View 6 RepliesI am currently using vb 2008 and want it so when a user registers it will unlock all the extra features and stay that way even after the user quits and restarts the program... I already have everything set exept for the save feature. I don;t know exactly what to do. I just want to save the settings of my program so that they are the same every time somebody uses the program. I heard that you need to go into Project , then properties and then settings... But I don't understand what to do there...

I wrote this VB program to be able to throw a device we developed into programming mode where we use an ATMEL Flip installer to upload new firmware. I can program one device after another running the application off of Visual Studio Express 2010 or Visual Studio 2010, but when I go to publish this file and run it on another machine, it becomes unstable and crashes after each upload. On those same computers if I run the raw unpackaged program under Visual Studio Express, the system does not crash, and I can program devices repeatedly.

vb
Imports System.IO

Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click

I would like to store some app data in a 'default system folder', so when I launch the program it will know where to look for it's own settings. As a matter of fact I only need to store there a path to the files used by the program. Users will be able to choose where to put them (simplified installation). The program has to know where to look for them.
Am I creating the folder properly? As you can see I'm referring to C:... The folder structure presented here comes from my laptop running on Windows 7 Ultimate. Maybe the C:... can be somehow defined by some sort of a system 'shortcut'. Following the above example the program would look for those in C:... , but maybe I can use something like ~~ default.app.settings.My Program Name ~~~. How does it work? Have no idea how to call it properly, but I'm sure you will know what I mean.
I want to save settings in my program as follows. I have an import button to open files. How can I make it so when I start up my program next time, they are already "imported" as a setting or something? *Note - I have not tryed anything as I do not have the slightest clue how.
View 1 RepliesTo save data to your program using My.Settings. To do this go to your program's properties and to Settings. Create your variables there and to access them, here's an example:
[Code]...
I coded a small application in VB Express 2010 and I wish any one could provide for me some code on how to save personal settings from an options form so that the end user don't have to keep making their personal choices every time that start my application that I created.
Personally I don't have a clue on how to accomplish this feature with in VB Express 2010.
I used check boxes and radio buttons in the options section on a form for the end users choices.
I have created a bunch of user settings using my.settings.*** and only save these upon form_closing for the time being.I wanted to save the settings every 30 or so seconds, so I created a timer with 30 second tick intervals. Inside the tick event of that timer I included the code that I had in the form_closing event. While it works to save the settings, it also 'freezes' or 'skips' the main program for about a second or 2 while it's saving. The code to save settings includes looping through at least 2 arrays and adding them to the settings specialcollection object one item at a time.Is there a better way to accomplish this, without 'locking' up the main form for a second or so? Is it feasible to loop through all the settings in a different thread (can you access settings cross-thread)?
View 1 RepliesI want to hear some discussion regarding what is the best way to persist program parameter and variable settings from one run of the program to the next. I used to often use the ubiquitous INI type file in VB6 programs but I am aware that these are not formally supported in .Net programs. I also have a major aversion to adding to the already overwhelming bloat of the Windows registry by using that to store values.

I have developed a program with vb2010, created an installer with installaware and installed the program on my develop laptop and on my normal desktop pc (both win 7 64bits, but program runs on 32 bits). So on my laptop it run perfectly, but when I try to run it on my desktop pc, the only thing I see is the admin message (the program needs admin rights) and than nothing happends (even checked the taskmanager, it shows the program for a short while and closes it even as fast as it opens).I don't know what went wrong, the installer checks the framework which is needed (4.0), but I have that already installed on my desktop pc.

I'm tryin to run the program on a pc. Where I got NO admin-rights.

label1.text = "Process started: " & e.NewEvent.Properties("ProcessName").Value gives a error.
i want to move a program that already is running, and by move, i mean change the x and y coordinates of the application on the screen. how would i go about doing this?
View 4 RepliesI've just created a program in Visual Basic.NET 2010 Express Edition, and the program works great on my computer. Unfortunately, when I try running it on other computers, the process on the Task Manager for it comes up for literally 2 seconds and then goes away, and the program does not run. Basically, the program doesn't open. I'm not sure why this is happening, and I'm not getting any errors.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit, and I've tried getting it to work on two other computers, with no luck. The first one had Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit, and the second one had the same operating system as my computer. All computers have the .NET Framework 4 Client Profile installed, which is what my application is compiled to work with. I also tried compiling it to use .NET Framework 4 (without the Client Profile), and that didn't help.
If it helps, my References are as follows (which I believe are the defaults):
- Microsoft.VisualBasic.PowerPacks.Vs
- System
- System.Core

I'm creating a program and i want it to secretly save when the user clicks on save.
In other words, i have made it so that it saves twice. Once for the user to read (like a fancy copy) and another that the program uses to open up the form.
Currently when pushed, 2 save dialog boxes come up after each other. I don't want this to happen. I want 1 to come up (the user friendly, fancy version) which is the easy part, but i also want the other 1 to save automatically and secretly without asking the user to set the destination.
My VB.net framework 4 windows program work fine for the users on Windows XP machines if they are in the local Administrator Group. I would like to setup this click once application to run as an administrator so the user doesn't need to be in the Administrator group. The program is reading the"C:Documents and Settings" & User & "Local SettingsTemp" folder looking for files with extension like "emf", "tmp" and "htm" and then deleting the files if they are older than 24 hours. We have a third party application that adds these file and doesn't delete them so I need the users to run this cleanup program.
View 2 RepliesI've been working on a program that generates a batch file, then when you press a button, it executes that batch file. There are multiple batch files attached to each item in the list box.
[code]...
The only thing that it does when I press the button, is starts the batch file, then goes to function searchtitle, which executes the batch file again when it finds out it didn't work properly. The button text doesn't change, none of the items are being added to my first list box, and I can't do anything to the window after pressing the button. It constantly opens the batch file every 5 seconds or so.
The program allows users to insert Documents along with a bunch of their attributes into the program. The documents are stored in a relational database. One of the required functionalities is allowing the user to look for such documents. The User normally search directly for the obvious attributes of the document, like a unique ID, or it's Title. The problem is that from the search parameters is not allways known which ones will the user fill. For example the user inserts the name and version of the deocument, another time the user enters part of the Title and the person that delivered the document, or might just enter the document number and nothing else. Some of the data might even be incomplete, like title, name of the person who created the document and so on. The idea from the person who designed the system (I'm only reimplementing it) was to allow easier searches for the user, and allowing the user to search for more parameters tod with the idea that "the more parameters, the more specific results", since the results are always group of documents instead of single documents.
View 14 RepliesSo here is where I'm at, I've built a program to organize my programs. I've got the tabs and all of that, everything on it works fine except I have one issue now. Every time I close the program then open it again, any files I've added into it have disappeared so I would have to constantly run this program and if i restart my computer I would have to re-insert the programs into it. I'll include what I have so far in the way of the coding. But I was wondering, how do I get it to remember what I've put into those ListView boxes?

Is there a way to maintain application modified Settings in the settings files after a program update? i.e. I have 10 or so values in the settings file and the users can modify them... when I send a program update they revert back to what I initially programmed them to be.

View 1 RepliesI am currently working on a family project which is based on "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" show. There is a huge diffrence between the show and my project. My project is a christmas edition and the goal is not to get money or something, since I will not add it... Erhmm... Let me get to the point. I have already designed a layout and scripted some things. I have about thirty questions but I do not want them to always spawn in the same array, if you know what I mean. I want the program to randomly choose one of those thirty questions and NEVER choose the same question in the same program run. By the way, there are four options on my project: A, B, C and D. I have got everything, I just need a code.
