View 4 RepliesI've recently noticed that a solution can contain multiple projects. I'd like to know if I can create a form that exists in multiple projects, so i can edit one form (or class) instead of six, and have it published in each one of them separately? I hope that makes sense....I seek not answers, but understanding, that I may not solve, but learn.
What good is a fish without the skill to catch it?
I got two projects. GUI/Console and I want to have them in the same project directory with two different projects so:
C:Project1GUI.VBPROJ
C:Project1Console.VBPROJ
The problem is simple: It will overwrite the My Project directory, how to change this?
Hi: How can I share the Main Module1 between projects? I have project1 in vb.net and contains Module1 (Sub Main of the application) project2 in C# in project2 I have a form1 class that contains a subroutines that need to reference 6 variables that are declared and instantiated in the project1 in the main Module1. Module1 at present is been compiled as Class Library, plus will be a reference of project2 and because I need this variables referenced from project1 it wont compile of course because they are not declared.
View 2 RepliesI have a working Windows Forms app (split into an EXE and a few DLLs). Now I've been asked to look at creating another app (MyAppLite) that has only a very small subset of the functionality. Think of it as similar to MS Word Viewer vs. MS Word.
Everything that I need to build MyAppLite is contained in the main solution - essentially I need to use a couple of the WinForms and whatever bits in the DLLs they call into.
What would be the best way to do this?
I was thinking of creating another Project in my solution for MyAppLite, then adding the necessary source files as links (using Add Existing Item > Add As Link in Solution Explorer).
I definitely wouldn't want to maintain 2 copies of the source code. FYI it's a .NET 2.0 VB app, using VS2008.
Am I able to share/access xsd in different projects in a solution? If so, how do I do it. If not, what are the other options.
What I intend to do is have the xsd in the DAL project and have the business logic checkings/validations in BLL project.
I've had this problem with both VS 2010 and Visual Web Developer 2010. I want to save my projects on a network share (which I have as a mapped drive), because our network drives are backed up daily. For some reason though, VS only shows local drives when I try to save a project - all my network drives do not show up.
View 1 RepliesIs it possible to share subscripted variables and their data between forms? So far I can't see the variables I made public in one form, in a second form.
View 5 RepliesSay I have public string variable called "_Test" on Form1, how can I allow Form2 to edit/read the variable from that form? I tried putting this on Form2:
Public _Test as String = Form1._Test
But if I start Form2 without Form1 being open, it gives me an exception.
Im trying to get a list of owners of all the shares on a server. So far I have come up with the following:
colSWbemObjectSet = objSWbemServices.InstancesOf("Win32_SecuritySettingOfLogicalShare")
For Each objSWbemObject In colSWbemObjectSet
Dim securitydesc As Object = objSWbemObject.Setting
MsgBox(securitydesc.Owner.Name, MsgBoxStyle.Critical, objSWbemObject.Element)
Next
[Code]...
how to share and edit variables between forms? I want the user to be able to enter a value into a textbox and the program store it and then load another form and do calculations and display answers but I can't get it to work.
View 2 RepliesI've been poking around in some projects written by one of our contractors, and he seems to be storing a lot of settings in the main "app.config" file for the application, using, for example:
<add key="SomeClass/SomeValue" value="False"/>
And then referencing the key value in the "SomeClass" class in "SomeProjectLibrary" using
ConfigurationManager.AppSettings.Get("SomeClass/SomeValue")
While this works, I guess, it also pretty much sucks. I was wondering if anyone knew of some more elegant way of creating variables in the "app.config" file, which could then be used across various applications within a Solution?
Is it possible to change application settings between two projects?
Here's what I'm trying to do- let me know if there's a better way, though:
I have two projects involved, a UI layer and a data access layer. I can modify the connection string at runtime in the UI, but I want to be able to set the connection string on the data access layer the same way. Right now I'm trying to use application settings but I don't know how to access settings from one project in another.
What it is the option Enable application framework that I found in Visual Studio under VB.NET WPF projects Application settings?I found it enabled by default and the "Shutdown mode" configured as "On last windows close". But for me is not really clear what does it mean that setting and also the other settings listed in that combo box.
View 1 RepliesHow do I rearrange the Settings variables in VB.Net 2010 to be near the ones they are related to? I edited the app.config file to rearrange them, but when VB loaded again they were still shown in the old order.
View 2 Replieshow would I do a loop with different my.settings variables?
ie lots of variables
My.Settings.numberofsites = 3
My.Settings.SiteDesc1 = Home
My.Settings.SiteDesc2 = Work
[Code]....
This would give me an error as there is no variable called SiteDesc.... but I actually want it to return SiteDesc1, then SiteDesc2 etc.
