We decided to use the registry for handling our deployment with connection strings in our VB.net application.
The requirements are:
If the program cannot connect to the server, first check the registry for a connection string. IF not, create the folder and fill in the name, type, and data. Make sure its encrypted.
I have never edited or created anything in the registry.

I'm rewriting a legacy application in .NET. In the earlier version, I used a few control .INI files that could be edited by the advanced user to provide variation in certain program options. (The program also permitted override of these same variabes via menus and such.) I used the API functions to read the .INI files and rewrite them to alter the user's environment for subsequent runs.

I'm having to store a user account locally on a machine, what would be the best method to store this? (Needs to be reversable encryption rather than hash)I'm accessing a UNC share as mentioned here: url...Can anyone suggest a better method or changes to the above to secure the credentials as much as possible?

other than GML (Yoyogames.com Game Maker Language), I am new to the coding world. The only "major" project I have completed using VB is a computer calculator that exactly mimics the capabilities of Windows 7's calculator. Yesterday, I began a Chatbot program for my girlfriend. Lol. I have used the instr() function to answer most of the questions or answers which are typed into the textbox1. I find this extremely troublesome because when using the instr() function you cannot say instr(textbox1.

Dim ash As String = "Ashley: "

I am trying to retrieve a 'tag'(Is it called that?) from an XML webpage. Once I make a post request from my vb.net app it sends a command to my online webserver and redirects me to a page that has entries that change each time. The page that im redirected to that changes each time looks something like this:
<mainpage> <id>hello</id> <random>176</random> </mainpage>
What vb.net code would I use to retrieve the id (In this case 'hello') and store it in a variable.

I have 13 variables, all called Items1, Items2, Items3 and so on. I have a combo box with items in, each time I click a button I want it so whatever is selected is stored in a variable and if the button is selected again then it stores whatever is selected in the next variable. I know all the code for selecting items in a combo box and transferring it to a variable but the problem I cannot do is the part where each time a button is clicked it stores whatever is selected in the combo box to the next variable.

I am working on moving applications from Windows 2000 to new server Windows 2003 R2(64 Bit). I noticed that there are some VB programs and config files for those programs have been placed in Windows 2000 Registry. Some other applications are using them from different servers.Why do we use registry here? How can i move these to registry in windows 2003? Can I just move these or do I have to write VB programs to place them in 2003 registry?

I'm writing a backup program for personal (for the moment at least) use.
For some directories (network directories / protected directories) credentials are needed to access them.
I can setup different jobs in the program to run at specific times.
These jobs are stored in an XML file.
I want to also store the usernames and passwords which the jobs will need.
What and where would be the best way to store these?
Changing permissions on the directories is not an option.

I have a done the following steps:
1. I took a decimal point number, suppose 192.123456
2. Then removed the decimal point
3. Concatenated the L.H.S and R.H.S and stored it in a string
4. The string that I got was 192132456
Problem: Now I want that the I should be able to reverse the string such that the string should become 5624132901. I have tried using the arrays but it gives me an error when I try storing a string into an array. I am pasting the code below:
NOTE: Code does not contain the implementation of arrays as discussed above. The logic below is without arrays.
Dim maindecimal_R_Reverse_Parts As String = ""
Dim mainbandnumber_R = CStr(MainBandText.Text)

I'm obtaining data from a StreamReader.My StreamReader is called "reader" and I'm reading the stream with "responseOutput" like this "responseOutput = reader.ReadToEnd()" And in that bunch of text that I receive I want to FIND and EXTRACT a piece of text and then STORE that extraction in a variable of String type.Here is part of the code I'm referring to:
Dim response = request.GetResponse
Dim responseOutput As String
Dim reader As StreamReader
reader = New StreamReader(response.GetResponseStream())
responseOutput = reader.ReadToEnd()
And here is the text or data that I'm receiving (what I'm about to show you is the result of a "MessageBox.Show(responseOutput)":
<TweetPhotoResponse xmlns="http://tweetphotoapi.com" xmlns:i="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"><Large>http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c54092/x2_7e143b</Large><MediaId>7e143b</MediaId><MediaUrl>http://tweetphoto.com/8262715</MediaUrl><Medium>http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c54102/x2_7e143b</Medium><Original>http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c61132/x2_7e143b</Original><PhotoId>8262715</PhotoId><SessionKeyResponse/><Status>OK</Status><Thumbnail>http://cdn.cloudfiles.mosso.com/c54112/x2_7e143b</Thumbnail><UserId>2268670</UserId></TweetPhotoResponse>
And all I want to do, is to extract a specific part of that text, which is the "PhotoId" value (I highlighted it in red), in this case the value is "8262715", and then store it in a variable (I know how to do that I just need the value).The text or data I'm receiving changes only the PhotoId everytime it's requested.

I am located in the NorthEast US. My problem is properly storing a string in European date format (today is 23/1/2012).
For example the string '12/1/2012' is stored as as December 1, 2012 not January 12, 2012.
How can I dimension a DateTime variable to store the European date string properly?

I have a listbox where the user can add items to it with the following schema "count, id".I want to take each item from the listbox,use the split function so I can "take" only the "count," part and then add the "count," part of each item into a string.I mean I want something like this:
user adds 3 items in the listbox:
1, 100
2, 200 and
3, 300.
I want to make it,so a string can be formed, and contain the "count," part of each item which in this case is;
in the first item the "count," part is "1,",in the second item the "count," part is "2," and in the third it's "3,".I want those "count," parts to be stored into a string (which will result into having this string "1,2,3,").

I'm currently grabbing HTML from my site using webrequest and storing it in a string. I'm looking to take this string, and scrape all of the prices in order to calculate this against my cost price (for a consistent profit spreadsheet). What is the most feasible way to do this? Would using a webbrowser control be a better idea?
