Method For Threading In A COM Exposed Assembly?
Jan 5, 2011
First let me say: I am still very inexperienced with VB.NET so there is probably something simple I am missing, or at least that's what I'm hoping. I've been writing a COM exposed wrapper class to provide access to a web service in a legacy VB6 application. I got everything pretty much working as I wanted - all the COM properties, methods and events are showing up in the VB6 app - but for one minor detail: when I used a method which made a call to the service, it was obviously only working asynchronously, so I couldn't update a progress bar or do anything else while waiting for a corresponding assembly event to fire.

When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it.It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text. What I end up seeing is:
First: "PerformLookup Time: 40:842"
Second: "initIndex Time: 45:873"

How would I go about passing parameters to a method? I would want to do the following:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
ReceivingUdpClient = New System.Net.Sockets.UdpClient(6767)
Dim receiveBytes As [Byte]() = ReceivingUdpClient.Receive(RemoteIpEndPoint)
Dim ThreadReceive As New System.Threading.Thread(AddressOf receiveMessages(receiveBytes))
ThreadReceive.Start()
End Sub
Private Sub receiveMessages(ByVal receiveBytes As Byte())
'INSERT CODE

End Sub

I'm returning to my old question since I've never been able to find an answer.
For example I have a class library A with a method Method, is there a way to load this assembly from my application B and execute this method (A.Method) without putting a reference to assembly A?
My idea isn't that the idea behind System.Reflection?
So far, I can only load the assembly, I can even enumerate classes, members, etc, but I cannot figure out how to invoke methods and read property values.

I am getting a
"Method not found: 'Boolean MyCompany.LibraryAssembly.SomeFunction (System.String)'"
Exception/error when running a VB.NET console application. The method is part of an external assembly and it is definitely in the assembly. The error only occurs at runtime when I go to enter the function that calls the method. I have the assembly referenced by my project and I am not copying it locally. Intellisense shows no errors, and neither does the compiler. I am loading the assembly statically not dynamically. I reference the from a local folder (not the GAC) although the same version is also available from the GAC.

Is there any class or specific method for getting non-primitive types in an assembly? FieldInfo.Gettype() will do for primtive types but what about non-primitive types?

For example, assume that in my assembly, in Namespace A, Class B, there is an instance method with the following signature: void Test(string someString, int someOtherParm, string someOtherString ); This method is called multiple times, from multiple places in the assembly. I would like to be able build a list of all invocations of this method and the value of the someString/someOtherString (assuming they are hardcoded). In other words, I like to extract a list of calls like the example one below, if they happen in the assembly somewhere: Test("some text", 8, "some other text");

Our company has an app that load their components by System.Reflection.Load (By the way, an awesome technique )But, we start to monitorate the application and detect a extrange grow up of memory (actually when our application still all day on air, their allocate memory on task manager is 200 MB plus memory) And all of our components (60 plus DLLs) is load by this technique.My doubt is how to deallocate this assemblies or how the best way to deallocate any assemblies loaded by the System.Reflection.Assemblie.Load method?

In my project I have a module called Functions where I have all my functions, suprisingly. I also have in there a few structures that I have made.One of those structures is called Point3D which is just used for storing x,y and z values.It looks like this:
Module Functions
'...More stuff in here...
Public Structure Point3D[code]....
However, apparently I am exposing type 'Functions.Point3D' outside the project through class 'EditBuildings'.But I dont get it because the structure is public the class is public and the constructor is public. If I make the constructor private then I can use it, but then I cant access the constructor from other forms.

I have an ActiveX component (for mapping) I am using that I need to do an action on a mouse click, but the event isn't exposed. Internally, the class seems to fire an event, as it has a LastPointClicked() method that you can call that returns the map coordinates of the last point you clicked on. I am trying to find a way to center the map on the point clicked. I could fudge it with some kind of timer that just checks to see if the LastPointClicked has changed and center if it did,

Right now I have a file *.Keys.Set which tells the application (on open) to style itself according to that new style. I know this file could be passed as a command line argument into the application. I'm trying to write a wrapper to a service, which will be used by an existing VB6 project. I've got most of the basic framework working, except for one important aspect: I can reference the wrapper in a VB6 project and subs/function calls etc. work as expected, but events do not. The events are visible in the VB6 app, but they never fire.
VB.NET Code:
Public Event Action_Response(ByVal Status as String)
Public Function TestEvent()
RaiseEvent Action_Response("Test Done")
[Code]....
So, the cmdTest button code prints 'Done' as expected, but the Action_Response event doesn't fire. Is there something else do I need to do to get the event to fire?

