Random Number Generator Generating Same Number Many Times?

Sep 17, 2011

I have this program generating a firstname and lastname from a file. When I run this program I enter information in three textboxes. The first two are the salary low and high(salary1.text, salary2.text) and the last one is the number of "copies"(copies.text) that I want.. When I put a number such as 10 in the text box it outputs some of the same names. The firstname file has around 100 records and the lastname file has about 1000 records Why is it generating the same name The problem is even worse if I do something like 1000 copies.. it outputs the same thing 8 times and then does something different another 8 times

Random Number Generator Generates Same Numbers 19 Times Out Of 20 ?

Apr 1, 2010

I am trying to write a random number function that can just be called from my main module to generate different random numbers. I have tried this several different ways and I am having odd results. Approximately 19 times out of 20 the numbers come back exactly the same, but approximately 1 in 20 they come back as two different numbers. Im using Visual Basic Studio 2008. Here is the code I have so far, or rather, the current version of my many tests I have been running to try and figure it out. Sometimes it takes many runs of the program before the two seperate numbers apear.I've been researching it and have come up with nothing so far.I know I could put them in the module section as two different randoms and it works, but I get extra points if i use a couple classes in my program. This is the main module.

Sub Main()
Dim randomNumOne As New RandNum[code]...........

Random Number Generated Between 0-10 - Cant Get To Loop

Feb 21, 2010

I am using some arrays that are pre-filled and I am having a random number generated between 0-10. That random number will then go in to all 5 arrays and pull the item from that location. I think try to take the sentence that is generated into another string. Once that is complete I then go through the final array to pull all the sentences and concatenate them together.

Currently I've only been able to get 1 sentence to print out of 5...a fresh pair of eyes would prob see where I am going wrong...I've been at this for awhile and wouldn't mind some advice to where I am going wrong.

Random Number Generator And For Loop?

Oct 3, 2009

I am doing a Coin Toss program for school and I'm getting my butt kicked by this thing. The following are the instructions exactly as my instructor gave them:Use the random number generator (see the code below) to simulate a coin toss. First ask the user for the number of repetitions. Next, set up a For loop to execute that many times. Each time you enter the loop, call the random number next method. Assume that a random value <= 5 is considered a "Heads"; a value >5 is a "Tails". That is, if the random value is <= 5, add one to an accumulator named intNumHeads. If the random value is >5 add one to an accumulator named intNumTails. When the loop finished, output the number of heads and the number of tails in a text field with appropriate labels.Dim intRandom As New Random()Dim intNumber As IntegerintNumber = intRandom.Next(0, 9) In my application I have the click event of the "Flip Coin" button coded as follows:

Class frmToss
Private Sub btnFlip_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)

Save Multiple Times By Doing A LOOP Depending On The Number Of Checked Checkboxes On A Datagridview .NET 2010?

Oct 11, 2011

I have a datagridview with checkboxes in the first column and I want to do a loop on saving the serialnumber(s) when the users decides to check a number of checkboxes Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

[Code]...

the problem with this code is that it only inserts the serial number of the LAST checked checkbox and the number of entries of it depends on the number of checked checkbox for example ... if I checked the rows with the serialnumber 123 and 55652341, first the row with the serial number 123 then second 55652341, only 55652341 appears in the database and it is entered twice(twice because two checkboxes are checked)

VS 2010 Draw Rectangle (random Times, Random Location)?

I am practicing using the drawing commands, and have gotten a grass background and black happy face that moves around the background. It's a 10x10 grid of 50 pixels.I want (at the moment, when i press enter) it to generate a random number of trees (15 ~ 25) at random locations on the background. Creating A New Random Generator Each Time Should Reduce The Number Of Random Repetitions?

May 26, 2011

I've read numerous posts and threads about random number generation, but I havent' run across this.If I generate a bunch of random numbers, the results are radically different if I create a new Random generator for each number than if I use on Random generator for all the numbers. The results are much more consistent and evenly distributed if I use the same Random generator.I would have thought the opposite, because creating a new Random generator each time should reduce the number of random repetitions, if a different time slice is used to create the random number.[code]......

Filewatcher Stopping At Random Times

Apr 9, 2010

I have created a form in which it watches a specified path for excel file changes - this part is on load.

