Install .rtf Files In Folders When Building/publishing/installing Program?

Oct 18, 2010

I could not figure out the key to installing folders/subfolders/.rtf files during deployment/installation. The key here is to 'add' folders and subfolders to the project in solution explorer, then adding existing item (.text (.rtf files in my case) files) then selecting the .rtf file in solution explorer.go to its properties and under 'Build Action' select 'Content' (very Important!). Then under 'Copy to Output' select 'Copy if newer'!Then in code to access these files you use the following code:

Me.RichTextBoxDisplay.LoadFile(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath, "KJV BibleOTExodusExodus KJV.rtf"))

Finally after 3 days of research and 2 days at the msdn forum picking peoples minds (smarter than mine) and lots of prayer, I got it!

File I/O And Registry :: Publishing Access File And Then Referencing After Install?

Apr 28, 2010

i have a problem where i've hard coded the file path of an access database i'm using with a VB.net program. this means that if i publish the program the database doesn't publish with it and i have to "ship" the program with the the database file separately and create another form so the user can say where the file is held. i don't want to do this.is there any way to get the access database file to publish with the program and then access that file path by code? for example the database file is held in the same folder as the installed program and then is accessed by code so there is no need to use a specific file path.

I know that if I click publish in either edition, I get the Click once publishing format. But, I also know that you can specify directory to publish your program to exc:Program Filesprogram namemy executable.exe). But I am unsure how to properly set this up in the VS8 Studio. The only part I have not found, is how to Publish your program and not use the Click once format.

Publishing VB2008 Express Program?

Mar 24, 2012

Published VB program will not run on another computer yet works fine on the computer the program was written on. Message window during set-up on the other computer reads "Cannot download the application. The application is missing required files." The set-up file is being run from a flash drive. The entire error summary is included below. A recurring line in the error message summary is "+Downloading file:///C:/Documents and Settings/username/Desktop/Application Files/filename_1_0_0_6/filename.exe.manifest did not succeed."The word "filename" is the name of my program. "username" is the computer's owner.Interestingly, the "manifest" file on my computer is kept in C:UsersusernameDesktopApplication Filesfilename_1_0_0_6filename.exe.manifest" I'm running Windows7; the other computer is running Windows XP.How do I get my program to run on another computer?

Deployment :: Publishing An .exe File

I've just completed my first VB.Net program and I want to publish it as a stand-alone program. When I use the "Publish" function from the Project menu, it creates an installation program that is required to complete before I can use the program freely. Is it possible to just make a program that will run without needing to "install" it?

Appending A Text File In Publishing?

Sep 14, 2011

I have a VB 2008 program which shows the user's results in a ListView, and permanently stores them in a Notepad (.txt) file. The program works fine when I run it using Debug. The permanent records show up on a .txt file in the "bin". However, I want to publish the program as an executable file. I have tried this using my normal method of selecting "Publish" from the "Build" menu, and my program runs fine but there is no .txt file to be found.

VS 2008 Publishing A Project

Dec 21, 2009

i went up to "Build > Build Project" then "Build > Publish Project." So I went to the director i published my project in, and I ran Setup.exe, I followed as prompt, and then when the Splash screen unloaded, the project stopped responding and closed. So I ran the debug on VB8 and it ran fine passed the splash screen. Then, I tried going to the debug folder, and run the project from there, it ran fine to. So I tried another solution. I copied, and pasted the .exe file in the debug folder to my desktop, along with the .dll files in the debug folder to, ran it, and it got an error instantly after running it.So the only way I could get it to run, is to leave the .exe in the Debug folder, and to run Debugging in VB8.Also, I really don't like the way VB8 publishes the files and you have to run the setup each time you want to run the program. Is there a way to just make it a normal .exe file, like the ones vb6 makes?

ClickOnce Publishing With VB 2008 Express?

May 24, 2009

Publishing to CD using the ClickOnce method IS possible in VB 2008 Express. I've posed many questions in the past in my questions regarding "Distributing A Program on CD".I was getting error messages and my program would not instal on a 3rd party computer (My LapTop)

I followed all the instruction as laid out in the Help file and took note of all the advice I received in the forum but the programs wouldn't install on my LapTop.I bought a book entitled "Build A Program Now Microsoft VisualBasic 2008 Express Edition" by Patrice Pelland.

In Chapter nine in goes through the procedure of publishing with the ClickOnce method. The one thing that the book said which was not included in the Help file was that the option "Build (Program)" in the Build menu had to be selected.I then went through all the other options as were discussed in my threads "Distributing a Program on CD".

Success! I published two programs, "MasterMind" and "HangMan" (Simple enough programs for a beginner to VB Express)I then burnt the two folders created during the publish porcedure to a CD, loaded the CD onto my LapTop and double clicked on "Setup" on the "Mastermind" program. Total success! The program installed without a hitch and runs without fault.

I then selcted to instal "HangMan" and bombed out with the error message that stated I need to instal
"Microsoft.Visual Basic.PowerPacks.Vs" in the Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first."

VS 2008 Publishing A Project With ClickOnce?

Aug 30, 2010

I have a project and I'm publishing it with ClickOnce. As it publishes, it asks: "Version 1.00.xxx (etc) already exists on the server, do you want to overwrite it?" -- well, I click yes, and then I run the setup file and install it (I publish to my desktop), and guess what -- it's the old version of the project. For some reason, unless the version that is published is greater than the prior version, even if I tell it to overwrite that version, it is not published properly!

This has caused me some headaches, as I test my program on another VM, find errors, fix them in code, republish, and find the same bugs in my program as I test it again because it didn't publish the latest or newest version of my program, I even tried the simplest thing, I changed the text on my main form window that opens to something different from previous, and no matter how many times I publish, and click overwrite the old version, the old version remains!

VS 2008 Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard - MSI Returned Error Code 1638

Jan 3, 2012

At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message: "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.

When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it
cannot install something because it is already installed: "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".

In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.3
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4

Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"?

I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008.

I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.

.net - Publishing WCF App?

May 12, 2011

I had a working WCF published to IIS on my server. Recently I created another, self-hosting WCF (windows service) and added a reference to it from my WCF on IIS. Like this:

ASP --> WCF (in IIS) --> WCF (as win service)

Now, I can't seem to add a reference to my first WCF in my ASP app. So I've got this:

ASP XXX WCF (in IIS) --> WCF (as win service)

Here's the service model from the WCF in IIS. I'm publishing to http://localhost/LetterWriterASP/

A Boolean Value Does Not Persist After Publishing

May 1, 2009

I'm working with Visual Basic 2008 Express. My application opens with the Terms screen, a form that asks the user to declare his acceptance of certain terms and conditions or to decline. If he accepts, the app opens the main screen, giving him access to all the app's facilities. If he declines, the app gives him a message and then closes. Whether he chooses to accept or decline, the app puts his decision in My.Settings so that it can be used next time the app is opened. In this way he is presented with the Terms screen on the next opening if he declined on the last run. But if he accepted on the last run, he is presented with the main screen on his next opening.

All works fine when I do a debug run. But when I build and publish the app onto my desktop it opens with the Main screen instead of the Terms screen.

why it works on F5 but not after publishing?
