VS 2010 Settings - Projects - Message - "Project Name" Could Not Be Opened
Feb 26, 2011
When I open Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express, the following message comes up:
Quote: Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. The automatically saved settings file 'visual studio 2010settingsvb expressCurrentSettings.vssettings' cannot be found. You can change this file on the 'Import and Export Settings' Tools Options page. The IDE will use your most recent settings for this session.
I click the 'OK' button, and the Start Page loads with the "Recent Projects" list on the left.
When I click on any of the projects to open them, another message comes up saying:
Quote: Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. "Project Name" could not be opened. Do you want to remove the reference(s) to it from the Recent list(s)?
I read about a potential solution going to "%programfiles%Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0Common7IDE" but I'm not sure how to proceed. Does anyone know why this problem is occuring? Did I truly lose all my projects?
My program will need to store some settings for when the program gets closed then opened again. I would then like to reload the settings, and I was wondering what is the best way to do this with VB?
I'm running Visual Studio 2010 on a terminal server, and have been, with relatively few problems, for some time. This morning I fired up my PC and over the UK's long weekend, the following issue seems to have developed.I've got a bunch of projects (but not all of my projects, and not all of the projects in a given solution) complaining that a particular file (which does not exist on the computer) cannot be opened, and so those projects will not compile anymore. Here's the error:
Error 31 Unable to open module file'C:Users[username]AppDataLocalTemp2.NETFramework,Version=v4.0.AssemblyAttributes.vb': System Error &H80070003&
I could simply copy the file into that directory and be done with it, I'm pretty sure that will work,EDIT: Okay, now things have gotten to a whole new level of weird. I've rebooted the server, I get the same error message, only now the file it is asking for exists and can be opened in Visual Studio with no problems. another part of the IDE still insists that it's unable to open the module file.
EDIT 2: Can't delete the file because it claims to be open in another program, but I've logged off and logged on again, and there shouldn't be anything accessing it.
EDIT 3: Because there's a wall of comments below his answer, I'll mention here that Jared's suggestion to delete the SUO file for the solutions having the problem (not files specifically to do with any of the problem projects, strangely) was what solved this, eventually.
I've been poking around in some projects written by one of our contractors, and he seems to be storing a lot of settings in the main "app.config" file for the application, using, for example:
<add key="SomeClass/SomeValue" value="False"/> And then referencing the key value in the "SomeClass" class in "SomeProjectLibrary" using ConfigurationManager.AppSettings.Get("SomeClass/SomeValue")
While this works, I guess, it also pretty much sucks. I was wondering if anyone knew of some more elegant way of creating variables in the "app.config" file, which could then be used across various applications within a Solution?
Is it possible to change application settings between two projects?
Here's what I'm trying to do- let me know if there's a better way, though:
I have two projects involved, a UI layer and a data access layer. I can modify the connection string at runtime in the UI, but I want to be able to set the connection string on the data access layer the same way. Right now I'm trying to use application settings but I don't know how to access settings from one project in another.
I am developing a windows service, in vb .et, that launches a legacy application that performs some work. The service acts as a wrapper around the legacy app allowing users to automate an otherwise manual operation.Everything is working great, except occasionally the legacy app displays a messagebox. When it does this the process halts until the message box is closed.
As the service will be running on a server there will be no user to close the message box.The service launches the legacy application in a System.Diagnostics.Process.My question is, is there way to detect that a message box has been displayed by a process that I have started using System.Diagnostics.Process and is there a way to through code to close the messagebox.
I am a beginner using 2008 Express and I am trying to get my application to remember and restore some combobox values. It seems to work fine if the application is opened and closed normally but for some reason it loses the settings if it is opened from the startup folder.
Here is how the startup link is formed:
Dim shortcutFile As String = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.Startup) & "FBNav.lnk" If Not IO.File.Exists(shortcutFile) Then
What it is the option Enable application framework that I found in Visual Studio under VB.NET WPF projects Application settings?I found it enabled by default and the "Shutdown mode" configured as "On last windows close". But for me is not really clear what does it mean that setting and also the other settings listed in that combo box.
Every time vs 2008 loads a projects this error message always display? What will be the effect of this in my development?Im running on Windows 7, 64bit..
I have a project the was written by someone else. I am very new to VB. I am trying to make changes the the project. When I first opened it it went through the conversion with no errors. The report has not errors however when I try to open the project I get the error "vbproj cannot be opened because this project type (.vbproj) is not supported by this version of the application". I am using VB2008 Express and have read all the other responses to the issue but Ijust do not know waht to do.
we are working on a project. three different people are coding the forms seperatly. now we need to integrate all three into one project. how can we doo that in visual studio.net
I am coming to the end of coding this system in Visual Studios 2008 which I took over from a guy who has worked on it for a year.He is not here anymore. He made 9 projects and put them into one solution(screen shot below).I have only published a .NET website for VB and have never published something like this.P3Data is the only one that the publishing tab comes up with. All the other projects the publishing tab does not come up. Why is P3Data bold? How can I publish the whole solution 'P3Data' as one whole entity?
i have a solution that has two projects in it. one is a start up project. can i run the second project runtime by let's say pressing a button when the first one is running??? if so how can i do that?
