I have the following code from a textbox leave event:
Private Sub txtdebt_Leave(ByVal eventSender As System.Object, ByVal eventArgs As System.EventArgs) Handles txtdebt_0.Leave, txtdebt_1.Leave
Dim txtbxName As String = eventSender
CType(eventSender, TextBox).BackColor = System.Drawing.Color.White
search_index = Val(VB.Right(txtbxName, 1))
End Sub
I would like to assign the name of the textbox to the variable txtbxName.
I know it's within eventSender as I've seen it when drilling down but how do i get it out??
I'm having trouble tracking down what is wrong and causing the above error. This only occurs when saving the design view in VS 2012. The code builds and runs fine.Full error text:Code generation for property 'CompanyValue' failed. Error was: 'Property accessor 'CompanyValue' on object 'ContactViewUC1' threw the following exception: 'Object variable or With block variable not set."

I'll put some C# code below that should explain what I'm trying to do. I just don't know how to do it in VB. Additionally, for future ref, if you could tell me what this process is called

i mostly use C and assembly, but i thought i would give VB.NET a shot. i used to use VB6 all the time, so wanted to see how different this is. in VB2010, i'm trying to modify the pixels of a Bitmap object and then make it show up in a PictureBox on the form. i get no errors, but this code does not show the new bitmap after it runs.."disp" is the name of the PictureBox on the form.[code]

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:
newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class
flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class
Code example:
Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......
Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.
Code example:
' property names are in the string array fieldNames
'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj
'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....
Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?
How can I create and manipulate Objects on form with my vb code?By that i don't mean toggling the visibility.
View 6 Replieshow I can reference a report variable in the Report Properties Code Window of a local report? I have tried Variables!Claimant.Value (for a variable called Claimant) but I get an error "Reference to a non-shared member requires an object reference." I have tried qualifying it with Report. and also with the report name in front of it but I get errors with this also.I have the variable CLaimant defined in the Variables section of the Report Properties.

View 2 RepliesI'm working on a Hazardous Materials label printing program. One of the options is to do an "NFPA" label. Since there are 4 values required with 4 or 6 options, the ratings are entered via radio buttons in a group box. That's working okay. I display values in the NFPA diamond as they're entered: left quadrant blue, top quadrant red, left yellow, bottom red. I'm having trouble with the label in which the rating will be displayed on top of a jpg diamond for the white. In this quadrant the text can be up to 4 characters. I can accept the text going into an adjacent block a little, but the corners of the label overlap into another quadrant/color. I reduced the font size which solved the overlap problem but the font is then too small and looks terrible. I tried to make the background of the label transparent to let the color come through correctly but that's not a valid value for label.background. I'm figuring that the transparent background is the best solution. What can I use that will accept a transparent background so the color shows through?
I'm trying to set the transparent property via label properties properties, not via code. Here's the code if it makes any difference:
Public Class NFPA
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Close()
End Sub

I want to build a MVC helper function for which I pass a Entity Framework object and have it build a select. Generally speaking I tried something like this:
Public Function RenderSelect(ByVal helper As HtmlHelper, ByVal sSelectName As String, ByVal aItmes As Array, Optional ByVal sTitleKeyName As String = "name", Optional ByVal sValueKeyName As String = "id") As String
' open select
[Code].....
However, it isn't working. It would be great to have a way to do this and pass the current entity object.

Now I have the need to get a current value from a bindingsource in a property of a user control. In a previous thread I had tracked down the "Object variable or With block variable not set" to the return in the Get block of a property. At the time I was only using the Set so I just commented out the offending code until I needed it.
[Code]...
The error does not occur during a system compile, only upon saving the container object of the user control. As I said the Set works correctly, only the Get causes the error.I would like to know what I am missing/misunderstanding and am open to other suggestions of handling retrieving the current value of a bindingsource in a user control.
i had a class called Tag with a structure like:

I'm writing in ASP.NET 4 / VB.NET. I am querying an MSSQL database and sometimes have records come back with no results...so I enclosed the call I was making upon the results in an If..Else clause to set a default value if the database comes back with no results...but now I am getting this "Object variable or With block variable not set error". Here is the relevant code:

This is part of some code that will run without user interaction once it's spinning away, and I need to create a unique object from some items found in a StringCollection, naming the objects using information found in the strings stored in that StringCollection.

View 4 RepliesThe code below works for the class that I hard coded "XCCustomers" in my RetrieveIDandName method where I use CType. However, I would like to be able to pass in various classes and property names to get the integer and string LIST returned. For example, in my code below, I would like to also pass in "XCEmployees" to my RetrieveIDandName method. I feel so close... I was hoping someone knew how to use CType where I can pass in the class name as a string variable.
Note, all the other examples I have seen and tried fail because we are using Option Strict On which disallows late binding. That is why I need to use CType.I also studied the "Activator.CreateInstance" code examples to try to get the class reference instance by string name but I was unable to get CType to work with that. When I use obj.GetType.Name or obj.GetType.FullName in place of the "XCCustomers" in CType(obj, XCCustomers)(i)I get the error "Type 'obj.GetType.Name' is not defined" or "Type 'obj.GetType.FullName' is not defined"

Dim x as New Form1
x.Show
I've added some OptionButtons to set the StartPosition of the Next Instance of Form1 as well as some Labels that display the Top, Left, Width and Height properties when the new instance of Form1 is Shown.

I come from C# (use VS 2005, .NET 2) and I know that when I declare a private variable I can "extract" from it the corresponding "property". In VB.NET I've declared a lot of properties (in the diagram class designer). Now am I forced manually adding the corresponding private fields?
