Mapping Network Drive Remotely?
Feb 19, 2009I'm developing an application that needs to Map a network drive for a domain user logged into a domain PC from a remote location. I have tried numerous different things with different levels of success but none with the required functionality. - First, I used WMI to create a process that would run Net Use with no luck: Net Use would ask for a user name and password to connect to the share instead of using the User's credentials.- Second I generated a script (wshNetwork) that would be copied to the remote PC and used WMI to once again create a process that would run wscript in command prompt to execute the copied script.
The script would run successfully (as evident by code placed to fill in a text file when the script completed) but the network drive was not added.- Third I created a program that would be copied to the user's PC which would map the drive using Windows Network API. Again, I used WMI to execute the program as a proccess with the results the same as the script. The application would run successfully but the drive was not added.- Fourth, I edited the user's registry to add the drive. This worked, however the mapped drive was not usable through Windows Explorer without a reboot.
Unfortunately, one of the requirements of the application is to avoid rebooting the remote PC.I have arguably had the greatest success with the following:- I used WMI to generate a scheduled task on the remote PC that would run a script (wshNetwork), an application (Win API) or the Net Use command to map the drive. All resulted in the drive being properly mapped and visable through windows explorer with the files accessable. However, the new map would be labeled "Disconnected Network Drive" and the drive could not be removed (error: network connection could not be found) and the driver letter could not be used without rebooting the system. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can do this? Unfortunately I can't use wshController to run a remote script because a majority of the PCs on the domain are not configured to use it.

Mar 8, 2010i have a NAS drive that is mapped to my system..My application will copy files to the drive but the only problem is the drive has a sleep function on it therefore when i try to copy files to it and it is in sleep mode, it says the folder does not exist (drive still in my computer but just with a red X on it)is there a function to make ir ready ? the only other way to do it is to double click the drive icon in my computer then it wakes up... but id rather not do this as its a pain.

Aug 23, 2011I am working on a project using VS2010 SQL2008 and I saw an ODD behaviour , First let me tell you that the app runs without any problem in my developing pc (Windows Xp sp3 32bit)But when I was trying the application in another pc (Windows 7 32bit)I got this exception: A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to SQL server.The server was not found or was not accessible.Verfiy that the instance name is correct and that SQl server is configured to allow remote connections.
Now what is weird in this exception; Is when the application reaches the DataAdpater.Fill(dataset) line I got this exception but when the app reaches the DataAdpter.Insert(....) It runs without any problem .
And what is more weird is that I noticed that the dataset that is used in the previous insert procedure can later be filled with dataAdapter.Fill(...) procedure which it was giving me an exception before .
I tried these things as a solution:
1)Checked SQlBrowser running..
2)No aliases to Sql server at all to remove...
3)remote area connection--OK
4)TCP and UDP port 1433,1434 exception in firewall
5)Unistalled my only antivirus Norton
6)Added Tcp/IP ports in Sql protocols
7)My connection String is : onnectionString="Data Source=ALISQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=PALMSDATABASE;Integrated Security=True"
8)Also tried using Sql Server authentication (user Id and password)

Feb 4, 2010I am trying to remotely connect to servers on a network. However, an exception occurs and I can never connect. The code I am using to connect to the servers does work because I have had someone else test it. The exception is shown below. Is this a setting with VB or with my computer?

Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) The project is written in VB.Net 2008. Production server uses SQL 2008, Dev Server uses SQL 2000. The application has been built and published.
Prod Connection String: strCN = "server=SGMAGNCPQ03.;Initial Catalog=APO_Tax;Integrated Security=True"
Dev Connection String: strCN = "server=S04423711940995.;Initial Catalog=APO_Tax;Integrated Security=True"
The Problem: When I change the connect string from dev back to prod and try to run my app, I get the above error message. If I reboot everything works fine but if I switch the connect string from prod to dev and try to go back to prod, I'm back to the same problem.

It ran without any error but when I opened SSMS, I could not see my file attached to the server. Also, I tried to make a connection, but it says file does not exist but when I tried to re-run the above code, it says File already exists.Something wrong with my way of doing it? I want to see it attached with the instance of my SQL Server Express 2005, using SSMS.
