Prevent An ASP.Net Webapp From Clearing Out Page Variables On VB Side?
Jun 17, 2010
I have a webapp in ASP.Net with a VB codebehind. I need a List variable I have declared to persist as long as the person is on the page, but currently any time a control posts back to the code, everything is cleared out. Can it be done with a Session variable? Those seem to me to be limited to base types, but I could be wrong.

I have been struggling with getting FormViews to work the way Microsoft expects me to for about a day and have figure a bunch of great stuff out.
I can catch e.Exception and e.ReturnValue in the ObjectDataSource.Inserting Event Handler and I can even cheat and check other properties of the Object in the ObjectDataSource.ObjectDisposing by checking the e.ObjectInstance ... and I even learned that FormView's Inserting Handler Runs AFTER the ObjectDisposing Handler so If there is a problem found I still have time to react to it and st the e.KeepInInsertMode to true on the FormView.
My problem is, it seems that the values entered by the user into the Insert form are cleared regardless.
So, How do I Prevent a FormView from clearing after it's Insert Method has fired?
(Using ASP.NET + VB)
I don't think posting my code here will really do much good and i would have to modify it to trim out confidential business logic stuff... so I'll skip it for now.
edit:
I have found a temporary and admittedly terribly cludgy solution (in case no one ever finds a REAL solution to the problem).
I have a page variable defined as:
Dim eInsertArgs As FormViewInsertedEventArgs
And then I do the following in my ItemInserted handler
If boolInsertErrorOccurred = False Then
e.KeepInInsertMode = True
eInsertArgs = e
[Code].....
The effect of this is that I am setting the values BACK to the submitted values AFTER ASP.NET binds the FormView to the default (blank) Template.

I was having problems inserting a string into the following tag : <tr id="rowBulkOptions" style='<%# sBulkOptionsRowStyle %>'> Don't ask why I'm using tables sBulkOptionsRowStyle is a Public string in the aspx.vb file. Seemingly the only way I can get this to render is to put Page.DataBind() in the Page_Load, Page_PreRender etc.. However this causes me problems because Page.DataBind() binds all controls on the page. I could use <%= BUT another part of the code inserts controls into the page and apparently you can't use <%= and insert controls.Is there a way I can just say 'look, put sBulkOptionsRowStyle into the page

I have a form that uses the printer object and the print preview. A user clicks on a Print button, the preview comes up. This works fine the first time they do so, but if they click on this button more times, the output is overlaid ontop of the first report. The printer object is destroyed at the end of the print creation, and I have tried various other means to make sure that the page gets cleared without success.[code]

i am new at everything VB.net/ASP.net. I have an ASCX.vb page that lets the user choose someone from a table. Once they do select someone, the page reloads with that persons information into another table below that one where they can submit an order for that person or remove that person. Problem being is that i wanted to store the users ID that are selected but it seems that everytime the page reloads to show an update, it dim's my array again back to default. This is my code once they choose a user:

I found some code on the internet as below (slightly modified).It simply requests the content of a webpage.However I get two warnings:
Warning 1 Variable 'srRead' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime.
Warning 2 Variable 'Str' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime.
I know I can simply forget about the Finally and add the code to the try block.Will that be the way to go or can I prevent the warnings using a different approach?

Is it possible for a class of exposing a type for function returns, without allowing users of that class to create variables of that type? A couple usage scenarios:A Fluent interface on a large class; a statement like "foo=bar.WithX(5).WithY(9).WithZ(19);" would be inefficient if it had to create three new instances of the class, but could be much more efficient if the WithX could create one instance, and the other statements could simply use it.A class may wish to support a statement like "foo[19].x = 9;" even when foo itself isn't an array, and does not hold the data in class instances that can be exposed to the public; one way to do that is to have foo[19] return a struct which holds a reference to 'foo' and the value '19', and has a member property 'x' which could call "foo.SetXValue(19, 9);" Such a struct could have a conversion operator to convert itself to the "apparent" type of foo[19].In both of these scenarios, storing the value returned by a method or property into a variable and then using it more than once would cause strange behavior. It would be desirable if the designer of the class exposing such methods or properties could ensure that callers wouldn't be able to use them more than once. Is there any practical way to accomplish that?In formulating a question, it's difficult sometimes to draw the line between complicated usage cases, and simpler usage cases which aren't quite so important. Here's another usage case, and one closer to the one I'd be most interested in (though I'm also interested in Fluent chaining; being able to have something behave like a C++ reference to a value type would be nice, but probably too much work to bother with).I have a type which is somewhat like the Windows registry, in that it is a hierarchical collection of items, each of which may have a string value, an integer value, and/or a nested collection of items. I wish to be able to support the following types of usage:[code]As for the Fluent interface, my thought would be to have the WithXXX properties return a new instance of a derived class which shadows (not overrides!) the WithXXX properties with versions that simply modify the current instance. The return object from WithXXX would be known to be of the derived class, and would thus use the shadowed WithXXX methods, but once it was assigned to a variable, it would be regarded as an instance of the base class, so the next WithXXX would create a new instance.
C++ a stronger concept of value types than C# or vb.net, including the very useful concept of references to value types; it ensures that references to value types cannot be persisted outside the scope of the type in question. Unsafe code in C# can use pointers to value types, but they don't have the protections offered by C++ references.

