Hooking Another Program's Calls To Winapi Functions ?
Oct 22, 2010
I have been trying to build a game bot in vb.net.One of the main problems is getting access to the text the game prints on the screen so I have been trying to hook the games calls to the windows api drawtext and textout functions.I have been hunting for examples of how to set up a hook in vb.net for a long time without any luck.I have found it impossible to translate examples in old school vb, C++, and C#.For convenience's sake I would like to use the freely available deviare and/or easyhook libraries.

1) Is it possible to access the Excel mathematical functions without actually opening Excel?
I was thinking of through a DLL WinAPI call or maybe a delegate function or smaller program?
2) Does anyone know of a MS link or area that gives instruction on "how to" use every function of every Windows DLL at all?
Or for all those that Microsoft have chosen to document online at least.

Hint: this one might sound complicated, because I am trying to give as much info as possible, but I suspect that I just want someone to tell me "yes, you are correct".On this legacy system, which dates from 2002, the user visits a web page and uses an RFID reader to read a tag number, which is then written to an input field on the web page.
The only s/w that comes with the reader is a custom DLL, nop .exe. The very sparse documentation insists that only MSIE be used and that all security relating to ActiveX be disabled.When I look into the source of the web page I see calls to functions in the DLL.Now, here's the fun part: I know zilch about ActiveX, I have to make a minor change to the DLL _but_ the VB6 source code has been lost, so I guess that I have to recreate the (seemingly very simple) DLL from scratch - this week.
Decompiling the DLL shows me the functions (locateReader, getTagVal, closeReader). However, by decompiling I can't really know the number or type of the parameters, nor the return values ... and if anyone knows the API they are refusing to share it, but basically it all seems to have been lost in the mists of time as companies went bust, were bought & sold, merged & demerged and the initial DLL might have been written by an external guy, but no one knows who.So, can I get the function params & type from the ASP page source?I see things like
Reader = new ActiveXObject("<dllName>.Reader");
Reader.locateReader();
tagVal = Reader.getTagVal();
Reader.closeReader();
I would say that none of the fn()s take parameters, that closeReader doesn't have to return anything; it looks like locateReader doesn't return anything either, so I guess that error handling will have to be in the DLL (loop forever with a popup demanding that a reader be attached; and getTagVal seems to return a string.

I am trying to send data and arrays using System.Object and System.Event. Lets say I have 4 pieces of data: date, y(1),y(2),y(3).
sub main(...)
Dim date,y(1),y(2),y(3) as integer
Dim obj as System.Object
Dim args as System.Eventargs
How do I organize obj with all the integer data above so I can send it to main2.
main2(obj,args)
end sub
Sub main2(obj as System.Object,args as System.Eventargs)
End Sub
And how do I apply this to (ByVal sender as System.Object, ByVal e as System.EventArgs). I am using VB.net 2005.

In our VB6 applications, we added a few utility functions for tracking the amount of time spent in a function. We did this to track performance bottlenecks. Basically, how it worked was there were two utility functions:
StartTickCount() and EndTickCount().
You would pass the name of the function in each, and the functions would use a dictionary to get the tick count when StartTickCount() was called, and then subtract the tick count when EndTickCount() was called. This wasn't perfect because it didn't of course take into consideration that calls to get tick count takes time, etc, but basically it worked for our purposes. How to make sure to call StartTickCount() at the beginning of each function and EndTickCount() at each exit point:
Private Function SomeFuction() as String
' indicate the function started
StartTickCount("MyClass.SomeFunction")
' some logic that causes the function to end
[Code] .....
Anyway, is there any functionality built in, either through the VS 2010 debugger or in the System.Reflection namespace, to do something similar in VB.NET? Basically, what I want is to log the number of times each function is called, the total amount to time spent in that function, the average number of seconds spent in that function, and the maximum amount of time spent in a single call in that function.

Im making an application that is keeping an eye on an external application that does not have an API. I'm interested in getting notified when the external application changes its main window title. My idea is to somehow register a hook that will notify my application.

Yet still be able to update and control them.

What the Win32 API is? I have looked around but no where really outlines what it is. Is it basically a set of procedures, outlined by Microsoft for programmers in order to get services from the operating system? In essence is it the equivalent to making system calls abd and library calls in UNIX? And yes I now Windows makes library calls too.

I am Automating IBM iSeries Emulators using VB.net, created GUI that embeds the external iSeries Emulator Window in a WindowsForm Panel using the "SetParent" API .. To communicate with the iSeries Window I use the SendMessage API to send Key's to the Screen. I am aware of the sendkeys.keys in .net, but this way I dont have to SetForegroundWindow and reactivate my Form.

