I have a stored procedure that repeats a block of T-SQL statements using WHILE logic until it finds a matching record in a table. When I execute the procedure directly from the SQL Management Studio, it works and returns a record, even when the statements within the WHILE logic have to be repeated over and over again before a matching record is found.
However, when I use the same stored procedure as the commandtext property of an sqlcommand object in Visual Studion 2008 (VB) and call the executereader method of the sqlcommand, the resulting SqlDataReader will only return a row if the T-SQL statements within the WHILE logic find a matching record after a single pass. If it takes more than one pass to find a matching record the SqlDataReader does not return a row. It's like it abandons the execution of the stored procedure after the first pass of the statements within the While logic, disregarding the repetition.

Because after executed somehow the 2nd inside the loop did not execute or insert data.
I am currently having a headache on how to solve this problem that i am facing. here is the situation: I have a combobox and a list box on the main form. The combobox will get the data from the ms access database. In the database, i have the details of a person's IC, Name and DOB say for eg on one entry I have D215311523C,SHAWN,13/04/1987 So now, my combobox on form load will show the list of dates in the database to allow the user to search base on the date itself by clicking on the selected date. So when the user clicks on the particular date say 13/04/1987, people in the database whose birthday is 13/04/1987 will be shown on the listbox.Meaning to say if i have 3 entries whose dates are the same 13/04/1987, 3 entries will appear. If there is only two entry, then two results will be shown. But now, when i do a single click on the date, one result will be shown. That is correct. But the problem is when i click on the same date again, three of the same results will be shown on the list box. that is it will display : 13/04/1987 13/04/1987 13/04/1987 which is not the case. Then it will show more duplicates of the same results if i click more times on the same date which should not be the case.

I am using a datagrid in my where i am having four columns. In first column the parameter values are entered and in the second column measured value is entered and in third column the nominal value is entered.Inthe fourth column the result is displayed by subtracting the measured value and nominal values. I am doing this calculation in Datagrid cell validated event. What i want is,there will be many rows in the grid,when typing the value in the third column the corresponding result will be displayedin the rowof theresult column,save button will be displayed while the form loads,when the calculate part is completed that is there should not any cell of the resut column empty then i should enable the save butto.

Below is an UpDate Statement I am practising with David Sceppa's book ADO .NET 2.0 Core Reference pages 467 - 468. I can supply the parameter values for "parameter_New" by doing something like:

And so on...My problem is how to supply the value of "paramete_Old" to be able to compare before update. I gues it has to do with obtaining the Original values of the rows based on RowVersion but I don't know how to effect it.

I just read about DataSet in VB.NET, it uses disconnected concept. My question is: if my apps has "List All" button that query data from 1 table in the database, and that table has "very very very" many rows, so my DataSet will be filled with those data and eat up memory. Can I limit the data that being put to the DataSet from that query? But I want to be able to retrieve the next data from the same query if the user want to see it?
For example:
I have 1000 rows in my database, and i query all of them. But I just want 200 rows being inserted to my DataSet, but if the user want to see rows number 201 and so on, I want to be able to retrieve the next 200 rows, and so on. So it just like cutting those data into a group of 200 rows. Can I do this with the concept of "disconnected" of the DataSet?
I have a Stored Procedure which returns 10 columns of data. Using cmd.ExecuteScalar() returns the value of the 1st column from the 1st record. How can I change this so that I can return different columns, by specifying their alias/dataitem name?

I am almost finished building my application. All the data need is being inputted from various locations. I have a form that is suppose to consolidate all this data into a specific format. There are 47 fields that have to be populated and/or calculated based on two fields, the Username and a date range (this part is done). I was trying to set each of the TextBoxes equal to the SQLCommand that would return the proper value, but i am not calling it correctly. Would somebody please take look, is there something i am missing, do i need to write it in a function? I have had to use the Select statement itself in a couple of filters so I'm pretty sure that is correct, but i need help getting it to run the sqlcommand.[code]

View 8 RepliesI have a VB.net script that runs a simulation on several machines within the domain. During this simulation, a login is initiated to an application via a web portal. After the login, the connection to a specific Citrix server (whichever is least busy) is established. At this point, I want to run a Netstat -r | find (IP Range of server farm) in command line. From what I have deduced, I probably won't be able to do what I want from the command line and everything will have to be with in the VB.net module using System.Net.NetworkInformation. I am a Citrix Administrator with a decent level of .net experience but I am having trouble with this.

Without the objCommand.CommandText = String.Empty line the CommandText is appending the insertSQL but that doesn't make any sense to me because I would expect the objCommand's commandText to be empty since it is in a using block.
i tried this sqlcommand select max(food) from foods and i tried this dim x as double=cdbl(cmd.executescalar)and it throws the the exception {System.Invalid CastException}because the food table is empty and the max(food) is null how can i fix that because i want to take the value and add one to it so do i need to catch the error or try another conversion option?

I can see this SP from VS 2008 in the Server Explorer. So the problem seems to be that I don't know how to connect a data adapter to an SP. Just a string query.
I'm using the following select statement and it works fine but I need it to AutoComplete the results that contain the term as well and not just the results that start with the term. To clarify, if I type in "phrase" it won't AutoComplete the result "my phrase" but if I type in "my" it will. Anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong? View 5 RepliesI've got a conversion utility that basically copies values from one table to another. It's worked great for a while, but I've run into a strange issue with one customer. They got through 1.5 million records with the utility but now it is completely halted.When calling a stored procedure from VB.Net, it just hangs until the SqlCommand times out.Calling the same sproc from Management Studio executes instantly. My VB.Net code for the SqlCommand is below (insertConn is defined and opened earlier, dr is a SqlDataReader that has been populated in a previous step from completely different SqlConnection and SqlCommand instances):

I'm calling Sqlcommand.ExecScalar() - stepping through the stored proc works fine, right under
RETURN @RecordNum
@RecordNum correctly contains a bigint, as scoped. When I step into the RETURN.. I get an exception thrown, that visual studio does not seem to be able to capture.
The stored procedure works fine when executed directly, and returns a value without problem, and it seems like all is well, stepping through it from my code.
But as soon as I step into 'RETURN @RecordNum' (and recordnum contains a valid number..) BOOM! EXCEPTION! (and no details in the exception either back in visual studio.
I'm blaming a glitch in the matrix.
I've turned off even assigned the return from the ExecScalar to anything, same result.. I've tried ExecReader(), same result. I have turned NO COUNT on and off, same result. If I wasn't already bald, I would be now!

I have three ways of adding parameters to my query commented out above. The all seem to return 1781 records (which is all of the records) and will not filter out to what the UserName variable equals which should reduce it to 32 rows.
I use a Console.WriteLine to show that the UserName is indeed my username. But it seems to not be getting passed to the query properly. I tested the Stored Procedure before even starting in on the program, so I know it functions properly. I just don't know what I'm missing from a VB.NET perspective to get the same results into my DataTable.
