A have a Setup and Deployment Project for a VB.Net application. The install seems to work fine except the shortcuts created cause the uninstall to run instead of pointing to the .EXE file.

The 'DefaultLocation' for my application is set to '[ProgramFilesFolder]MyApp'. Now I would like the user to select what drive to install this application to. I know this is accomplished through the 'Installation Folder Selection' dialog, but I want the user to be able to select a drive only, not the entire path.
My question is how do I capture what drive the user selected from the 'Installation Folder Selection' dialog and use that drive letter to tack on to my 'DefaultLocation' variable?

I'm working on deploying a visual studio 2005 windows application executable with an embedded crystal report using visual basic. It seems to install everything just fine, however, the system dsn isn't being setup.
How do you configure a setup project to setup the system dsn during the installation?

I've created a setup project for a VB.NET 2010 application that I've written. The application, and the installer both work fine on my development machine. The installer works fine on other machines, but when I run my application it immediately crashes and dies without telling me anything useful. I've tried it on Windows 7, Windows XP, and Windows Vista machines... and all had the same problem, so I think it's more of a package configuration issue than a machine-specific problem. Here's the most useful information that I was able to get out of it:

I have created installer from Visual Studio Package and Deployment, but after successful installation, the installer files (like dlls, images and all supporting files) modified date or even creation date has been changed and all have the same date depends on the date of installation. Is there a way I can preserve or maintain it's original creation/modified date?

I installed the latest version of Toad yesterday. When I restarted Visual Studio 2008, the project that is my installation package for my application would not longer load. The message I get in the output window is "The Visual Basic Deploy Deployment Package ({CCD045E8-6236-4B3D-B820-97F7DD14C77C}) did not load because of previous errors." When I try to reload that project, I get the following error: " The operation could not be completed. No such interface supported" I tried to repair the VS installation, but that originally failed. The Deployment folder under Common7Tools was currupted so I ran check disk. A few bad files and clusters were found and corrected and the second run of check disk ran clean. I uninstalled Visual Studio and then reinstalled it, but am still getting the same error. I tried reinstalling .Net 3.5 before the reinstall of VS as well. I tried creating a new installation project, but that failed as well.

I have three Setup and Deployment problems that are making me even more crazy than I have been accused of currently being.#1 - My project(heavy on text file streamreaders) installs as it should on the target machine but I can only run it on said machine as administrator(works great)... I have tried changing the permissions on the installed project and that did not seem to work. Error - blah blah cannot access [filepath]? ([filepath] is correct and verified. Ideas? Can I set permissions in the install itself? How so?
#2 - #3 (Basically the same questions)I have directed Setup to install a Program Menu and Desktop Icon and it does so. The problem is that the icons are non functioning. I dont see where I can set an actual filepath for them in the Setup menus?A good tutorial on VB 2010 Setup and Deployment wouldnt hurt if anyone has a link.

When I run the setup.exe, I am getting a different version than when I run the actual application.exe. Why is that? The setup.exe seems to run an older version."I have no particular talent. I am merely inquisitive."

So I have a simple Outlook Add-in I've developed and that works, i.e. when I
build the project the add-in is available to Outlook and is loaded. Works great. And so to distribute the add-in here at work I want/need to create a setup deployment project, which I've added to my add-in solution. I followed the walk-though from here: [URL]

For my .Net desktop apps I usually create an MSI installer (I create a 2nd project in my solution, a Setup & Deployment project) and I zip the setup.exe file with the <appname>.msi files together and put them up for download on my site. The installer will go through the process of asking where they would like to install the application (it creates the needed shortcuts and everything).
Right now I'm looking at adding a feature to some of these programs where it'll periodically check it's corresponding xml file on my web server and see if there's a newer version of itself available. I have this portion working just fine, where I'm stuck is that I would like to have it download a separate msi installer to update itself.
The idea is that it would download this different msi file, execute it while the app closes itself. This msi would not ask any questions, it would simply update the needed files in whatever location the first msi installer put the app. When this updater msi is done, it would just re-start the application. How would I go about making an msi installer that doesn't have any prompts and installs the application where ever the first msi installer put it (where ever the user chose to install it to)?

I have a VB Windows Application in Visual Studio 2003 complete with it's own setup project. What I would like to do is during the installation of that project is to install a shortcut icon on the desktop that points to the location of the .exe file that was just installed on the user's machine. Unfortunately this option in the setup is not easy to find (at least to me) on Visual Studio 2003. What would I need to do in order to get that shortcut icon to pop-up automatically?

Is it possible to create a custom start menu shortcut link?
The only possibilities I see in the setup project are shortcuts to folders or primary output.
Update:
What I ended up doing is creating a custom action on commit that dynamically creates the link using Windows Scripting Host. Then on uninstall, removing the link.

Does anybody know which version of Visual Studio 2010 contains the full set of Visual Basic SharePoint Templates? I am about to embark on a project to create Visual Web Parts to be used in a SharePoint report.
At the moment I am using Visual Studio 2008 and even though the WSPBuilder is installed none of the relevant SharePoint templates are present.Having searched SO and the web, most advise to install the templates via the Visual Studio command prompt: devenv /installvstemplates
Alas the Visual Studio command prompt is also missing from my VS2008 installation. So, the question remains: which version of VS2010 contains what I need for pain-free SharePoint development? There is a rather large price different between VS2010 Professional and VS2010 Premium, so can anyone tell me if the cheaper version (VS2010 Professional) contains all the Sharepoint templates?

I am just wondering how I can add Direct X references to Visual Basic in Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2. I cant find them in the .NET reference list, or the reference list, or anywhere. I downloaded the Direct X SDK for August 2009, but I can not add the .dll files to the reference list. Is there anything I can do to add them? I need the references for programming reasons.

Have built a project and associated it with a Setup&Deployment Project. The S&D project needs to contain 2 main folders (under User's Desktop) with various formats of files (xmls, txts, dlls) inside them and several subfolders. How can i copy/import these 2 folders and there sub-files/folders into my s&d project?
When adding them in the usual way, they are copied and defined a source path onto the current pc. You can understand what errors this might create when an another targeted pc does not contain those files to the exact location. Is there any way to copy them locally or somehow import them?