I want to wait for and close a modal form (a popup) from another application, as soon as it appears. I want to do this from VB.NET, but suggestions in C# should be easily translateable.
I can hard-code the modal popup's caption in my app, since it's long and unique. What I want to do is simulate either the user clicking on the close ("X") button on the form, or a click on the defeault, tab-order 0 button of the form. Either would work.
Maybe I need more info about the modal popup other than the title bar's caption? In any case, it's safe to use it as an unique identifier of that modal form. I also want that code to terminate checking as soon as the first event of closing the popup happens.
I believe it's trivial, but I can't find any ready info on that. Microsoft says I should not send WM_CLOSE to the modal popup, since it will call DestroyWindow() instead of EndDialog(), but to be honest I don't even know what "sending WM_CLOSE" to the "window" means =/

I have written some C/C++ code that uses the winapi functions CreateFile WriteFile SetFilePointer etc. to read & write some large (>4 GB) binary files. Some colleagues who are more familier with Visual basic than C, want to modify some of their existing code to call my C code functions.
I have turned my code into DLLs that I have successfully called from other C programs. I have also created a small C DLL that doesn't use the winapi functions & called it from a small VB program.
What I haven't so far been unable to do is pass the HANDLE type variable between a C function that uses the winapi functions & the VB program that call it so the VB can call another of my functions & pass the HANDLE.
In my attempt to do this, the declarations in the header file for two of the functions in the C DLL are:

When I step through the VB code in debug mode there is no problem with calling OpenSegyRW, but at WriteToSegy I get the error message:System.Runtime.InteropServices.MarshalDirectiveException was unhandled
Message=PInvoke restriction: cannot return variants.So what am I doing wrong & is there any way to pass the winapi HANDLE type between VB & C code? BTW indents etc. get lost when I paste my message into the forum. I hope this is decipherable.

I have a timer in winforms that looks for a specific OK dialog on my server (it clicks OK on a third party application that runs out of memory, then restarts it -- there is no other work around). So, when I remote desktop the server and the remote desktop window is active (the actual remote desktop window is active, not the actual window that has the OK that has to be clicked. I can have a window that has nothing to do with the OK, and it works), the program works as it should. It finds the window of the OK, then clicks the OK button fine. When I am not in remote destop, or when the remote desktop window is not active (or selecte) it finds the window and finds the OK button, but cannot click the OK button.

I have been working on a project for some time now and I am stuck. I am trying to sense when a navigation software speaks so i can mute the volume of everything else on the computer.
my problem is that i cant properly sense the audio of the software. i am using windows 7 and vb.net. i have done a good amount of research, but i have not come up with an answer.
i am almost positive that i need to intercept the win32api call of the software to trigger the mute that i will use. i dont know how to do this, all the information i can find that is even close to this subject is for 98, nt and 2k.
does anyone know of any books (or websites) that contain information on this subject?

I am new to using VB2010 (and coding in general). Also brand new to these forums . Okay so I am making a program that: allows the user enter the number of customers served for each of 12 months into an array. The application should calculate and display the following statistics: total number of customers for the year, the average monthly number of customers, and the months with the highest and lowest numbers of customers. Use inputBox to get user input. Do not accept non-numeric or negative numbers.
The problem that I am having is that I do not know how to display which was the best and worst month. I imagine I need something that targets the highest/lowest number and finds the text in the corresponding index but I'm not sure how to do this.

I've been fighting for weeks now to make a simple music playback program. It would function much like Windows Media Player without the visualisations and playlists. I'm writing this on a Win7 box, but it needs to work on XP and newer.
I say fighting because I'm severely annoyed at how MS has worked some items and it's taken many days to go through everything only to find that it doesn't work.
I started by using WMP in VB Express 2010 and having it play my music. Simple, but not portable. I copied my .exe to a WinXP machine and it blew up. I copied it to a different Win7 machine and it doesn't run (I can double-slick all day, nothing happens,
no log entries, nothing....)
Then I find that there is an issue with the GUID of media player on different computers, and it'll most likely fail to run when you try to use it on other machines than the one the program was built on.
So I gave up on that.
I then figured I'd use DirectX. It's on XP and newer already, and is supposed to be backwards compatibile so if I build my app on Win7 it should still run on XP and such. I did that, and it works fine on the machine I built it with (again). My shuffle works,loop/repeat works, got my own version of a playlist and it all works. I copy that to another Win7 box and it doesn't run at all. It's setup as .NET 3 so I can be sure of compatibilty with WinXP.
For grins, I gutted all the code in my VB app involving calls to Directx and built that. It runs fine on other computers, including my XP test box. So I know the problem revolves around DirectX somehow.[code]...
