Override Basic Types Like Integer, String?

Nov 12, 2010

I am extending some of the basic data types in vb.net for a large application. This includes integer, string, short, etc. As it stands, my new data type objects have names like MYInteger and MYString. Since these are the only types I'm using for my application and they are mostly compatible with the default types, is there a way I can override the defaults with mine so when you Dim iThing as Integer you're actually using my slightly customized integer type?

ViewData("Staff") = From t In db.Staffs Where t.ClassID = mclassID Select t

I've tried quite a few things but to no avail. I've attempted casting, converting, Is operand, etc.

Use A Generic That Only Accepts Integer Types?

Mar 5, 2010

Is there a way to use a generic that only accepts integer types?

I have a Clamp(value, min, max) function, and it would be nice if it could accept ints, uints, floats, shorts, ect without having to write an individual function for each type.

Asp.net - LINQ - Putting Result In A Dictionary(Of String, Integer), Where The Integer Must Be 0?

Sep 19, 2011

I have a LINQ2Entity problem, I want to get the value, string, from a database, so I select FProducts.Serial_number, and to end the query, I do .ToDictionary. The problem is, it tells me that it doesn't have sufficient parameters, to convert ToDictionary. So I need something like select FProducts.Serial_number, Nothing). ToDictionary. Also FProducts.Serial_number, 0).ToDictionary doesn't work.

Sub GetStatistics(ByVal ProductNumbers As List(Of String), ByRef Passed As Integer, ByRef FailedProducts As List(Of String))
Passed = 0
FailedProducts = Nothing

XML - Determine Basic Types Of Elements And Attributes From Schema

Feb 17, 2011

I have given the local name of an element or attribute and the schema for the document. What is the easiest way to determine the basic datatype of the element or attribute. By basic datatype I mean the xs:string, xs:date etc. (The built in data types for the xml schema.) One of the problems I face is that it is rare for the elements type to be one of the basic built in types. 99% of the time it is a complex type that 50% of the time refers to another complex type that refers to another complex type and so on.

A simple Example for this schema: I want to find the basic type for Employee/Person/Name/LastName (determine that LastName is xs:normalizedString).
In the schema Employee is defined as an xs:element and type="bns:EmployeeType"

EmplyeeType has a Person element defined but it is type "PersonType" and then Name in person is NameType which is a complex type that extends GeneralName type that is type BasicNameType and that type finally defines the LastName which is of type "LastNameType" and on and on. There also definitions etc. I am currently writing a parser using linq-to-xml to get at this but it isn't easy or pretty. I have searched for other solutions and haven't found any but I fully admit my XML/schema/XPath ignorance. Is there an easy way to get the basic type for elements?

Basic Array Construction - One Column Or Entry Would Be A Single Integer

Oct 27, 2009

How you might construct an array like the following: one column or entry would be a single integer, like 0, 1, 2, 3, 4... - i need this as an index of each one's position in the list the second would be 0 or 1, or true or false the third would itself be a list of integers 0,4,5,2,7,2,5,2...

So all together one entry would be {0; 0; 0,4,5,2,7,2,5,2} while the next might be {1; 0; 6,8,2,5,2,3}

I'm having a terrible time wrapping my head around this. It's mostly the third column which is actually a list in itself, that is giving me trouble

Copying Reference Types And String

Mar 2, 2010

I understand that an array variable contains a reference to an array object - it is a reference type. string variable is also a reference type. So, if I make a copy of either one, a change to the copy should also change the result I get when I look at the original because both refer to the same object. In the following code, I expected to see "Whoooy" as the result for original and copy for both the array and the string. It works with the array but not the string.

Checking An Object's Parent Types By String?

Apr 15, 2011

I'm trying to figure out how find an object's type when it is a subclass of another object and I only know the string value of the object's type's name.I created the follwing classes:

Public Class word
End Class
Public Class noun[code]....

The problem is, using 'GetType' to check pn against a string value, I can only see that pn is a properNoun, not that its parent classes are noun and word.Is there a way to check pn against the string value "noun" or "word" and get back a positive result, indicating that pn is indeed a noun and a word as well as a properNoun?

Way Of Getting A Data Table With Various Column Types Into String Array?

This should be an easy one, looks like I got myself too confused.I get a table from a database, data ranges from varchar to int to Null values. Cheap and dirty way of converting this into a tab-delimited file that I already have is this (shrunken to preserve space, ugliness is kept on par with original):