About what audio components are exposed by the .net framework?
Can I work with .wav files? What kind of things can I do with .wav files as far as vb .net is concerned? Can I record? What should I look for when looking for info for .net related audio at msdn. Where else can I find info on this?

limit the default events, properties and methods exposed from a UserControl so it only displays to the developer the new events etc that I code myself.What i mean is I have created a UserControl with a panel and 5 buttons, written 1 Public Eventonly at this stage, I have placed an instance of the control on a form in a new project, but in the drop down menu that comes up after say (myUserControl1.), there is a massive list of options, I don't want those to appear.

I am loading an Assembly using Assembly.LoadFrom() as the assemblies are located in a different path from Application Base directory.
Dim oAssembly As Assembly = _
Assembly.LoadFrom("C:\MyFolder\" + ddlXlate.SelectedItem.ToString() + ".dll")
And I consume a Type from that assembly without any problem:
oXML = CType(oAssembly.CreateInstance(sBaseType + ".XlateContainer"), _
XlateBase.XlateContainer)
However, the problem occurs when I try to use a Type from this assembly from within another method like the one below:
oComboBox.DataSource = _
[Enum].GetValues(Type.GetType(sType + "+ItemEnum," + sAssemblyName))
sAssemblyName is the one I loaded using LoadFrom() actually. After it said it cannot find the assembly, I used AssemblyResolve event which solved my problem :Subscribing AssemblyResolve event :
AddHandler AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyResolve, _
AddressOf MyResolveEventHandler
Event Handler Method:
Private Shared Function MyResolveEventHandler(ByVal sender As Object, _
ByVal args As ResolveEventArgs) As Assembly
Return Assembly.LoadFrom("C:\PSIOBJ\" + args.Name + ".dll")
End Function
And I thought maybe the error occurs because it cannot find a dependent assembly defined in assembly manifest file I loaded using LoadFrom() already but when I checked the args.Name, I saw it was trying to load same assembly and after that it worked without any problem. So basically a type in the loaded assembly cannot be found before the event adding change.
My old code was using AppDomain.CurrentDomain.Load() and Assembly.Load() methods and they were working fine without the AssemblyResolve event. I was able to reach types in dynamically loaded Assembly from every where within the same AppDomain.
LoadFrom() can find dependencies automatically within the same requested assembly path and that couldn't be problem as everything this dll needs was there. So at first it looked like a AppDomain problem to me as it looks like it seems it can reach assemblies from Load context instead of LoadFrom context and I am now using LoadFrom context.But now it seems I should pass oAssembly instance evertwhere to use any type from the loaded assembly?Doesn't it load the assembly where I can reach it everywhere (same AppDomain) using simple Type.GetType(...) method?

I'm wanting to include a system tray icon in my WPF project, and found this resource:[URL]..which looks like it will work beautifully, but it's written for C# and I'm using VB.net for this project. I downloaded his project and built the notifyicon as a DLL, then added as a reference to my project.
It throws up an error: Unable to emit assembly: Referenced assembly 'Hardcodet.Wpf.TaskbarNotification' does not have a strong name So I'm trying to figure out the best way to proceed. Do I need to strong name it, or is there a better way to do this?

I have created several DLL (.NET) libraries that are used in several projects. In these DLL libraries I want to know/retrieve which assembly (EXE) calls/uses the library, so if possible I want to know info like assembly name (EXE), strong name, version number, etc.
NB: Examples may be in C# or VB. I use both languages.

I have written a .net assembly which plugs into to a third party COM application. The .net assembly is COM visible to the third party application. However this .net assembly references other regular assemblies. If I put these assemblies in the GAC the COM visibile assembly sees them without a problem. However for various reasons I do not want to put them into the GAC but I cannot get my COM visible assembly to see the other assemblies when they are in other locations. I have tried putting them in the same directory as the COM visible assembly. I have tried putting them in the same directory as the third party app's exe but neither of these work.

Since, it's possible for anyone to name an assembly starting with 'System', checking for 'System' is not a satisfactory solution.
Alternatively, if that's not possible, how about checking the modules in an assembly?

I am building a dll-Assemby A which references another Assembly B. Assembly B is strongly named and installed in the GAC of my development computer. An other computer will not have assembly B installed in the GAC.
Question: If i handle strongly named assembly B like a private assembly and copying it into the bin-directory by specifying local copy = true in the properties-window, will the programm run on the other computer?

One of them is giving us trouble in only 1 spot out of the 4 spots we use it at:The trouble spot is a windows form project that uses reflection to dynamically load some DLLs that run long running processes. One of these long running processes is an agent that relies on one of our vender DLLsWe're getting the missing assembly exception at the point where we first enter a function that references the library. I already checked the silly things such as if we had forgotten to move a reference from the old version to the new version, but that's not the case. I also checked the bin directory of the project and the assembly is there.
