In vb.net 2005 how would one referance a control as variable and change it"s properties. Such as in control X visible = True. Tryed string manipulations that did't work.
View 1 RepliesThe code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that.When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

I have a user control that I'm adding to a webpage dynamically. The ascx has a couple of controls that I want to have access to at runtime. I can access the ascx itself, but none of the controls on the ascx are available. I have tried adding a simple public variable and also tried adding a public property to the ascx, but I am unable to get access to either of them at design time (compile errors). I added the following to the code-behind of the ascx control:

I have many textboxes that I need to reference dymanically. The controls themselves aren't dynamic, just the way I need to reference them.I've got several text boxes say:
txtMe1
txtMe2
txtMe3
...
txtMe100
I will need to randomly change one of the properties of the edit boxes. So lets say it picks a random number between 1-100 which is 56. So, I would want to change the background of my 56th edit box to:
txtMe56.Backcolour = Color.Gray
The only way I could think of doing this would be to have one giant select case statement to evaluate the random number. But, that is really dirty and not the best peformance wise (this could potentially get called hundreds of times) so was wondering what my options are?I tried to concatenate the random number to my generic control name 'txtMe' but it throws a wobbler. I essentially would want the following to worK:
dim iNum as integer = 56
txtMe & iNum & .Backcolour = Color.Gray

In asp.net 3.5, I am using a login control which has an id. When i set the id's font to bold, it sets all the fields to bold. for eg., the login control has "Username", "Password" & "Remember Me" and i want to set only the username & password fields bold and leave the remember field to normal.

it lists form names in a listbox + when a control is selected, it lists hierarchical controls in a treeview. by selecting a control in the treeview you can view its properties in a propertygrid.
here's the problem: how can i use the propertygrid to actually persistently change those properties?
at the moment you can change properties in the propertygrid but it doesn't change the control's properties, either persistently or otherwise.

how I can reference a report variable in the Report Properties Code Window of a local report? I have tried Variables!Claimant.Value (for a variable called Claimant) but I get an error "Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference." I have tried qualifying it with Report. and also with the report name in front of it but I get errors with this also.I have the variable CLaimant defined in the Variables section of the Report Properties.

View 1 RepliesI'm making a control and I am trying to finalize my design time properties grid. I have several List(of Class) items as public properties and when I click on the design time menu (while testing the control) there is the word "Collection" and a button with an ellipsis (...) that brings up a neat pop up with the buttons Add/remove and all of the public properties of the collection's class on the right hand side. Basically for a non-collection instance of a class (with public properties) I'd like a similar button to show up. I know I could put all of the properties in the main control class and group them, but I like the pop up box feature. Anyway to duplicate this? (think font grid item etc.)

What I've done is create a User Control Library (Project) and I've added a single User Control to that project. The control contains a single FlowLayoutPanel, and I created a Property on the control itself to pass the FlowDirection from the Control to its FlowLayoutPanel child.
Build, reference, component appears in the Toolbox and everything works fine, but the property on the control does not appear in the Properties window when I go to edit it at design time.
I would like to be able to set Control visual properties such as color, boarder, flat style, etc. on the base class of the control so that as I add new instances of the control, each instance inherits the visual properties of the base. I have tried using Application Settings but it appears as though I need to reference an application setting manually each time I add the control to a form. This is a Windows Form question.

Can a usercontrol inherate an application defined class ie.. could you inheritance a classic rect class into a user control to add the hight and width properties to the control without having to do all the coding all over again? Currently I just declair a private instance of the class within the control and then encapsalate. It would be nice if I could just inherit all the functionality of my classes into controls designed to implament the classes.

I come from C# (use VS 2005, .NET 2) and I know that when I declare a private variable I can "extract" from it the corresponding "property". In VB.NET I've declared a lot of properties (in the diagram class designer). Now am I forced manually adding the corresponding private fields?

I am upgrading a very large project from VB6 to VS2008. I have several forms with dozens of combo boxes on each form. I use the same combo box names for each form and want to fill them from a module with different items depending upon the calling form. In VB6, I dimensioned a public variable - FormName as object and called Set FormName = frmMyForm1 on Form Load. In a module, I was able to write the following code:

I cannot make this work in VB.Net. When the form loads I call FormName = Me. If I dimension Friend FormName as Object, I get the error message that Public member combobox1 on type MyForm1 not found. If you are attempting to access members on a late-bound object make sure it is declared public". If I dimension Friend FormName as Form, I get an error that says "combobox1 is not a member of System.Windows.Forms.Form".
I have tried both CType and DirectCast to convert the form variable from Object to Form with no success. I also tried creating a public array and storing each form name in it.
I am working on a little program (game) is called Pig latin. I created a sub procedure and I passed the word to be converted by value and the piglatin word byref.Now when I call the procedure in the button click event I get the wavy green line under the variable passed by reference but the program works ok.
