Publishing App In .net And Creating Setup.exe?
Apr 11, 2010
i am publishing an app in vb.net. it's creating setup.exe and a folder called application files. i am told that setup.exe is stand alone and does not need any other files. is this right? because when i put setup.exe in a different directory it says that some files are missing.

I have a running program currently installed in my server, this program is running 24hrs a day. Now I did some enhancements on this program and tried to publish it. My publishing is successful but when I click the setup.exe Im have error message: "Critical error during application's main start up procedure. Description: Required processing files missing." I tried to deploy it also on my server but the same problem so I copied back the original for the program to keep on running. Attached Images error_when_setup.jpg (19.1 KB, 38 views)

The program I am building requires a lot of initial user input. I was wanting to stream line this by creating a 'config' file so to speak that after the user enters all the initial data they can click a button that will save their entries into a secure file. When they leave for the day and come back they can click the load button and it auto fills in all the relevant data that will be stored in the file.
Still digging through the MSDN for help, but no luck on options yet.
I was thinking save the information to a text file somehow, but passwords will be stored and I would like to make it secure if possible.

I am creating a VB windows form applications , the working can be summarized as users fills some form and data is saved in sql server database. Now the problem i am facing is that i have to deliver this as a setup file to someone, and that person will further distribute it to different users to run on their PC, what i am thinking is that the code once installed on other computers and executed will give errors because of the connection string of sql server db as it will not match with that computer . I know that if a distribute projects i can put connection string in app.config and every user can change it according to his/her machine .But as i am giving a setup file how to solve this problem

I am creating a desktop application in vb.net by using visual studio 2008 and using ms sql 2008 as back end for my database. As I am creating application on my own system I know my connection string and I have created database manually on my system.
What I want is, when user install application on its system, the database created dynamically at that time on his system and he must enter server name, username and password for ms sql server that application should store for future use.If not at installation, it should atleast check and create database, everytime the user open the application.

I am creating a visual basic project for class. It is all running as intended though I am not sure how to set up the login to database function. When you click the link for the specific report it should display the page. But I get a login to database page. I am just wondering how I set that up so that one can actually see the information. ie:

Is it possible to create a custom start menu shortcut link?
The only possibilities I see in the setup project are shortcuts to folders or primary output.
Update:
What I ended up doing is creating a custom action on commit that dynamically creates the link using Windows Scripting Host. Then on uninstall, removing the link.

I am using VS 2008 VB and setup my application software in Win XP without any issue. But after installed in Win 7, it doesn't work well (it show one file not found, but I saw the file in the right folder). Could it be the incompatibility of VS 2008 and Win 7? If I upgrade to VS 2010, will the issue be fixed?

I'm a Visual Basic beginner. There are many things that I didn't know about Windows software development as I've been a Mac user for 20 years and just started developing Windows programs several days ago.
Anyway, using Visual Studio Installer (File > Add > New Project > Visual Studio Installer), I have two files inside the Release folder - setup.exe and Setup.msi. I've got some information about these files. So when you publish your software, what do you do with these two files? According to one web site, you can put them together into one with IExpress, which produces a file with an extension of CAB. Another web site suggests SFX Compiler. In the meantime, I downloaded a dozen applications at Download.com earlier. If I click on the download button, the final delivery extension is .exe on most of them. I know that you won't go anywhere by double-clicking on setup.exe from the Release folder without Setup.msi. Meanwhile, Setup.msi is a tand-alone application. But nobody uses this file alone to distribute their product.

I've finally got a project compiled and tested and ready to roll out.I have discovered that the "Publish" option is not what it seems, and that we must create a separate "Setup Project" to carry out the task of installing the files. This is not the most intuitive process I've seen, and the online help on that subject is not easy to understand.I was hoping that someone could direct me to a tutorial or guide that would step me through the specific approach I need. Many of the other guides online are vague and address multiple scenarios and do not separate the approaches very well.I have the contents of my project in /bin/release. It runs nicely by iteself with no errors. Here's what I need:
1. To create a setup exe that I can distribute that will install my software, with all of the supporting (resource) files and folders.
2. I need the setup process to force the installer to "agree" to a EULA.
3. I'd would like to provide an image on the installation screen/popup.
4. I would like the software registered in the registry and rely on it being there in the registry.
5. I need it to default to program filesprojectname (it does by default)

Setup and deploy for my project worked fine for a while allowing you to install my program and uninstall the old version, but now it installs two entries. I don't get it, before I got it do do that it would give an error that it needed to be uninstalled first. Now like I said I get two entries in the programs uninstall window. RemovePreviousVersions = true. I change the version number and update the product code. Even tried changing the upgrade code. I just don't get why it doesn't work anymore, and its really annoying! Also, is there a way that the setup file can just be one .exe rather then a setup file and a data file?

I had a working WCF published to IIS on my server. Recently I created another, self-hosting WCF (windows service) and added a reference to it from my WCF on IIS. Like this:
ASP --> WCF (in IIS) --> WCF (as win service)
Now, I can't seem to add a reference to my first WCF in my ASP app. So I've got this:
ASP XXX WCF (in IIS) --> WCF (as win service)
Here's the service model from the WCF in IIS. I'm publishing to http://localhost/LetterWriterASP/

In my current program, I'm calling some EXEs by just clicking on a button (so basically an all-in-one tool). (I'm using VS 2010)Question is: when I publish my project, you get of course a setup which you have to install. I'd rather have it be an EXE you can just launch.
