery(ByVal queryText As String, ByVal resultObject As Object, ByVal resultDisplay As String, ByVal resultValue As String)
'queries the database for a 1- or 2-column list of values to display in a listbox
Dim myCommand As New MySqlCommand
Dim myAdapter As New MySqlDataAdapter
[Code] .....
The error is the standard recursion error:
An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The form referred to itself during construction from a default instance, which led to infinite recursion. Within the Form's constructor refer to the form using 'Me.'
This is weird for two reasons: One, as you can see, the subroutine doesn't refer to the form at all, so I don't see how it could cause a recursion error, and two, I wrote this subroutine almost a year ago and it only caused this error last week.

I've got a menu with checkable items that appears on two different forms, and I'm making sure the two forms always have the same check states, so Form1 would have something like this:
Private Sub mnuWarnings_CheckedChanged(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles mnuWarnings.CheckedChanged
'when one of these is checked, the other should also be
[code].....
But that yields this error:
An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: The form referred to itself during construction from a default instance, which led to infinite recursion. Within the Form's constructor refer to the form using 'Me.'
There definitely aren't any references to Form1 within Form1.It only occurs when I use CheckedChanged--if I use mnuWarnings.Click, it works fine. And it only occurs in Form1 (the main form); CheckedChanged works fine on Form2.

I developed an app, tested on few computers and all seemed fine. But now, some people suddenly get an error, which I can't repeat on my computers. Part of the exception:
** Exception Text **
System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'NumoABC.functionsBurtuSummas' threw an exception. ---> System.InvalidOperationException:
The form referred to itself during construction from a default instance, which led to infinite recursion. Within the Form's constructor refer to the form using 'Me.'

The If Me.Created = False Then is because while the form is loading, some events fire the updatePersonDataHandlers() sub, but I don't want it to happen until form is fully loaded. In the module functionsBurtuSummas line 2
Module functionsBurtuSummas
Private f As MainForm = MainForm
I have many modules who work with the MainForms' controls, so I use a private variable f to refer to the MainForm.

Code:
p = -1
Try
ListBox3.SelectedIndex = p
Catch ex As Exception
ListBox3.SelectedIndex = -1
p = ListBox3.SelectedIndex

Just cycles through my listbox without exiting the try. It keeps having an error causing the catch again.

I have a web application that allows a user to view family members.
When the user clicks on a family member, it displays the member's basic info. There is also a grid displaying that family member's related family members. (e.g. User can click on the Father link. From that popup, they can then click on the Father's Father link, then click on the Father's Father's Grandson link, etc.).
To reduce the number of popups that appear on the screen, I want to prevent the user from continually clicking on family links past three members.
What is the best way to keep track on how many data forms have popped up? Or can this reliably be done with a web application?

I'm having this problem with my code and cannot seem to get past it although it was working fine before. The error is "An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Object reference not set to an instance of an object." The code is:
CODE:
I am trying to get information to be pulled out of a database and show in text boxes on another form (frmviewsdets). The error occurs when it gets to the line frmviewsdets.txtsnumber.Text = rdr("StudentNumber") and even when a breakpoint is applied there it just moves on to the next and so on.
I have tried to show frmviewsdets before I pull the data out of the database beut I get the same message.

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified.
This error is doing my head in.I have a client running Windows XP SP3 logged into a domain. It is running MS VB 2010 Express to access the server.I have a Server called dataserver3 which from the client, I can do a start, run "\Dataserver3" and it comes up and yes I can browse to the Test.mdf file, which is a new database that was created using MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard edition.

I've managed to make an application at home using a serialport emulator and connector that will read text from a file on my desktop send it to com1 and then my connector program will merge com1 with com2. In short my program works at home but when I connect it to my device it appears the data in DataReceived is a fraction of what my simulator setup at home is producing, which apparently is completely normal according to all these threads I've read here.

I must say personally, the WithEvents system is, shall we say, open to extreme false sense of security, so to speak. I like a lot of automation in my code, and tend to provide ways to do things manually, with a "default" behavior encoded. However, as I have just discovered, the withevents doesn't HOOK the event delegate until after creation. So even when you do New MyObject(), if an event is triggered during the Sub New() process, the delegate hasn't been assigned yet, and thus the event (which in my current situation is extremely important) never triggers. which begs the question the point of the WithEvents other than removing "AddHandler" lines from procedural code. Sure it saves on typing, due to code completion, but if that's it, that isn't much of a benefit. One would think that using the WithEvents would allow me to do:
PUblic Sub New()
MyBase.New()
RaiseEvent MyEvent()
End Sub
Tragically, this does NOT work, which royally screws up my lazy loading techniques and other such tricks that were supposed to make my code simpler to use, and instead has made things 10 times more complex, as I have to specifically alter class initialization sequences to be outside of class instantiation. (which should be one in the same, imho).Jaeden "Sifo Dyas" al'Raec Ruiner

PS - Don't mark answers on other people's questions. There are such things as Vacations and Holidays which may reduce timely activity, and until the person asking the question can test your answer, it is not correct just because you think it is. Marking it correct for them often stops other people from even reading the question and possibly providing the real "correct" answer.

How you might construct an array like the following: one column or entry would be a single integer, like 0, 1, 2, 3, 4... - i need this as an index of each one's position in the list the second would be 0 or 1, or true or false the third would itself be a list of integers 0,4,5,2,7,2,5,2...
So all together one entry would be {0; 0; 0,4,5,2,7,2,5,2} while the next might be {1; 0; 6,8,2,5,2,3}
I'm having a terrible time wrapping my head around this. It's mostly the third column which is actually a list in itself, that is giving me trouble

I am trying to implement Selection Sort in vb.net using recursion. Problem is that I keep getting stackoverflow if the array I want to sort is 1000 elements. I can't find the problem. I don't know much about stack overflow or how to check it. From my research the problem could be infinite recursion but I check for that and exit the sub.Here is the main code:
Public Class SelectionSort
Inherits DefaultSort
Public Sub New(ByVal num As Integer)
[code]...
Everything should work as far as I know. It works on an array of 10 elements and an array of 100 elements.
