Preventing JIT Debugger From Popping Up
Nov 15, 2011
I have a program, I have published it, and I have been actually using it in my PC. Whenever it encounters an error, the JIT debugger comes out. How do I prevent it from popping up using try...catch blocks, or is there any other ways or code on how to do this?

I have a VB .NET 2003 application that runs on the console. When the application runs, the console window pops up which isn't always necessary. Does anyone know of a way to prevent that console window from popping up, but still continue to run? I was thinking of something along these lines:

I'm working on a client using instant messages. I don't want the same user popping up multiple forms (IM's).Need 1 user in it's own form, and a new user to popup a seperate form.
Public Function createIMWindow(ByVal strUser As String, ByVal strMsg As String)
If frm_IM.txtWho.Text = strUser Then
Dim myFont As New Font("Arial", 10, FontStyle.Regular, GraphicsUnit.Point)
frm_IM.Text = strUser & " - Instant Message"
frm_IM.RichTextBox1.SelectionStart = Len(frm_IM.RichTextBox1.Text)

When I call the save dialog object to prompt the user for a new file name, sometimes it does not appear as the active window, it is occasionally popping under all the open windows, and you have to minimize all of them back to the desktop to find it. What sort of problem would cause this, and is there a way to force it to the front?

I have a simple program that runs in the background and when the user presses a certain key will take a printscreen and pop up a save file dialog to save an image. But sometimes the save dialog is not appearing because it loads buried under other pre-existing windows, which have to be minimized in order to find it. Is there any way to force this dialog to be on top?

I have tried to simplify and annotate the code which is giving me a headache below. It demonstrates my problem. Simply put, I have two separate stacks and I am trying to pop from one stack. For some reason, when you pop one of the stacks, it actually seems to pop the other one as well?! Is this by design and if so, why and how should I work around it?
Public Class Form1
Public _stackMaster As New Stack
Public _stackCopy As New Stack
Public _strPopped As String
[code].....

When a custom class overrides the ToString() method, the C# IDE uses this function to display the class in the debug mode(tooltips, watcher etc) Does the VB.NET the same? I have impression that overriding ToString() method does change nothing. I mean, in the watcher I see Name myBusinessObjectInsnace Value {MyNamespace.myBusinessObjectInsnaceType}

where the VS debugger refuses to show certain field types including dates.My call stack contains FunctionA which calls FunctionB. FunctionB has about 45 parameters and many of them are dates.When I step into functionA,
1. the debugger refuses to show a date variable when you hold the mouse over it. It just shows {Date} instead of a value
2. If you do quick watch on that same variable, it also just shows {Date} instead of a value
3. If I do ?variablename in the immediate window, I get "System Error &H80131c23&"
When I comment out the call to functionB, the date variables all show correctly in all the above methods. I will stress that the code has not yet reached functionB, just its very existence in code screws up the debugger.I'm thinking this is a memory issue and maybe vs debugger can't cope with a huge function stack frame dataspace.devenv is only using 268Meg of ram on a 2Meg box, with not much else running. Thats reasonable for this size of project.

I've been given an old VB.net 1.1, Visual Studio 2003, project.When debugging DateTime shows as #09:34:00 AM#, the date-part is hidden. I would like to see which date the DateTime is.I've tried to modify mcee_cs.dat, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

We are designing a toolbar to be used in PowerShape that was originally written in VB6. We are beginning the conversion to VB.net and for some reason, when we size the new form that is the actual toolbar, we can see the size change in Design Mode but when we run the debugger it does NOT show the newly sized form. We managed to get the Width to update after clearing the Debug and Release directories but not the Height... And even then it only works once then we have to go back in and clear the directories again in order for the width to update.

Am experiencing a confusing situation where the debugging seems to skip arbitrary sections of code (including breakpoints) and then breaks on non-breakpointed lines. The call stack reports [External Code] even though its not external code

Im developing several applications under Visual Studio, and now have a real nightmare in hands. When i start to debug, VS hangs completely. Windows allows me to start task admin, and close the "devenv" process.I have serious problems here. I need to deliver my projects before the deadline!
Win 7 Pro 32 bits, VS 2010 SP1, running on HP computer based on Intel i5, 4gb ram. everything works as intended, except VS. When debug crashes, the devenv process uses about 25% of CPU and 250~400Mb of ram.

I have a vb.net application that I compiled and all, I took the EXe and all and placed it on another pc that has only visual studio express on it.
When I open my .exe I get a message saying No debugger has been found, no Jit Debugger has been specified I can either select retry to find a debugger or click on cancel to forget about the debugger.
If I press cancel, my application launches correctly without any problem.

Is there a way to prevent the VB .NET editor from saving the project whenever IT LIKES TO ? It very annoying ; it so stupid that it saves things that I don't want to and that I didn't ask it to do .If I add a form and then close the editor , when I open the project again , that form is still there though I DIDN'T save it !If I change a declaration from Friend to Public and close the editor without saving , then when I open again the project , my modified code remains modified , though I DID NOT save it !Today I realized that if I delete some controls of a form and then close the Editor , then when I reopen it , the controls are missing for good ! It saved that modification by itself !

I've completed an assignment that requires me to search through two listboxes for a particular number.If the number is found, the text on a label changes to a dollar amount, otherwise a message box is displayed letting the user know that the requested number cannot be found.It works well enough, searches through the listboxes, finds the number, and displays the message box when it can't be found.However, the message box shows repeatedly up to five times.After the user clicks "OK" on the fifth appearance, the program crashed and displays the follow message."Invalid Argument = Value of '5' is not valid for 'index'.Parameter name: index."I don't know what's causing this, or how to fix it.I do use the index as a counter at a portion of the program...but I'm not sure where I went wrong with it.[code]Also there are five items in the second listbox...probably has something to do with it.

I am trying to prevent the user from activating a Print command for the content displayed in a WebBrowser. If the user hits Ctr P, the print dialog appears. I would think I have to trap this, but am not sure how to do this. There is no KeyPress event in the browser, and using the keypress event on the Form does not appear to trigger when text is typed into browser.

The original post provoked more responses than I anticipated. Therefore I have tried to draw them together with this post.There appear to be several schools of thought on this issue.One holds that I should not release time-bombed software because it is illegal.
Suppose I include code that often randomly checks if the user is registered and then puts up a message and shuts down the program if a check fails - rather like an improved nag screen. Would this be regarded as illegal?One holds that I should not worry about it because the pirates wouldn't buy my software anyway.
Maybe, but there's no fun in that.One holds that it is a waste of time because it is impossible to protect 100%.Maybe, but once again no fun.My view was that an honest user buying from my site would get a genuine copy. If a dishonest user got a harmful copy and lost the lot then I couldn't care less.Reed Kimble pointed out the existence of "fake sellers" who could cause harm by selling honest users a dishonest copy.This is a problem that I had not thought of and it poses a dilemma.
If I do include protection, then how do I distinguish between and honest user and a dishonest one? They will both be caught by the protection.should I not include any protection at all so that the honest user doesn't lose out, and just accept that the dishonest one gets away with it?Or nail the pirate and accept the honest loser as collateral damage?

What's the best way to prevent javascript injections in a VB.NET Web Application? Is there some way of disabling javascript on the pageload event?Recently, part of the security plan for our vb.net product was to simply disable buttons on the page that weren't available to the specific user. However, I informed the guy who thought of the idea that typing
javascript:alert(document.getElementById("Button1").disabled="")
in the address bar would re-enable the button.
Update:Aside from validating user input, how can I protect the website from being toyed with from the address bar?
