I'm wanting to store some settings for my program in an XML document. I've found plenty of places that allow you to write an XML document to somewhere on the hard drive although I'm wanting to link it in with the project so when the program installs it setups up the XML as well. This is also so when the program uninstalls it removes the XML.So I was wondering how I would go about writing to the XML document in my project, could it be done with Linq?

I have a program which when a button is clicked on a form sends the form to the back, so that Notepad can open on top, then it opens up notepad
Me.SendToBack()
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("notepad.exe", myPath & "*********.txt")
Now what I want to do is to detect when the notepad has been closed then I can bring the form back to the front and I just do not know which commands to use for this to detect a program outside of VS 2010.

I am currently working on a menu driven console program that so far has 4 menu options of checking internet connection, decrypting/encrypting a message, calculator, and a logout, and i am wondering about a few current things.
1. How do i make it to where, when a program starts for the first time, it asks for a user to enter in his data, like signing up for a site for the first time?
2. How do i make it to where the program will save the data entered, and does not delete when the user closed the program.
3. How can i make it to where when a user signs in, his/her data is read correctly? Like an array search for a multidimensional array.For my "New user" sign data i created a function...
Function createNewUser() As String()
Dim name As String
Dim userName As String[code]...

I am coding a program that will allow the user to input 5 payrolls for Store 1, Store 2, and Store 3. The total of the 5 payrolls are then added together and shown in the respective Store's labels. A total label is also there to add up all the totals into one number. The numbers in the label must be in currency form. My problem is the numbers don't add correctly when I hit calculate. The first two numbers add together, but then after that the number just seems to subtract a random amount.
So far I have this --
Public Class Form1
Private Sub Button2_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button2.Click
Me.Close()
End Sub

I am trying to develop a small hotel booking application to be just used by a single user. What would be the best way to store the hotel bookings in the program? I've been thinking between an XML document or a SQL database but im unsure if a sql database would work on a pc without any sql software installed (complete sql noob >.<) or would their be an easier way of storing them?

I want to hear some discussion regarding what is the best way to persist program parameter and variable settings from one run of the program to the next. I used to often use the ubiquitous INI type file in VB6 programs but I am aware that these are not formally supported in .Net programs. I also have a major aversion to adding to the already overwhelming bloat of the Windows registry by using that to store values.

I would like to store some app data in a 'default system folder', so when I launch the program it will know where to look for it's own settings.As a matter of fact I only need to store there a path to the files used by the program. Users will be able to choose where to put them (simplified installation). The program has to know where to look for them.
Am I creating the folder properly? As you can see I'm referring to C:... The folder structure presented here comes from my laptop running on Windows 7 Ultimate. Maybe the C:... can be somehow defined by some sort of a system 'shortcut'. Following the above example the program would look for those in C:... , but maybe I can use something like ~~ default.app.settings.My Program Name ~~~. How does it work? Have no idea how to call it properly, but I'm sure you will know what I mean.

I am currently using vb 2008 and want it so when a user registers it will unlock all the extra features and stay that way even after the user quits and restarts the program... I already have everything set exept for the save feature. I don;t know exactly what to do. I just want to save the settings of my program so that they are the same every time somebody uses the program. I heard that you need to go into Project , then properties and then settings... But I don't understand what to do there...

I have a Visual Studio 2008-SQL Server 2005 app that will be throwing alot at it. It's my testbed learning app. I'm also a student of this craft(43 years young) like another poster posted on another thread. I come from a PICK/BASIC jBase background. Anyway as-is my app has a connection to the database that is opened on form load. I close the connection on form close. It's a one form app currently. Is this wrong? It seems that maybe I should not have a connection opened possibly all day. I'm looking into incorporating Datasets, dataAdapters into my next phase of evolution. I looked at the material and it's tough. For me anyway. But I will get into it. I will fetch the data into a dataset so that I can keep the connection open only for a little while. I was turned on to this "keep the connection just as long as you need it" idea from someth

I am in the situation on preventing connection leaks. and one of the possible solutions is to make sure that all opened connections are closed after transaction. That means closing the sqldatareader too.
I am confused on the part of closing the sqldatareader. if the method that will be read by sqldatareader encounters error, it is not successfully initialize. If this happens, i will encounter an error once i close the sqldatareader. does it mean the most proper way of closing sqldatareader is like this?