I have a web application that allows a user to view family members.
When the user clicks on a family member, it displays the member's basic info. There is also a grid displaying that family member's related family members. (e.g. User can click on the Father link. From that popup, they can then click on the Father's Father link, then click on the Father's Father's Grandson link, etc.).
To reduce the number of popups that appear on the screen, I want to prevent the user from continually clicking on family links past three members.
What is the best way to keep track on how many data forms have popped up? Or can this reliably be done with a web application?

divide the page using Iframes and loads the tree in one frame and loads the page in second divide the page using div and bind the data in a repeater or grid to display data.I like to know about the performance- oriented or standard method to achieve the task. Also suggest me any other method for this task.

The problem im having is that I have a table that when a user click on a button it adds a row to the table via javascript, which works fine. The problem is that if a user need to update other data the user click another button which refreshes the page and all rows the user created in the table are deleted. My question is what can I do to make the rows not to be deleted once the page is refreshed? I know some might think, just not refresh the page, but there is to much data that has to be displayed and a new query has to be generated to grab the data.

I am working with adding up user's scores based on their checks in a CheckBoxList. Every time a user checks a box, a value, X, is added to the overall score. When a user unchecks a box, a value, X, is subtracted from the overall score. No problems here.
The problem that I am having is that using the AutoPostback option in the CheckBoxList properties forces the page to load back to the top instead of staying where the user was situated, which means that they have to keep scrolling down after each check/uncheck. Is there a way to prevent this?

prevent a button serverClick event from firing on page refresh?
Markup:
<INPUT id="btnGo" type="button" value="Go" runat="server">
VB.net:
Public Sub btnGo_ServerClick(ByVal sender As Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnGo.ServerClick
The btnGo_ServerClick function needs to fire on the button click, but not on page refresh.I've tried using IsPostback, but that is always true- even on the button click.N.B. I'd rather not go into the reasons behind why I'm using a serverclick, rather than an asp:button and a click event. Suffice to say it just isn't suitable for I am doing.

I've written a JavaScript function which validates form input and highlights the input fields and displays any error messages, which I have tested and all works fine. i have called this function from the OnClientClick attribute of an asp:Button tag. However, if the JavaScript function determines there to be validation errors, I want to stop the form from submitting. How do I do this?

I'm enabling an windows identity foundation on an existing webapp. I want to mess as little as possile with the existing code so I would like to the login page which uses formsauthentication left in the application and I just connect with the STS if the user enters the application via a specific page e.g "im_comming_from_some_other_site.aspx".
[Code]...
(Of course some code would be needed when to determine what to do when the authentication is timed out; either go to local login page or goto STS-login page)I know this may seem like a bad design, not going all the way with STS, but I need to implement this ASAP and I want to keep the original site as untouched as possible.

I'm planning to use some session variables on an intranet ASP/VB.NET page, and want to make sure that I'm not missing out on anything important I should know, or that I have my information mixed up. So here's what I (think) I know about session variables.They:are stored on the server, so if I have a lot of users then they'll each be using some more memory which could lead to a slowdown.are inaccessible by the user unless I expose access. hang around/persist across user requests (i.e. each time the user makes a request from the page the data will still be there - until it times out). This also means that I need to make sure that the variable doens't have "left over" data in it.
Is there anything that I've got totally wrong, or anything I'm missing? I'd prefer not to get bitten by a bug down the road because I think I understand what's going on.

I know this defeats the purpose of client side vs. server side (refer to title of this thread). What I would love to do is build my own custom progress indicator on the client showing how far a server side code has progressed. I figure if I could only get a JavaScript to fire and render a value of some control at pre-defined intervals while the server is working I could make it happen - but alas I'm beginning to believe that this is impossible. Below is some code that performs three 2 sec loops. At the end of each I want to change the visible value of a control on the browser. [Code]

Using the following script:
$("#some_button").click(function() {
var changed = [];
[CODE]...
I need to send back the id, the old value from _1 and the new value from _0 back to the server. What is the best way to format this data so I can easily extract the data from the server side so I can easily email someone for example to let them know which textboxes have changed, what the old values were, and what the new values are
At the serverside level, I am using .NET-3.5 (VB). I know how to send the data bacl. and how to email the data, I just wanted to know how to best format the data at clientside before sending it back. I could have upto 50 sets of id, old, and new values to send back. Sorry for not making that clear earlier.
Example:
How can I modify the script above to generate this?

"new": "text",

So I've got a website thats been published to a web server using Visual Studio, compiled and all. And now i'd like to edit this website. I understand Visual Studio does some compiling and building include files before it is website ready. Is there any way to accomplish this outside of Visual Studio? I have long since given up my Windows setup with Visual Studio and now I really need to edit some of this code. Editing the source seems like no problem, but there are certain other things I'm having trouble with without Visual Studio (adding new public parent classes, for example). What are my options?

Using javascript, is there anyway I can add a bottom scroll bar to these grids? Doesn't seem like we have a wrapped command to do it...

I currently have a parent Listview and its child Listview displaying in the centre column of an HTML page that consists of three columns left, centre and right. And all looks very good. However I would like to display the child list view in the right column beside the parent list view.
To do this it seems I must somehow generate from the code behind page a new row in the table every time the parent Listview displays a record of its data and then some column HTML so the first child list view will appear in the right hand column.
