View 1 RepliesI have built an excellent licensing key system which works well on desktop pc's. Basically I run an algorythm on the Hard Disk Serial Number and the Customer Name. While this is not totally brilliant, it seems to work really well (on desktop machines or machines with real hard disks). Now that we come to Tablet PC's, I have found that the Serial Number of the "DISK" which is normallyan SSD is the same from one machine to the next - so all unlock codes end up the same. How about making a unique code for each machine I install my application on?

For example I want in this key to contact 2 values: registered_to, expiry_date.
I want the licence key to be some sort of large string like: 2349ASDGKLASD87ASDGALSDK8ASD80972K.
I would need to create some way to create keys use some sort of algorhithm that decrypts the key and grabs the registered_to and expiry_date values. It also needs to check that the key string has some sort of check digit like credit cards have, so no-one can just type in a few random letters/numbers and it accepts.
I'm an old programmer who knows VB6. I want to write an application and distribute it to a friend. I have not enough time to learn now Visual Basic Express 2010. What can I do ? How may I obtain a license for this ?

So if a client pays more they get more features in the same application. Is it possible that i could keep one standard application but features in my application get enabled / disabled depending upon what license key user enters. MY problem is when the user tries to select an item, say Detail, having focus on the listbox, when pressing the keys D the item Detail selects but on next key e, it goes on to the Item starting with E. (in vb6 listbox property Sorted = true would solve this problem, which i am not getting with vb 2005/2008)
So, how can i achieve the multiple keypress on the listbox (without using any textbox to select items) to select the typed items in the list.
3 years ago I developed a vb.net application that connect to sql express 2005 data base.The application worked fine.e replaced our computers, so we installed the application again. (The same exe file, the same sql server and so on).Now, only when loading few forms I receive the following message: n error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)Note that when we log in to the application, a connection is needed. The user verifying is working fine; it means that the connection is working properly.

To be very brief the application interacts with a database and performs several actions (Insert Delete Select etc..).I am using several Gridviews, ListBoxes etc and I am not happy with the presentation outcome and the functionality provided by asp.net. In simple words my application looks bad, outdated and unprofessional.I figured that using Windows Forms that will be incorporated to the ASP ap.I have created a Windows Form Control Library to use the dll created in my app as a user control. I found out that this is not supported in .NET Framework 4 (is this true? or am i doing something wrong?). Is there any way to make my application have the 'look and feel' of a windows application? Please note that it is has to be a web app and the clients should not have to download any other application to interact with the server.

I am trying to make an application which logs on to a server using the telnet protocol runs a couple of commands and stores the output of these commands in a text file.The problem is that I cant really seem to figure out how to negotiate the telnet commands. I have done a packet capture of a telnet session todifferent servers using a packet capturing program and I dont seem to find any fixed pattern. Every server negotiates the command in its own different way and in a different sequence, moreover the commands exchanged are not the same.
What I want to do is to exchange the bare minimum commands which will allow me to log on to any server via telnet, run my commands, take the output and logout.I have searched the internet for such a set of 'general' telnet commands but I wasnt able to find any.

This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?
Have a VB.net application that installs initially from CD and then when the user gets into the internet the application updates. In order to better support problems with this application is has been suggested in the past to uninstall it and do a fresh re-install. However, in investigation it was determined that the uninstall does not consider all installed objects and does not uninstall the CD install.Can the uninstall functionality be modified to catch the other instances of this application and also uninstall them?
