Installation - VB - Keeping A Program That Is Running On A Network Updated
Feb 5, 2010
I'm looking for suggestions on keeping a program that is running on a network updated. Installation consists of 15 users, each have the program on their local pc, but they all access same date from sql server. I am looking for a clean method that would allow me to update one folder on the network and for each computer to get updated when they run the program and the programs sees a later ver on that folder on the network. (Obviously I can do this inside the program itself since it won't allow being overwritten while opened.)

I'm about to pull my hair out with this program. I need the following program to keep a running total of the total amount due by a customer for books bought. The exercise required the use of a BookSale class with 3 attributes(a quantity, price, and total due) and 2 behaviors(a default constructor and method that keeps a running total). Here is the code for the class:
[code]...
My problem lies in the program keeping a running total. The total due is displayed fine for each quantity and price but not the whole running total. For example,if I enter 1 as quantity and 2 as price and click the Add to Sale button, the Total Due value, which is $2.00,is displayed. However,if I change the quantity to 2 and price to 4,which comes out to $8.00,the $8.00 is not added to the existing $2.00. I feel like I'm missing something elementary and it's driving me crazy. I would work on it some more but it's already after 4 AM here and I need to get some sleep.BTW,this exercise is from a college textbook. However, this isn't an assignment that is due. I just got bored and decided to work on a chapter we didn't have time to get to.

I use to do programming in VB3.0 years ago and decided to try it out again with VB2005. Basically I made a chat application for my coworkers so they can chat at their desk. It's a shared network and the program is pretty simple. Basically the chat gets stored in a .ini file and that part works fine, but I want to be able to show the users who are currently in the chat and I am not sure how to go about doing this, when you login to the chat it takes your name which I would like displayed and when you close the application to remove the name from the list while keeping everyone elses updated.

I have a program written in VB.net 2003 that are folks run under alternate credentials. Inside the app there is an option to open a UNC path to a network share. We were running Windows XP SP3 and IE6. The code is simple just a call to the explorer.exe with /root,\UNCPath. After installing IE 8 onto the machine this no longer works. Best I can tell the code is still working but now being executed in non interactive mode so nothing opens up. You can however see a new spawned explorer.exe running under the system account for each attempt at opening a UNC Path. Any ideas what IE8 could have done to cause this behavior?

I seem to be having an issue with Building my application. THe programs builds just fine, but when you install the program and then run the program it wants to act like its configuring the program, prior to running the actual program.I get a windows box that pops up stating its configuring the program and then it runs. But it only happens when I access the program through the shortcuts that I have the program create when it installs. If I go directly to the program directory and click on the program there, it starts just fine.

We have a windows service running under a network account that calls and runs an ActiveX exe. The exe is running under the local system account, not the network account of the service.

I am trying to download a file off my web server (easy) but the file its downloading is the updated version of the file running. I finally was able to program my automatic update software the program simply downloads a .txt file from my web server, reads it, and if the the version = (new version here) then download. If not, then go to another form. The problem I am getting though, is when the version is outdated, the file will go to download the new .exe and it gets and error saying "File already exists"

We have a VB.NET applciation that is run from a mapped network drive. This works fine on all PCs expect those with Windows 7, on those we get the following: "application generated an exception that cannot be handled" System.Security.SecurityException was unhandled If the application folder is copied locally and run from there it works fine. I assume it is related to Windows 7 netowrk security but not sure how to work around it.

Our engineers use an application developed internally to perform risk assessments at a customers site. Sometimes on larger jobs a group of engineers will all carry out risk assessments together and will all need access to a single database file to all work on at the same time.

I have an application I've written for some of the people at work and there is one bug that I have no idea how to solve. The application is multithreaded so that the main form can be updated with new information as it comes in. Throughout execution, several other forms come up as well (one at a time).Every so often I get reports that the program freezes. When I check out the program it looks like the main form is not being updated(checkboxes are see through, textboxes are blank) and the main form can't be moved around. This only seems to happen sometimes when the program is left for long periods of time (+30 min) and only on the released .exe and never in the debugger(as of yet). I've tried leaving the program running overnight and it had no problems.

There is a .Net executable (with a group of DLL's etc) that up to 100 people will be using simulatiously during the course of the day. Is it still acceptable/good practice to have all the users just have a shortcut to the network path for this executable? Or would it be better to copy the .exe, .dll's, etc locally to each users machine?

I want to work on a project I have in mind and this envolves saving data which would need to be updated every time the user exits the program. I suppose I need to know how to save a file to a blank text document, and how to get the application to read the information when it is called for. I believe I need to set delimiters or such, the helpfile is useful, but limited and some information is not listed at all.

Computer.FileSystem.FileExists(Environment.GetFolderPath(ProgramFiles) to get the Program Files directory in my application. The problem is that when running on a 64 bit version of Windows 7, I am getting the Program Files (x86) directory, not the 64 bit directory. As far as I can tell, everything is compiled as 64 bit. This code is actually in a DLL that is accessed during the installation of the program.
Is there any way to get the 64 bit path?

Basically I want my program to do the following, it's all theory atm but i'll put it down psuedo style..
WHEN formloads CHECK
does userdetailsexist
IF userdetailsexist THEN
loginform.show
[code].....
Get it? First time the program is opened, the user creates an account with it and a file is created stating that an account has already been made, and then the user logs in.Second time its loaded, if that file exists, don't show the NEW USER page, and allow the user to log in, checking their details against the local file. Now whats best, a txt file? A db?Whatever method as I need all the settings chosen in the program to be there every time it loads up...Also, Is it best to make this program have to be installed so it has access to all the resources on the computer?

I'm working on the VB.NET VS 2010. We are creating a software distribution list. Currently a user needs to go to the Add New Programs wizard to view their available programs and then click install. We'd like to automate the clicking of the "Add" button to and kickoff the installation via a script.

I'm a beginner. I recently developed an application in C#. Now I wanna develop its setup. I read a few articles online, followed them, found it very easy. I also changed the default location of application folder from C:Program Files to C:. My application folder is containing a few folders besides exe and dlls which I added manually.
Now here the problem starts, when I install the application and change the location say from c: to d:, my files (all files including exe and dll) are going to user's given location. But my folders (all folders in application folder) are going to c: (which is default location given while creating setup). But I want output files and that folders at same location
