other than GML (Yoyogames.com Game Maker Language), I am new to the coding world. The only "major" project I have completed using VB is a computer calculator that exactly mimics the capabilities of Windows 7's calculator. Yesterday, I began a Chatbot program for my girlfriend. Lol. I have used the instr() function to answer most of the questions or answers which are typed into the textbox1. I find this extremely troublesome because when using the instr() function you cannot say instr(textbox1.

Reading XML And Storing In Variable?

I am trying to retrieve a 'tag'(Is it called that?) from an XML webpage. Once I make a post request from my vb.net app it sends a command to my online webserver and redirects me to a page that has entries that change each time. The page that im redirected to that changes each time looks something like this:

<mainpage> <id>hello</id> <random>176</random> </mainpage>

What vb.net code would I use to retrieve the id (In this case 'hello') and store it in a variable.

I obfuscate exe using Eazfuscator.For two times someone deleted all files from ftp account,I suppose he got the ftp password,is it possible to got it from my app exe ?Is it enough protected ?

I have a combo box with items in, each time I click a button I want it so whatever is selected is stored in a variable and if the button is selected again then it stores whatever is selected in the next variable. I know all the code for selecting items in a combo box and transferring it to a variable but the problem I cannot do is the part where each time a button is clicked it stores whatever is selected in the combo box to the next variable.

I have the following LINQ query:

I then pull the first returned ID like so:

Dim building_id As String = find_building_id.FirstOrDefault.id

This works fine, except with the person has a ' in their last name, like M'arta. In this case I get a NullReferenceException.

Okay, the problem appears to be that when I am capturing the name initially from a GridView it is inserting into the value a #39 instead of ' and then LINQ is keeping things correct, so I end up with a non-match since it is attempting to match:

M#38arta = M'arta

For a school programming project we are supposed to create a database with 2 tables country, and continent.then we populate country with every country name, population and continentID. For continent we populate with each continent name.

i have completed this step, and i am able to run a linq query to display all countries and corresponding continent into a datagridview. My problem arises because we are supposed to display each record one at a time, and be able to cycle through one at a time. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this.

for example if i made a query to select all countries in africa, i want to beable to display the name of the country, and population in textboxes. then have a next button that will go to the next record.

LINQ Return Single Type Of Object Invalid Cast

Ok, just needing a 2nd set of eyes looking at this to make sure the error isn't something else other than my LINQ code here. Here's the function class itself:

Public Function GetJacketByPolicyID(ByVal jacketID As Int32) As tblPolicy
Dim db As New DEVDataContext()
Dim j As tblPolicy = db.tblPolicies.Single(Function(p) p.policyNumber = jacketID)
Return j
End Function

and here is the code which calls this class function in the web control form itself:

Dim j As New Jackets()
p = j.GetJacketByPolicyID(3000050)

For some reason it's flagging the 2nd line in the GetJacketByPolicyID function saying the specified cast is not valid. So I'm guessing it's something I'm doing wrong. I'm sure the tblPolicy/tblPolicies class works right since I can create a new instance of a tblPolicy and set a few variables by hand and return it, so that's not it. I've also checked the datarow I'm fetching and there's no null values in the record, so that shouldn't be it either.

Since I like to use the ReadAllBytes and WriteAllBytes methods to save my variables to disk, I have had no troubles thus far with Integers.It has been easy to convert a short integer into a string of two bytes to save them using WriteAllBytes as following example:-

An ObjectQuery can be enumberated only once. (Subsequent attempts at enumeration throw an exception.) The enumberation takes place in the for each statement. The problem is that if the query is empty attempting a For Each will throw an exception. But if I check for a count:If productQuery1.Count > 0 Then . . .

That eats up my one chance at enumeration. I could nest the For Each in a try/catch block and throw away the empty query exceptions, but that's ugly.

I have been searching the internet trying to understand in its simplist form why this behavior happens.

Dim mysingle As Single = 456.11 Dim mybool As Boolean = mysingle = 456.11

In the lines above mybool becomes false. I found this behavior when putting the single into a double I found extra digits showing. The .net documentations states a single is an approimate value I gatehr a single is a 32bit floating point number? But why are extra digits appearing when I have explicitly said what the number is.. surely the memory should store that numbers either side of my number are 0 to fill up the memory location?

I have a very large number of tables with data in the following format:

A X Y Z
1 0-2 0-13 0-1
2 3-5 14 2-4
3 6-9 15-16 5-10

In other words, there is a variable (call it A) with a single value that corresponds to a range of values in the other variables (call them X, Y, and Z).My program needs to accept user text input of values of X, Y, Z, etc. and then match each to the corresponding value of A.Example: User enters 4 in the X text box; program determines that if X=4, A=2.Again, we're talking about tables and tables of data in this format. Unaware of a better method, I have been using arrays.

Example:

Dim a() as double = {1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3,3...}
Dim x() as double = {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10...}

Note how I had to artificially deal with variable A so that the index of each score corresponds to the index of the matching X variable.It is this modification of the variables that is taking forever. There has to be a better way! Hypothetically, what I need is the ability to do something like this:

Dim a() as double = {1,2,3,4...}
dim x() as double = {0 to 2, 3 to 5, 6 to 9...}

Is there a way to represent a range of values at a single index of an array, such as my hypothetical example above? This would save me hours of re-shaping the data to make the arrays work.

Select Multiple Lines Then Push That Out To A Single Variable

I have a listview box. I load the listview up from a text file and everything is divided into three groups. I need to be able to select multiple lines then push that out to a single variable, separated by commas. Two things are happening that are problematic:

1) If I just have it set to smallicons and no checkboxes, anything I select is highlighted right up until the control loses focus at which point everything un-selects.

2) If I turn on checkboxes, I can click boxes and they stay selected when I lose focus BUT the checkboxes are cut off on the left side of the control. (The checkbox appears to go off the edge of the control.) There's plenty of space in the control for the checkbox and the listed items.
