Client Server Application That Uses File Sharing
Mar 3, 2009I want to build an application(the client and server) that the clients would be able to see and modify only certain files on the server depending on their credentials. For example, a specific client can read/modify a word file, but another cannot. And the server should specify which client has which rights. After a client has made any change in a file, every other clients should be notified by email. I've read some articles about .Net Remoting but I still don't know how to make a client see/modify files on the server.

Apr 28, 2011I have several different applicaitons that were originally created with Visual Studio 2005 / .net framework 2.0 / Windows XP that got common settings from an App.Config file on a network share. Each of these applications has an app.config file with the following:

I am now trying to make these applications work in a Windows 7 / .net framework 3.5 / Visual Studio 2008 environment and can't seem to access the settings in \fileServerconfigcommon.app.config in the same way the old environment allowed. I'm wondering if there is some new way to do this. I need to have the applications read their settings from a common file on the network share (having the applications take their own copy is not accpetable).

Aug 21, 2009We have a set of assemblies which implement web services operations.To build the client proxies, we first build and deploy the web services (assemblies and ASMX files) on the server.Then we use wsdl.exe to point to the ASMX endpoints and generate the classes for the client proxies.I've seen that it is possible to create the proxies from wsdl files (instead of asmx endpoints) using wsdl.exe or disco.exe.Is there a tool to generate wsdl files or event better proxy classes directly from the server assemblies without the need to use a web server?
1) This is a somewhat large project that has been in development for over a couple of years now. The decision to use ASMX web services was made before the existence of WCF.
2) I already thought about writing our own proxy generator and that may be an option if we don't find a tool that does it.
3) We still want to bind to the WSDL contract. What I'm trying to avoid is having a dependency on a web server during the build process.
4) We already auto-generate the proxies in our automated build which runs in TFS Build and that has not been an issue per se. The issue, as I was told, is having to split the build in two parts: server & client. There may be alternatives to avoid the split using some fancy MSBUILD task, but my knowledge on that matter is limited.
5) I do expect the build to brake on TFS Build if the client side code and server side code don't match during compilation. That should have been addressed on the developer's machine before check-in.
6) We have strict control over the server and the client parts. This set of web services serve as a back-end to a Click Once Windows Forms application. Everything runs on an intranet. Every time the contract changes, it is done in tandem with a new version of the client application.
7) WCF is not an option in the short term for this set of web services. When I joined the project over a year ago I was given the task of creating a new set of web services for interoperability with other internal systems. Those web services were designed upfront to be easily upgradable to WCF once upper management allowed us to use WCF. I'll have to take a look into svcutil.exe, but if it does what we need, I'll have another point in trying to convince upper management to adopt WCF.

Oct 14, 2009Im trying to build my first N-Tier web application. And it seems like im doing it wrong. Ive been kinda working out of this book, but to me it doesnt seem like the right way to do this. In the book the guy builds User and Data centric objects but everywhere I see ntier everyone is always talking about BLL and DAL ive seen nothign on UC and DC objects.Right now I have Interfaces and serializable structures, user and data centric objects. The data centric object does all the validation and connecting to the db, as well as returns any violated rules, but when I once i started pulling it all together it just doesnt seem right.Ive already wrote a ____ load of code and now am kinda stuck. I dont know if i am doing this right and dont want to continue writing any code if this is all messed up.Ive been reading as much as humanly possible and im still just a little confused. I mean I understand the concepts of seperating the logic into different layers and tiers and all that but as far as my implementation of that I just feel somethings a bit off.

It crashes instantly on every machine except the build machine - I'm fairly new to programing so any pointers as to where I would start would be great.
If I install VS2008 on the test machines it runs fine...

Build A Database Application For One Of Assignments?
Jun 3, 2011I'm a Quite new to Visual Basic 2008. I have to build a database application for one of my assignments and one of the problems I'm having is to build a form that will be used to search a customer from a Customers table. The database is from access2007.
I have to have 4 radio buttons on the form which will be the options to search the customer by, so I can search by Customer ID, Customer Name, City and postcode. When I select one of those options I need to enter the phrase I'm looking for within a text box I have called TextBoxSearch then press a command button to perform that search but I'm not sure how to do this.
The customer ID is the 1st row, Customer name is the 3rd row, City is the 4th row and the postcode is the 5th row. How do i tell the program to go to that row and grab the detials based on the text entered from the text box? and display only those detials on the datagrid view?

The tool is looking up against one table in the database (OLEDB) so I wanted to pull in all the data from the table into a dataset (when the form loads) and perform the search on it. I'm not sure how to search through datasets... this is the code I have now:

Jan 7, 2011In VB.NET, my application is quite simple, and it accesses many images and creates a list with them.The images are in my application's Resources folder.The images are accessed in my code where I typed the path, in my PC, how to reach said folder.Works like a charm, my project displays the images etc.Now I go to Debug->Build.Now I go to the bin folder, release folder, and find my application. I upload it.I share the download to a friend.My question is, will the images my application should show will appear? Considering the path I created in the code was manually written?
