View 12 Replieswhat i need to do is open a txt file, read line by line, decode each line into an array and display. Now all works ok apart from one line.
sTextLine = objReader.ReadLine() <-- Value of string cannot be converted.

Dim objReader As New System.IO.StreamReader(sOpenFile.Text)
Dim sTextLine As New ArrayList()
Dim sText As String = ""

Any code I could get that would Open + Close a .bat or .cmd file? Not ALL .bat / .cmd files that are open, but just ONE (runserver.bat / runserver.cmd).

I am having issues with people not closing an important file in excel.I have a new vb.net based application that i want to close the excel file when i prompt it to. The application checks for specific named files in a hidden folder on a timer event, (that all works fine) how do i tell it to close a file that is already open.All threads i have read say things like this:
Dim XLApp As New Application
Dim WkBook As Workbook = XLApp.Workbooks.Open("C:Book1.xls")
Dim Sheet As Worksheet = CType(WkBook.Sheets(1), Worksheet)
[code]....
I am trying to save the text file in this path:"C:Test est.txt" and when the file is already opened I need to check whether the file is opened and I need to close it before writing it to the file.[code]...
View 3 RepliesI am using Visual Basic 2010 Express and attempting to get information on how to Open, Close, Read and Write a disk file in Windows using VB. I have attempted to use help on the home page of Visual Basic 2010 Express with no results. It does not give me any instruction or sample.
View 3 RepliesI am using about 5 different filesystemwatcher routines total. I am using the following
filewatch.NotifyFilter = NotifyFilters.CreationTime Or NotifyFilters.LastWrite
AddHandler filewatch.Created, AddressOf addfile
AddHandler filewatch.Changed, AddressOf addfile
filewatch.EnableRaisingEvents = True
However, there is one problem with it... whenever I open a file and change stuff, then close it without saving the changes, the events still fire. I am opening excel workbooks in code, then use xlsWB.Close(SaveChanges:=False) to close them, and the event still fires, where the file isn't really changed so it should not fire.
I'm currently in the process of building a text editor type program, and have run into a brick wall. I haven't done VB in years, so I may just need a little reminder on some things. I have coded everything so far as far as opening files, saving them, changing fonts, colors, etc. However, I'm looking to add a Close button to my menu strip that will just close the currently opened file, and not the entire program, while also ask the user if he/she would like to save before closing the file, and then if they select yes, it will show the save dialog, and if not, it will go ahead and close the currently opened item.
View 2 RepliesI wrote a program that writes to a new created file a line of text. Anytime I try to open the new created file, I see a dialog box titled "Inconsistent Line Ending". I do understand why I receive this message. I wrote this program in VB.NET.
View 1 RepliesI'm reading a text file with StreamReader, line by line. If a condition is met, then I do an operation and then start reading the file again from the first line. I realize I could close and then re-open the file, but surely this would be very slow.
I could do this easily in VB6, but pulling my hair out trying to do this in vB.net. It seems that 'Seek' is the function to use, but it doesn't work.
I've seen other examples, where it works, but you must open it a different way -- with a file number.
Imports System.IO
Dim I as Integer
Dim LineText as String
[Code].....
What kind of code would I need to open a text file and add a line of text at the end of a file. IE "C:UsersAdministratorDesktopfile.txt"...??? Then save it of course.
View 4 RepliesI'm trying to read an .rtf file one line at a time but I'm clearly missing something!The file contains 3 lines and I want each line to end-up in a different RichTextBox, so:
Open File
RichTextBox1 = 1st Line in File
RichTextBox2 = 2nd Line in File
RichTextBox3 = 3rd Line in File
Close File
What am I not understanding? I've tried using LoadFile to load the whole file into another RichTextBox first as I got the impression that RichTextBoxes are indexed - but what I got was strings not .rtf format. I've also looked to see if there's an equivalent of the text-centric ".ReadLine" and nothing seems to fit the bill.
I my old vb6 i use the tipical Open "c:somefile.vbw" For Output As #1 ecc...and loop into txt file line by line....Now i'am new in vb2010i need a little project in vb2010