[Code]...

This is supposed to delete any temp file that gets through. Then, when it finds an excel file, it will try to open it. I noticed the sub kept launching when I opened the excel file, so just another check to make it safe. the two variables filearray1 and filearraypath2 are public - filearray1 is an array list with full excel paths (another thread loops through the array and does the operations of the excel file) and filearraypath2 makes sure that the same excel file won't be added twice in a row.

Now, this works really well, but for some reason, at some point, the addfile sub won't kick off, even if excel files are changed, created, deleted, anything. I set a breakpoint on the first 'if' line of the addfile sub, opened an excel file and made changes, or created a new one, and let the program run for 10 minutes and the breakpoint never hit.

Number Guessing Game - Allows A User 10 Attempts To Guess A Random Number Between 1 And 50

Nov 9, 2009

I am attempting to create a game in Visual Studio 2008 that allows a user 10 attempts to guess a random number between 1 and 50. I have a label box in which I would like to display the remaining guesses as they decrement. The code so far appears below.

My two (I am sure very basic) questions are:

1. How would I pass the random integer generated through the Generate Integer function to the AmIRight button's click function? I was trying to decrement the counter each time the "Am I Right " button is pressed.

2. I would also like to evaluate each "guess" when the "Am I right button is pressed. Is it possible to nest a Select Case statement in a For Next Loop?

Create A Random Number Generator That Iterates Through A Series Of Number Between An Upper And Lower Bound?

Jun 24, 2010

i wanted to create a random number generator that iterates through a series of number between an upper and lower bound. say between 1 and 100. Basically I want the number generator to pick the numbers randomly and then display them until all 100 numbers are picked without any duplicates. so thats easy I can code that. But what I don't know is how to show those numbers in the order they are generated on a windows form. So i have basically a variable that I will let be changed 100 times (or however many times I want, I don't want their to be a size constraint just using 100 as an example) and each time the number is generated I want it displayed on screen (in a list or something not sure what. Hopefully some type of scrollable list) and each successive number also to be displayed in same format beneath it so that I can see the list in its entirety. What type of form control do i use for that? I could do messagebox.show for each iteration but then user is required to hit ok after each iteration and that would obviously be a bad idea if user selected a large number to work through. Anyways, code isn't exactly necessary just point me in the right direction, i.e.what control (if any) to use.how to format the change in data?

VS 2008 Very Different Times For The Same For Next Loop?

Sep 15, 2010

I have about 1.000 text files in a folder, and I wanto to make some statistics reading the files content. In the first place I store the files path + name in a MyFiles() array, then, when I press a "Start" button I read the several files:

For x As Integer = 0 To MyFiles.Length - 1
FileReader = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText(MyFiles(x))
(data processing)
(data processing)
next

then I have copied and pasted the first 500 files in a new folder and added to the code if x > 500 the stop The strange thing is this: to elaborate the 500 files of the second folder takes about 4 seconds, to elaborate the first 500 files of the first folder (THAT ARE IDENTICAL TO THE 500 FILES OF THE SECOND FOLDER) takes 7 seconds. The same identical code takes different times to elaborate the same identical files if they are stored in different folders with different files number.

Random Number Lotto Match With User Number Picks?

Nov 4, 2008

I am trying to create a lotto simulation, but don't know how to continue.I am using numericupdowns to allow users to select 6 lotto numbers. and labels to display what they have chosen, but i'm not sure how to prevent duplicates without creating a large number of If statementsMy question is, is there an easier way to prevent duplicates without writing a bunch of if statements?here is my code:

Public Class Form1 Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click Dim Lotto1, Lotto2, Lotto3, Lotto4, Lotto5, Lotto6 As Single Lotto1 = Val(NumericUpDown1.Text) lblLotto1.Text = Lotto1 Lotto2 = Val(NumericUpDown2.Text) lblLotto2.Text = Lotto2 Lotto3 = Val(NumericUpDown3.Text)

[code]....

I don't understand how to save the user selected numbers, let the computer generate 6 random numbers, and match the two sets of numbers together to see how many matches there are. As far as I understand the numbers should be stored in 2 separate arrays and then matched together to find any matches.