Okay, so I wrote a few custom ItemTemplates for VS2010 that implement IWizard in VB.NET (4.0). Straight forward enough. They work during my testing, but when someone else deploys and attempts to use any of them, Visual Studio throws an incredibly generic Exception has been thrown by a target of invocation error.
Stranger still, after they open up the project properties and try again... they work. Without changing anything. Anyone have any clue what is going on? Or perhaps even just a way of getting VS to give me a more specific error? I already tried devenv.exe /log but nothing out of the ordinary was there.
My VS 2005 currently allows to create only Projects in C#. Is there any seperate Add In available for download using whcih I can Create VB.Net Projects.
when the message box appears after enter is seleted, is there a way to:- put a title on themessage box?- make the font size larger?- make the box itself larger than the longest text imput?- have the ability to copy to clipboard what is in the message box so it can be pasted
I made a Class Library project that contains the main classes that my Main Project needs because I don't want to main classes when I distribute my project. I've successfully called and used it in my Main Project. But when I started debugging and stepping through my code which involves calling and using the class I wrote in my Class Library, I noticed that the class' file in my Class Library opens up during debug mode.
how can I prevent the Class Library's files from being opened during my Main Project's debug mode?
is there a way to see the My.Settings of one project from within another project within the same solution?I'm guessing the answer is no, they are scoped at the project level
1. I can't find the file which reflects changes to user settings. This might be because I just can't find it (I can see a bunch of user.config files but they are all empty - weird!), or...
2. I'm not actually saving them when I think I am.
Regarding 2. - do I need to invoke
Is this all I need? And if so, why are my user.configs empty?
Small questions about the settings.settings. Are these settings saved into the registry? I'm want to use and external file for my connection-commands. I don't want to use the registry to store the strings. What do you recommend?
I have a VB project using VS 2008 Pro that I have been working on my Win XP SP3 PC for a while now. I am now moving to a different PC with Win 7, 32 bits. I installed VS2008 and VS2010 (also Pro) on the new PC. The source is stored on a server on our network. When I tried to open the project with VS2008 on the new Win 7 I got the following message:The project location is not trusted:
\DevServerProjectsSysMon Running the application may result in security exceptions when it attempts to perform actions that require full trust.I then click Ok and another dialog comes up mentioning:This project includes a password-encrypted key used for signing. Enter the password for the key file to import the key file into the local cryto-store databse for use.The dialog lists a pfx file. Why is it requiring this?
I have one project that manage my database connection (DBServer) and one project as the main system (MainSystem). In DBServer I store all my connection data that I already managed to my.settings (ServerName, DatabaseName, connectionString, etc). How can I get all the my.settings value in DBServer (ServerName, DatabaseName, connectionString, etc) from MainSystem?
I make project 1. I add 10 settings in the Properties->settings section.
I now make a new project. Project 2. But I want to have the same settings as project 1. It would be easier to import the settings from project1. but can this be done.
Ive seen the setting file in the explorer but this code is auto generated so if its copied into project 2 after you save its regenerated again from the properties->settings values.
I have a project that has several different interfaces (a website, a local application, and some webservices), that all use the same class library. The library is an API to a database. Some settings, like log level, database connection etc, i want to store in a single place, and I want them editable. What is the best way to accomplish this? I am concerned both about ease of editing, and ease of access for the dll, as there will be a lot of calls to it and a lot of lookups for the values. I have considered using app.config, a standalone XML file, and writing values to the registry, but I cannot find any good comparisons.
I want to add a setting that uses an enum defined in form1.vb. All the research I've done suggests support for enum type settings is built-in and handled automatically by the VS IDE ... I assume this means it's as easy as defining font or color settings. However, I'm not having much. Are any of you gurus aware of how to set up an enum setting via the Project Settings UI?
In a VB.Net project, you can use the Settings tab of the properties page to define application settings. To reference the settings in code, you use the syntax My.Settings.SettingName in VB.
On the Settings tab, you get to choose the Access Modifier. It may be "Friend" or "Public". Presumably, when you choose "Public", you are making the settings accessible to other assemblies. However, once "Public" is chosen, I can't figure out the syntax to reference the settings of one project from another. In fact, I can't observe any difference between using "Internal" vs. "Public" as the access modifier.
My question: Does choosing "Public" as the access modifier make settings accessible to other assemblies? If so, what is the syntax to reference the settings from other assemblies? If not, what does "Public" do?
