Install .rtf Files In Folders When Building/publishing/installing Program?
Oct 18, 2010
I could not figure out the key to installing folders/subfolders/.rtf files during deployment/installation. The key here is to 'add' folders and subfolders to the project in solution explorer, then adding existing item (.text (.rtf files in my case) files) then selecting the .rtf file in solution explorer.go to its properties and under 'Build Action' select 'Content' (very Important!). Then under 'Copy to Output' select 'Copy if newer'!Then in code to access these files you use the following code:
Me.RichTextBoxDisplay.LoadFile(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath, "KJV BibleOTExodusExodus KJV.rtf"))
Finally after 3 days of research and 2 days at the msdn forum picking peoples minds (smarter than mine) and lots of prayer, I got it!

I need help with file enumeration. I'm trying to create a program that can list files, folders and sub folders locations in a log file for diagnostic purposes. After it searches it can open notepad and display the results. The problem I'm having is that I'm a beginner and not familiar with file enumeration.

I would like to install a readme.txt file in the same All Programs folder as my application using ClickOnce deployment. The Build Action property is set to "Content" and the Copy to Output Directory is set to "Copy always" for this file. In the Application Files dialog box, Publish Status=Include for the file. After running setup.exe, the app is installed properly in the Start/All Programs/MBCI folder, but the readme.txt file is not there. Is the file installed somewhere else?

When I run my compiled project, it creates a start menu folder and desktop icon. But there's nothing in the Program Files of my OS. Is it because my project is still small- or something else? Shouldn't it create a folder in the Program Files?Speaking of creating a folder- I need to create a folder on my C drive when the program is installed, and inside the folder an Excel spreadsheet needs to be deposited (C:DailyLogsDailyLog.xlsx).

I am creating a form with the resources which I am creating a programming with languages. I have created three resources which the one that are ZH-CH (Chinese), el-GR (Greece) and en-US (English-United States). I have also built some texts in the resources so I have debugged the program. Everything seen to be is fine, but I find that some weird stuff in the project bin folder. I found that the program has created three folders (ZH-CH, el-GR and en-US) with the dll file in each folder (Project1.resources.dll), I have renamed each dll files name with each different name and I have moved them in the bin folder, so I have deleted three folders. I ran the program again and they have created the new same folders with the same name where it was.
I want to use the same dll files that I have renamed (like each of these: English.dll, Greek.dll and Chinese.dll) without placing them in the resources folder. Id find it so impossible to avoid the program by creating these new folders with the same dll files name without using the files that I have renamed them and placed in the project bin folder. do to find out where the information in VB.Net application that are making the program to create the folders with the same dll files name (project1.resources.dll)?

I am a new Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition and just finished and distributed my first program. However, one of my users (Using Windows Vista 64-bit) cannot install my program. He gets the following error An error occurred while installing system components for <PROGRAM NAME> Setup cannot continue untill all system components have been successfully installed. Component .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has failed to install with the following error message: "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install." Other 64-bit users on both Windows 7 and Vista don't have this problem.

I'm working on a MySQL database with a VB.NET front end, and I'd like the installer to first install MySQL and Connector/.NET (if they aren't already installed) and then run a query to load the dump file that I'm including among the program resources. Is this possible, or will I have to instruct my users how to install MySQL and Connector/.NET themselves beforehand?

My program has 1,000 + .rtf files and when I publish/Install it's HUGE! 200mb +. I have other apps from other software companies that have more documents than mine, and their entire application is around 50mb. What am I missing here? How do I accomplish the same thing? Does it have to do with the Property Settings of the .rtf files called: "Build Action" and "Copy to Output Directory"? I set my "Build Action" to "Content" for all my .rtf files, and set "Copy to Output Directory" to "Copy Always".

Have built a project and associated it with a Setup&Deployment Project. The S&D project needs to contain 2 main folders (under User's Desktop) with various formats of files (xmls, txts, dlls) inside them and several subfolders. How can i copy/import these 2 folders and there sub-files/folders into my s&d project?
When adding them in the usual way, they are copied and defined a source path onto the current pc. You can understand what errors this might create when an another targeted pc does not contain those files to the exact location. Is there any way to copy them locally or somehow import them?

i have a problem where i've hard coded the file path of an access database i'm using with a VB.net program. this means that if i publish the program the database doesn't publish with it and i have to "ship" the program with the the database file separately and create another form so the user can say where the file is held. i don't want to do this.is there any way to get the access database file to publish with the program and then access that file path by code? for example the database file is held in the same folder as the installed program and then is accessed by code so there is no need to use a specific file path.

I'm currently working on an application that allows users to select picture files and then categorize them into folders. Now I'm having two issues that are probably simple to fix but I only have a year of experience with vb so I just don't know how to fix them. The first and biggest issue is that once the user has selected and categorized a file, I want the program to select the next file in the folder that the first file was moved from. This way the number of clicks required is minimized. However I have no clue what I would need to do in order to accomplish this. Also, my other problem is that I want to be able to find the indexof a quotation mark but whenever I put it in the parameter it just reads it as a quote.

In my code I've allowed used to create their own mazes and save them, under whatever name they like. I've also included a few pre-created mazes. The mazes themselves are saves in .txt files in the bin/debug folder of the project, along with a .txt file containing the maze names.
I really need to publish this program to send it to my teacher, but when I publish it it doesn't include any of the .txt files in my bin/debug folder.

When a project is built in VB, the executable file is created in the \bin\Release folder. Apart from the executable there are other files that get created:
MyProject.application
MyProject.exe.manifest
MyProject.pdb
MyProject.xml
Are these files required to run the executable? Is having just the MyProject.exe file in the setup enough? And what are these files for?

I have written a simple app that allows our clients to access documents they might need throughout their time of doing business with us. They access these document via a button click event. First off I'd like to publish this program and install it onto a CD so that the end user does not have to install anything on their machine. They just simply pop the CD in and the program runs and they can click on whatever document they need. I'm having to trouble figuring out how to install it on a CD. I am also pretty sure i've done my mouse click events incorrectly because i have the exact path to the documents in my resources file.
i'm currently using the "System.dianogistics...process"(i'm not sure if thats the exact syntax and i forgot a couple of the words) function(i'm not sure if this is a function or not. i'm not super familar with VB). but when i use this method it requires the exact path for the file. which doesn't make sense if i want it on a CD which would change the location of the file for my C: to E:.
