Plan is to host this server so people can login to use the the application and verify they have a valid account. I would like to host all the account information in SQL due to the possiblity of hundreds of users at any given time. I also need the ability to add data to the database for users registering for the first time. The SQL server will need to be able to access the SQL Server databases remote via WAN.
View 1 RepliesIt's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework?It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database.To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed.What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.

It allows me to create the .dbml file, but in order to drag items from the Database Explorer window to the design surface, I first have to get my database listed in the Database Explorer!(this is a remote SQL Server database - not a local .mdf)
I already have a good, working connection string to the remote SQL Server database, but that doesn't help me when I'm trying to generate the DBML at design time.
Can anyone tell me how to get my remote SQL Server database identified in the Database Explorere window? When I try the "Add Connection", I am limited to Access, SQL Server Compact, or SQL Server Database File. If I try to enter the IP address & port of my DB Host I get a 'database file does not exist' message. Doesn't seem to want to let me point to a remote DB server...

I'm trying to make a little game using VB .NET 2008 Express Edition.The game is comparable to the Everybody Votes channel on the Nintendo Wii (if anyone has ever seen it). You can submit questions to a online database. Then, if the question is accepted, users can vote on it and other accepted questions. The questions are on a timer and when it hits a certain point (after a couple of days or so), the questions can no longer be voted on and the results are displayed. Since the details of the users account, the questions and the results would be in a database online, the program would also track some fun little aspects of their voting habits and stuff.
Onto my question though, how difficult would it be to pull something like this off? Especially for someone with no experience using an online database with VB .NET? I'm not foreign to the basics of VB .NET by any means, I've taken several courses with it in college and worked with offline Access databases, but taking it online is something completely new to me.

Then next to the line in the textbox it will put the email address of the recipient and a forward slash. So look at it this way.

When that finishes then the next email that comes in would receive line 2 in the textbox and line 2 in the textbox would change like above. I think i can use a message queue from the tools in vb. And the email client is gmail.

Visual Basic 2010. For a school assignment i had to make a application with XAML in it. I made the tutorial Math Quiz when starting up Visual Basic 2010. This was a Windows Form application that only needed VB programming language. Now i made the Math Quiz and finished it but there is no XAML included or what so ever. View 2 RepliesI would like to know the basics of roguelike development in Basic, Visual Basic to be more specific. As stated in the title, I have Visual Basic 2010 Express Edition (fully paid). I do know about variables, if statements, basic math operators (Such as addition and powers), advanced math operators (such as PI and Sqrt), nested if statements, functions, subs, and all of the other basic stuff about Visual Basic. I am most effective with console applications, rather than windows form applications. My favorite roguelike is ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery), which, in my opinion, is much better than nethack. I would like to make a game similar to ADOM, but I don't even know how to make the player move around the screen and collide with walls. I am also most effective with Video Tutorials, rather than written tutorials, just cause I'm not a big reader. I have seen most of thenewboston's video tutorials on Visual Basic more than once, and I have all of the basic stuff nailed down in my brain. If anyone at all can help me, or even team up with me in my VB.Net project ATOR (Ancient Temple of Redhold), it would make me so happy I would burst out in tears of joy! Btw, I have created a bunch of unfinished text-based games before in the game engine ADRIFT 5, so I do know the basics of game development.