What makes it even harder is that I can't replicate this problem on my computer very consistently. Sometimes I will get the error but most of the time I won't. Basically what is happening is I am creating an IE object which my program then controls for a long period of time. What is happening is, if a user exits the program it calls oIE.Quit() then closes the program. This should close internet explorer and all processes associated with it.
But, the iexplorer process doesn't end up closing. Then when the user tries to run the program again we get this error "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80004005): Creating an instance of the COM component with CLSID {0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} from the IClassFactory failed due to the following error: 80004005.".
To fix this we simply close the any iexplorer.exe processes that are open and it will let us create our i.e. object again. This happens also if the program crashes and they try to restart it. I am not sure what is causing this or if I am missing something that has to do with com objects. Here is some code although plugging in this code likely won't reproduce any errors:
'create ie object
oIE = New SHDocVw.InternetExplorer
oIE.Navigate("[URL]")
oIE.Visible = False
oIE.Silent = True
'kill ie object
oIE.Quit()

I'm launching an Access ADE, using Tony Toews auto FE program. The AutoFE programs will, if newer version available, copy the latest version of the ADE from the server, then launch it. My code looks like:
Dim stAutoFE As String = "V:Appsautofestartmdb.exe /cmd /inifile: " & """" & "V:AppsAutoFESSP.ini" & """"
Shell(stAutoFE, AppWinStyle.Hide, True)
System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000) ' Time delay
[code]....
I had to put the Sleep delay in, otherwise the GetObject would open the ADE a second time.But I don't know how long the copy from the server will take, so I need to remove that Sleep line and check that the ADE has opened.

In my next release, i would like to know how many user approximatly are using it, so when ever a user opens my program for the first time on that computer, it sends me, or my website a report telling me that it was opened on a computer. so if 4,000 people download and open it, i should get 4,000 emails or reports

When I open Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express, the following message comes up:
Quote: Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. The automatically saved settings file 'visual studio 2010settingsvb expressCurrentSettings.vssettings' cannot be found. You can change this file on the 'Import and Export Settings' Tools Options page. The IDE will use your most recent settings for this session.
I click the 'OK' button, and the Start Page loads with the "Recent Projects" list on the left.
When I click on any of the projects to open them, another message comes up saying:
Quote: Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. "Project Name" could not be opened. Do you want to remove the reference(s) to it from the Recent list(s)?
I read about a potential solution going to "%programfiles%Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0Common7IDE" but I'm not sure how to proceed. Does anyone know why this problem is occuring? Did I truly lose all my projects?

Is there a way to determine whether processes have been opened or closed during a given time frame? I'm working on code that will take an initial copy of your processes list, and then based on a timer, continue to take copies, which will compared to the initial processes list to determine which processes have been opened or closed until the timer ends. I'm capturing the processes list's in an Array list.
Dim processesList As String //Initial processes list
Dim processActivity As String //Opened or Closed processes
Dim processesAtStart As New ArrayList // Initial processes as ArrayList (To Compare)
Dim processesCheck As New ArrayList // Latest processes as ArrayList (To Compare)

I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and developing a VB.NET application. I'm having strange lockup problems with my program, but only when Internet explorer 8 is opened.
When I cover my form with another window and then uncover it, I find that it has locked up. My program has no references to IE and the only thing it even has to do with IE is using Process.Start with a web address.
My program works fine and exactly as it should, but only when IE is not opened.
Does anyone know why a program would lock up only while IE is running?
Edit: I've done some digging and I've found the offending thread in my program.
I don't know what starts this thread or what it does, but when I kill it, my program no longer freezes. The thread is one of the CreateApplicationContext threads, here is the last few items in the stack trace of that thread.

This always happens to me in Visual Basic. Whenever I save a project from one day and open it again using that same VB version the next day, I can never see the form design. But if I click on Debug, I can see the Form design and only use it as if it were a program.
