View 2 RepliesI was a VB6 programmer. And back in the day global variables, functions and subroutines were put in a module. The program started in the module using a sub named Main(). Now in vb2010 it looks like using sub Main() is possible only for console apps, which is not what I want, I'm still trying to write a windows app but it looks like everything has to go at the top of the starting form?? How is this good coding practice? Shouldn't public vars and functions be in their own module?What is considered best practice?Are there any links that would walk me through the differences between vb6 and vb2010?

I am developing an application where I need to make use of multiple values during the run time. These values are configuration setting of the application as specified by user and are stored in a database (more than 50 in number containing strings/boolean and numeric). I have defined a structure to contain all the variables that will store this information. At start of app, I retrieve all values from database and fill the structure which i can use when required. I am wondering if it is a good idea to declare too much of variables and keep them alive during the run-time as compared to retrieving the values from database every time it is required?

So pretty much its an order a customer will be making and every time a new order is placed, a new array will be made.
Example:

On submit a new array would be created and would be something like this:

BUT a new array has to be created each time the submit is clicked.
Is there a way to set session variables during login that are then available to reports? We have a reporting services server where we move and denormalize data from our transaction system for reporting purposes. In order to allow our users to login with the same user name and password from the transactional system we have set up custom forms authentication and after much trial and error it is finally working. In addition we have the authorization accessing our transactional system so that any changes in user authority is immediately reflected in Reporting Services.
Our problem now is that we would like to add some additional features such as locking down parameters depending on user authority/groups in our transactional system. We have found a way to do it but it's inefficient, basically we have stored procedures that will query our transactional system to check for access. The problem is that these queries will often be run for every report request even though the answer is unlikely to change. It would be nice to have access to session level data that can be set once during log in and then accessed from the reports.

Here I am getting userId and password but in this code I will get problem when after ? if userId and password starts wit capital letters and password maybe contain characters like "1&a"

View 3 RepliesI've run into an issue with Access Key in either Visual Basic or C#... also happens whether on my windows 7 64 but laptop or my Windows Vista 32 bit laptop - in Visual Studio 2010 professional... I create an Access Key (for example E&xit)... while the underline under the x shows up in the development area, it does NOT show up when I run the application NOR does it work... for example, press alt-x does not run the code associated with the exit (nor does a break into that code show it gets into that code).When I try it in a menu, it is a little different at first the underline under the access key does not show up but then after I access something by hand, it sometimes shows up and is usable.

For example : Some messagebox won't let users access the other application until the users hit the OK button.
I have some friends who are 'old-school' VB6 database developers and I was telling them about .NET and its features, specifically ADO.NET. In our conversation, they brought up the following reasons why they would rather stick with ADO than move to ADO.NET: The Dataset is disconnected (What if power fails?)

I have a windows forms app (32 bit) written in VB2010 which occassionally hangs in windows when minimised to the task bar You click on the icon on the taskbar and it will not come back up on the screen
No other modal forms are open in the application when the hang occurs Other programs respond OK
I ran Process Explorer against when it was Hung but do not know how to interpret the stack page, or even if it is helpful STack page with my application selected and Threads tab selected with CSwitch Delta column sorted descending. Then double clicking the top entry (my application .exe)
Note: This is running on an x64 machine, but also hangs on x32 machines

I have a routine [SPDataRecd(...)] that handles SerialPort1.DataReceived from a serial port (modem). When it is activated by a modem event, I want it to start the timer [DialogBoxTimer.Start()], but it doesn't work.If the timer is running, SPDataRecd can *stop* the timer [DialogBoxTimer.Stop()], but it can't start a stopped timer.

My main form has a list of friends, and I want to create a new chat window when they double click on one of those friends.