Im studying vb coding at the moment and im designing a reasonably small text based game using the windows console and so far i have a nice working game but the main problem is that the game restarts when you end the console, obvious i know. Been trawling through pages looking at different ways to save multiple variables for multiple uses such as a save/load feature and most pages have confused me, people asking for help with commands im not common with. So far i've tried using my settings to save the variables in a test program but can't get it to work?I have in settings a variable called gold with a scope of user as an integer and i have this code to try and utilise it
Module Module1
Sub Main()
Dim answer As String
[code]....
Which is the best way to store global variables, in My.Settings or My.Namespace. The reason I ask is because I need to know certain boolean values if certain forms are open from other forms. At present I am defining Global Boolean variables in My.Application, which give the result I require.
View 3 RepliesWhen I open Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express, the following message comes up:
Quote: Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. The automatically saved settings file 'visual studio 2010settingsvb expressCurrentSettings.vssettings' cannot be found. You can change this file on the 'Import and Export Settings' Tools Options page. The IDE will use your most recent settings for this session.
I click the 'OK' button, and the Start Page loads with the "Recent Projects" list on the left.
When I click on any of the projects to open them, another message comes up saying:
Quote: Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. "Project Name" could not be opened. Do you want to remove the reference(s) to it from the Recent list(s)?
I read about a potential solution going to "%programfiles%Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0Common7IDE" but I'm not sure how to proceed. Does anyone know why this problem is occuring? Did I truly lose all my projects?
Removing projects from VB2008 start page recent projects list. The above list is getting clogged. How do I remove items from this list?
View 3 RepliesLast year (2010) I came across a FANTASTIC command that allowed me to take a string of variables with a common delimiter and break it all back out into separate variables (possibly an array) with one statement.
[Code]...
As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.
I have code, shown below, that works all except for 1 thing: The variables being passed byRef get passed, but once modified in the else section of the "if me.invokerequired" code of RecordData, the variables are never updated in the calling function. To reiterate, the calling function does not receive the updated data that is in the variables custid and amt.When debugging, I see the data change in the else section of "if me.invokerequired", but once it returns from the callback the data is missing.[code]
View 15 RepliesThe company has been using Visual Studio 2008 and .NET Framework 2.0 for approximately 2 years. During that time we released several versions (4.x.x) of our program to the public and were able to preserve the user's settings using My.Settings.Upgrade.During the past development cycle we upgraded the program to Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 and changed the version to 5.x.x. Now, when a user upgrades from 4.x.x to 5.x.x they lose all of their settings.However, in all upgrades after that point (ie 5.0 to 5.1) all the user's settings are once again preserved.I checked C:Documents and Settings<USER_NAME>Local SettingsApplication DataCompanyName and it contains two directories:
ApplicationName_Url_aaa ApplicationName_Url_bbb
where aaa and bbb are 32 character strings. All of the user.config files for the 4.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_ Url_aaa directory. All of the user.config files for the 5.x.x releases can be found in the ApplicationName_Url_bbb directory.Based on this information it seems like something changed when we converted our program to VS2010 and Framework4 that is now causing a different 32 character string to be generated. However, we have been unable to track it down.
I have the following structure:OLD: frmMain (WinForm)uscStat (UserControl with Grid) In frmMain I'm able to make some settings and load the result of the settings via LinQ into the Grid of the uscStat.

I just wondered if you can or can't save arrays using the settings system object. There seems to be no way of entering it at designtime. It seems implied you cannot create new user settings.subobjects at runtime. I'm looking to find the easiest way to save a populated array of PictureBox's. If the only way is a self/custom made/managed .ini file then I need to know so i can start on that but I was hoping to use some of all this phaff in the new frameworks usefully.
View 3 RepliesI am rewritting my application to conform to ms standards. We used to save all settings to registry for user settings, servername, size and locations.so we are now saving them into My.Settings app.config the only problem is that each time there is an update clickonce will isntall the newupdate but now all settings are loist and user has to save everything all over again..
I am trying to follow the book here but it seems i keep getting stuck somewhere. registry has worked fine for years but i understand we must move on, but if stuff like this happens then i just wasted a long time converting all code to conform for it to not work..
Is there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.
View 3 RepliesI define some global variables of a class as follows:
Private Class MyClass
Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....
But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)
i have created a user setting named 'setmeup' as string, scope = user, value = "magical meow meow!".in my code i access it and assign it a new value like this...my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!"my.settings.save()application.restart()when the application restarts, i expect the my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" but when i check its contents its still "magical meow meow!".but when i use application.exit() instead of application.restart() and manually restart the program, my.settings.setmeup = "howdy cowboy!" which is correct.what must i do? i want to use application.restart() because i don't want the users to double-click the icon again to start the program. i want the program to restart automatically.
View 2 Replies1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...
2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.
Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke
Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?
