I have a VB.NET Windows Form application which uses DAO, no plans to upgrade it to ADO.NET. Created a Deployment Project to generate the installation.
Tried to install on a clean Windows XP SP1 computer: it worked right away (it installed .NET Framework first, rebooted and resumed my application setup).
Then... as it always happens, the CD goes to the user and... error! After checking everything, I discovered the user didn't have DAO360.DLL registered in his machine.
Is there anyway I can check/fix it during installation? DAO360.DLL is already in the Detected Dependencies of my deployment project, but it was not registered in user's computer. Like in my own installation test (clean Windows XP SP1 computer), registering this DLL may not be necessary. In other cases (like in this user's computer) might be needed.
How can I make sure DAO 3.6 is working in user's computer?
I tried to have Microsoft Data Access Components as prerequisite, but it doesn't appear on the list.
PS: This is an application that should run on computer with .NET Framekwork 2.0 - this was my only requisite... then I was surprised by this DAO problem but I don't think I should listen it as a prerequisite (might be too technical for the user).

I could not figure out the key to installing folders/subfolders/.rtf files during deployment/installation. The key here is to 'add' folders and subfolders to the project in solution explorer, then adding existing item (.text (.rtf files in my case) files) then selecting the .rtf file in solution explorer.go to its properties and under 'Build Action' select 'Content' (very Important!). Then under 'Copy to Output' select 'Copy if newer'!Then in code to access these files you use the following code:
Me.RichTextBoxDisplay.LoadFile(Path.Combine(Application.StartupPath, "KJV BibleOTExodusExodus KJV.rtf"))
Finally after 3 days of research and 2 days at the msdn forum picking peoples minds (smarter than mine) and lots of prayer, I got it!

I have a VB.NET 2008 program that crashes about once a month at a customer location. My log file does not include any clues of the crash, the program just dies with the infamous SEND / DONT SEND window. So I need to setup my customers so that in the event of a program crash, a DUMP file is created automatically, without any user intervention. Everything I read on internet indicates that the drwtsn32.exe program does that.

I designed an application to download a file from the Internet onto a selected location on the local computer. This application too, has a form-building error.Debug Error Message: An error occurred creating the form. See Exception.InnerException for details. The error is: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I'm trying to make my application append to a simple log file when it executed and when it's closed. So far, so good (see code)
However, what I would like to do, is have future lines of text to be written on the next line instead of the same line. And possibly a date stamp.
I'm not quite sure how to implement this as far as syntax goes.
My.Computer.FileSystem.WriteAllText("C:log.txt", "Application was closed ", True)

OK I am as green as they come and just want to write a simple app that when it starts loads data into a few fields from the previous use.
I am thinking of using an XML file written to disk to hold this info, (I am open to any suggestions how to do this as simple as possible)
so I am going through the "Wrox VB2010 for beginners" and entering the code to create a class and apparently the compiler doesnt like something about saving stream as a string: It says "Value of type 'System.IO.FileStream' cannot be converted to 'String"
Imports System.IO
Imports System.Xml.Serialization
Public Class sdata

I am new in forum and in VB 2008 as well, I have a little background in VB6 I am making a program for a project and I need to calculate some mathematical formulas and the results I want to send them in an external device via serial port. To be more specific I have a function, like y(x)=a*x+y0. I get the starting and ending x and y from textbox and I calculate the respective y but I want to store each x and the resulting y(x) in order to send them after the completion of the complete calculation to the serial port.I have tried with datagrid view and dataset but I cannot fill the tables with the results.Does anyone have any idea what I can do.

I have a program that works I would just like it to be able to find the file with out me specifying the actual path. Because if it is on someone's computer other than mine the path might not be correct and it will not function properly. Here is the code I have done. The file it is looking for is of course names.txt. I have not been able to find much info on this.

I am creating XML files by combining 3 text files; Header contains the start of the XML file, Body contains a repeating section of XML with placeholders that will be replaced for each entry in the database and Footer contains the end of the XML file.Currently I am using Stream writer to create the XML file, the problem comes when the data I am adding in the body section contains reservered characters e.g. > < & etc as the XML will break. Is there a better way? The XMLWriter examples I have seen seem to start from the premise of a complete XML document, which I don't have.

Im using the my.computer.network.downloadfile (something like that) to download the html source to a text file. It has been working for about a year now.
Today it stopped working and the downloaded files are empty. Ive talked to the people at the website, and they say they havent done anything. But they always say that.
Is there a way to "block" an automated download process of this kind, and how do I get around it?

I want the report to automatically print after the report in the reportviewer has finished rendering.I need a code that selects/finds the default printer for that PC and then prints the report, using the properties set in the report (like the Margins)So to sum this all up: I want to skip the part of the print dialog and selecting the default printer. The report must just render, print and close the form.

I am trying to create a program that will have an option to automatically log you into a couple sites when you press the Start button. I have a separate form that you can open and put in your Username and Password for each site. There is a button that when you press it it is supposed to write to a file (C:DesktopAccounts.txt) you username and password so that when it is opened again you will not have to type them again. I had it working perfectly until I added some code so that it will remember if you had the check box checked and have the text box as read only (if check box is not checked). I even tried deleting the new code but it still will not write to the file, but it can read from it if I put the information in manually.

The company I work for has given me VS 2008 to build a Data Entry form. They want me to put check boxes, which I've done and now they want a drop down list that when selected pulls up different check box items that populate into a different screen. I'm new to this, but don't feel it should be that hard.

Where to begin trying to research building a program that can inventory a program and then build a spreadsheet where I can name tabs based on directory names and then color them according to their level in the directory tree. The number of directories and/or total number of files shouldn't be a limiting factor if possible. I would also like all subdirectories to be after the tab for their parent directory.

I'm working on a Win 7, Office 2010, and VB 2010 Express machine. The purpose of this is to assist with our data retention policy at my company. I want to split up directories on the tabs to make it easier to search and then employee's can go into certain directories to make files they used for a project so those can get archived and the unused files can be deleted.

i have a problem where i've hard coded the file path of an access database i'm using with a VB.net program. this means that if i publish the program the database doesn't publish with it and i have to "ship" the program with the the database file separately and create another form so the user can say where the file is held. i don't want to do this.is there any way to get the access database file to publish with the program and then access that file path by code? for example the database file is held in the same folder as the installed program and then is accessed by code so there is no need to use a specific file path.
