Exit Function No Default Return Value?
Nov 1, 2009
in my following code, i get the warning doesn't return a value on all codepaths
Public Function getbacktrace(ByVal backtrace As Integer) As StackFrame
With New System.Diagnostics.StackTrace()
If .GetFrame(backtrace + 1) Is Nothing Then
exit function
[code]....
if i change exit function to return new stackframe, anyway, why doesn't Exit Function automatically returns a "dead" stackframe?

Can a function return a value byref instead of the default byval? That is to say, allow me to directly edit the variable that it is retrieving instead of just giving me a copy of that variable.Right now I'm trying to write a function that will return, based on what the user has selected through a combobox, a particular setting (eg. My.Settings.somethingHere). I then want to be able to edit the setting directly through just calling the function. Is that at all possible?

Is there anyway to have a class that can return a default type without specifying the property.
If I had a class that had a few properties and one property returned a string value and others returned additional types, could I do the following?
Dim StudentGrade as new StudentGradeClass
'call and get default property
Dim CurrentGrade as string=StudentGrade
'instead of this
Dim CurrentGrade as string=StudentGrade.Current
The reason I am asking this is when I have classes that have other classes as properties and would like to just get a default return value,.

I have wrote a function which validates a masked exit box date format. I have entered into the Mask property 00/00/0000 which on screen translates to __/__/____, great. If I get an invalid date I want to clear the content and reset the focus back giving a message box warning. [code]It all seems to work until I then try to enter a new date. The first number a press seems to push the mask characters to the right and then the rest works. So if I entered 01/01/2009 I end up with _1/01/2009.

Just so it's known, this question is mostly academic, even though I tried to use the concept in a real-world solution. I realize the example is contrived, but I believe the concept is valid.I want to write some fluent code like this:
[code]...
I realize that I can't force an anonymous type into a specific type (like implementing an interface or some other class), and I don't want the overhead of defining a specific class just to match my desired fluent name with the actual method name. So I was able to make the code work like this:
copy(my_first_file).to.Invoke(my_second_file)So there is no IntelliSense or type awareness there, and I have to include the Invoke in order to have the method run. How can I get more type safety and exclude the Invoke method, under these constraints: Anonymous Type returned from Method No additional classes or interfaces Preferably, I do not want to pass in another parameter to the copy() method that tells what type to return, unless copy becomes a generic method (but I think that means defining another class/interface, which I don't want to do)

I am having trouble with some code I am writing to handle an Excel spreadsheet. The idea is that the dialog box is displayed which invites the user to select an Excel spreadsheet. Once they have done that, it is opened and a separate function checks to see whether Sheet1 exists returning Nothing if it is not found. The intention being the try/catch block picks it up and gracefully does nothing. The problem is that when the function returns nothing, the dialog box is still displayed and the sub doesn't seem to exit. [Code]

I want to exit a recursive function once the a number is repeated in a list. i.e. In the following code I have 'AST' as a list. How can I stop adding data to the list once the first number repeated?
The result in the below code is:
1 2
4 5 1 2
4 5
1 2 4
5 1
2 4 5
1 2
4 5 1
1 3
3 5 6
3 3
1 3 3
5 6
3 3 1
3 3
5 6 1
5 6
1 5 6
1
What I want for AST to be: 1 2 4 5 1, because 1 is repeated.
Just Add to your form a richtextbox and a button.
Public
Class Form1
Dim TheConnectionsValue(6, 6)

Dim NumberOfNodes

I'm having a bit of a problem getting my application to close properly. Basically I have one main form from which all other forms open. If a user tries to close that main form, I want to bring up a MessageBox asking if they want to exit the application. However, when I try to do that it asks the question twice. It seems that the Application.Exit() is triggering the FormClosing event again for some reason, but I don't know of another way to exit the application. BTW, the main form isn't the startup form so I can't use the option to close when the startup form closes.

take a look at the following Code:
Private Sub btnDebug_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnDebug.Click
Dim d As Date
[Code]....
The Funtion ZZNull always returns Nothing, so IsNothing(d) in the calling method should evaluate to True.
But it does not !
When you run these lines, then you will see that IsNothing(d) evaluates to False

So the program I am writing validates the controls on the page on button_click.
I want to write a function which checks which step the program is at (0-7) then return something depending on whether or not it validated.
My plan was to return the control which was not valid.
Private Function ValidateInputs() As Control
Select Case wizardStep
Case 0
[Code].....
1. could I return the names off all the controls which did not validate?
2. should I be returning a control type or would something like a string be better?

I've created my own version of HexToDec() to properly handle the negative flag. I saw other versions online that used "Not(value)" to do the Pos/Neg inversion, but that does not generate the proper value... No, it's not the most elegant my any means. But I couldn't find anything online that actually worked.
Long story short, I want to return NaN in the case that the function is passed a string that is not a valid hex string...
How do I do that? Everything I've tried generates a compiler error... (assign return value to double.nan, assign return value to non-numeric, etc)
Existing function is below:
Function HexToDec(ByVal hexStr As String, Optional ByVal signed As Boolean = False) As Long
Dim lngFinal As Long

Now I have a sub to validate a bunch of textboxes and combo boxes.I previously used many IF statements to validate and pop up different messageboxes and Exit Sub in every IF statement. But I heard that too many Exits will decrease the efficiency and they were not recommended to use. Instead, nested IF is better because it will let the process naturally go to the end. Then I found out that if I use nested IF,it will be hard to read, since messageboxes are all separated from conditions.

I am trying to understand why the two code samples behave differently. I always believed the If() function to mimic the If language feature. Or am I looking at a behavior of Nullable(Of Integer) that is causing this?

Dim pcFilter1 As Integer? = CInt(PC.SelectedValue)
Else