Just need to get the path then control this using the vb.net binding
In a program I'm working on, I want a "Loading..." dialog to close when it can't log in to a site using the username and password provided by the user. Basically, I have the code set up right because the function it is supposed to carry out when that occurs does work, but for some reason it ends up in some really weird stuff happening. In the Loading form, I have it set to do "Form1.Show()" and then "Me.Close()", assuming it would simply show the login form and then close the Loading form. However, when this happens, the Loading form closes, and then for only an instant Form1 shows, and then the Loading form shows and Form1 closes. This happens forever until I stop the debugging, and I can't seem to figure out why. Am I using the wrong method? What exactly does Me.Close() do anyways? All I want to do is close the form and open another
View 5 RepliesI need to be able to change a path inside a document ( a config file to a program) to the current directory of the application im creating in VB so the text file looks something like
Quote:
something=234
blabla=io

i need to change c:server
I'm using Visual Basic express 2008.The application I am working on is the first major project I have ever undertook with visual basics. The application is a launcher for a private server for world of warcraft.I have a menu bar that pulls the file path of the wow.exe and puts it in a hidden textbox, I then have another option that saves this text to c:wowexe.txt. All of this works GREAT!
How can I read the .txt file to end and return the information stored in the .txt file to this line of code.
Dim RetVal
RetVal = Shell("This is where I need the data from the .txt file to be seen", 1)
If your wondering why I don't just type in the path of the .exe, it's simple, not everyone installs World of Warcraft on the C drive.
Language: vb.net
File size: 1GB, and stuff.
Encoding of the text file: UTF8 (so each character is represented by different numbers of bytes).
Collation: UnicodeCI (when several characters are essentially the same, the most popular version will be the one unique.). I think I know how to handle t his one.
Because each character is represented by different numbers of bytes and each line has different numbers of characters, the number of bytes in each line also vary.
I suppose we have to compute hash for each line. We also need to store buffers location where the line each. Then we have to compare buffers. Then we will check whether the same line shows up or not.
Years ago when coding with VB6 and earlier, I used a file open command to create, read, and write a file that made it easy to store useful information.I believe it was binary and you wrote/read the data to a specific line in the file. When you opened the file with something like notepad, it just showed random ascii chars. When I needed a line of data, I could specify what line to load it from.
View 2 RepliesI've gone through about 16 hours and two packs of cigarettes trying to figure this out. First a little background. I was using 6.0 up until 2004 when I went to prison. I'm out now, and trying to relearn the trade, using VS 2005. I'm currently porting some 6.0 code from another project, SpyCast Webcam Studio, into VB 8.0. It's disheartening, to say the least. None of the old built-in subs/functions work anymore, so I have to scour the forums to relearn each and every function.The section I'm doing now takes a snapshot from the webcam (Video API --> PictureBox --> Save as Jpeg), then upens the file to upload it to the server via HTTP POST. I've been using this code in SpyCast for years with no trouble, but I spent many hours trying to piece together the right code to open the binary file to read its contents. I pieced together two methods I found around the forums, one using FileStream() though the code I found wasn't for binary files, even though it said it was, so that code doesn't really work. Method two uses Microsoft.VisualBasic.FileOpen() and works better.
Here's the kicker. By the time I run through the rest of the rigamarole of uploading the file, by the time I read it on the webserver, it's *slightly* corrupted. It's a valid Jpeg, no errors, but the picture looks like when I use to watch the Playboy Channel when I was a kid scrambled with weird colors and whatnot. [code] Each "chunk" is basically one "line" of the file. It looks like a single LineInput() return is the text between two carriage returns. Am I correct? I tested this with a flat text file, and it looks true. However, That one input line returns the text or data with the carriage returns *stripped*! ***?!? =( Fine, I have no problem adding my own vbCrLf to each LineInput(), if I were opening text. but this's binary. A character could be Chr(10) or Chr(13), both of which are removed from the original file contents.So I could very well need to use something other than LineInput(), but I haven't found any other examples on the web using this method.
I need a code for the open file dialog that if a file is not supported then a message box appears stating the error. This is my open file dialog code. [code] The message box pops up like it is suppose to, when you click ok the open file comes back up like it is suppose to. When you put in the correct file the message box comes back up again. Also the message pops up even if the correct file is put in the open file. but if you close the file dialog the image is where it is suppose to be.I believe the code for the public sub wrongfile is what is the problem. can some one look it over and let me know what changes are needed.

What i am trying to do is open a save file dialog and write to a .txt firl the contents of my listview. so far:
[Code]...
i have this, but i'm not to sure how to write to the .txt file i know i need to use a for each to loop the contents of the list view
It is saved on my desktop for easy access.I can close the program. I can click the solution to open it right back up, no problems.I then zip my file (also to the desktop)
My problem: I moved the original file (Project A) to another folder and extracted the unzipped Project A onto the desktop. When I open the new Project A's solution file, nothing happens besides VB starting up. It doesn't show me anything.
I get mixed results in Google, so I'm wondering how can I simply launch a ReadMe.txt file in Notepad thats in the same directory as my application?
View 1 RepliesI need to open an excel file from vb.net and then search it for specific data. I then need to take those data and insert them into text boxes on a form that i have created. This is all controlled by a button click. I already have some code that will open a file dialog box and let me navigate to the correct file, but I am having trouble with the search portion. I have tried the Find function but I am not sure of the proper syntax. I am using Visual Studio 2008 and Excel 2003.
