Storing Process Objects In Variables?

View 2 RepliesI have a procedure (parent process) that starts several processes (child processes). The child processes calculate several array variables. How can I pass those arrays to the parent process? At the moment, the child processes write the arrays to a streambuilder and the parent process reads the stream. Is there a better way to do it? Is it possible to have the child processes write to RAM memory and have the parent process read from there? It is like declaring a global variable in the parent process and give the child processes access to it.
View 4 Replies writing a program which stores and uses information on oil pipelines. I have a number of worldwide sites, which each have a number of pipelines. Each pipeline has a number of segments, and each segment has a number of properties like flow rate, temperature, pressure etc. There are also going to be a number of cases, so the temperature of a segment in case 1 might be different to case 2.
What is the best way to set this up in terms of objects and references? Ive done a fair bit or reading about arrays, collections, classes and think there are a number of ways to skin this catFor example, if I wanted to reference the temperature in case 1, of segment 3, in pipeline 4, at worldwide site number 3, then can I do something with a load of objects and collections like the following?
site(3).pipeline(4).segment(3).case(1).temperature.value

point me to the best way to store persistant objects ( of my own class) in a vb application? I am putting together a simple family recipe application and have created a food item class. I would like to store the instances ( food items) indefinately so that they are there each time I start the program complete with all properties and meethods
View 14 RepliesI'm trying to get a complete understanding of Objects . Namespaces etc and think I'm pretty close.I've created A basic Vehicles class and a car class that inherits Vehicle.Through user input I've created several cars and displayed the information in a listview.My question is what is the best way to store my cars (don't say garage!) so that if a user clicks on the associated entry on the list box that they can then alter that specific instance.
View 5 RepliesI have been tasked to create an application, for which the requirements may change over time.This application will be a data entry Windows application,of which multiple copies will be running.All data will be written to text (.CSV) files for validation before being uploaded to a remote mainframe system (iSeries).My application needs to store certain variable information in an external text (or XML) file; for example, the file path to shared resources (which may change over time),as well as the specific data fields required by the mainframe system.
My questionsare these: what is considered the best practice for accomplishing such a task, and how would I accomplish it?I am completely new to XML, so I don't even know where to begin, although I am sure that XML is the path to follow for what I am trying to accomplish.
I am developing an application where I need to make use of multiple values during the run time. These values are configuration setting of the application as specified by user and are stored in a database (more than 50 in number containing strings/boolean and numeric). I have defined a structure to contain all the variables that will store this information. At start of app, I retrieve all values from database and fill the structure which i can use when required. I am wondering if it is a good idea to declare too much of variables and keep them alive during the run-time as compared to retrieving the values from database every time it is required?
View 4 RepliesSI have a form and on submit I need the following variables stored in array.
Dim OrderName, OrderNumber, OrderSize, OrderQuantity, OrderAddOn, OrderEachPrice, OrderTotal As String
So pretty much its an order a customer will be making and every time a new order is placed, a new array will be made.
Example:
OrderName = TextBox1.Text was Sean
OrderNumber = TextBox2.Text was 123456
OrderSize = TextBox3.Text was Large
OrderQuantity = TextBox4.Text was 2
OrderAddOn = TextBox5.Text was Pocket
OrderEachPrice = TextBox6.Text was 10
OrderTotal = TextBox7.Text was 20.00
On submit a new array would be created and would be something like this:
Dim ArrayName(,) As String = {{"Sean", "123456", "Large", "2", "Pocket", "10", "20.00"}}
BUT a new array has to be created each time the submit is clicked.
Is there a way to set session variables during login that are then available to reports? We have a reporting services server where we move and denormalize data from our transaction system for reporting purposes. In order to allow our users to login with the same user name and password from the transactional system we have set up custom forms authentication and after much trial and error it is finally working. In addition we have the authorization accessing our transactional system so that any changes in user authority is immediately reflected in Reporting Services.
Our problem now is that we would like to add some additional features such as locking down parameters depending on user authority/groups in our transactional system. We have found a way to do it but it's inefficient, basically we have stored procedures that will query our transactional system to check for access. The problem is that these queries will often be run for every report request even though the answer is unlikely to change. It would be nice to have access to session level data that can be set once during log in and then accessed from the reports.
I have this string
mainString="/MyApp/ViewPage.aspx?userId=admin&password=1&id=975"
I am getting value in mainString using this code
Dim mainString As String = Request.QueryString("dest")
And I have two sting variables
1)strTempUsername
2)strTempPassword
In these variables I want to store userId and password values from mainString.
So for this requirement how I write logic in code
Dim arrArray() As String
'/MyApp/ViewPage.aspx?userId=admin&password=1&id=975"
strIndexq = mainString.IndexOf("?") ' Check QuestionMark Exist or not in mainString
If strIndexq > 0 Then
Dim strTemp As String
[Code] .....
Here I am getting userId and password but in this code I will get problem when after ? if userId and password starts wit capital letters and password maybe contain characters like "1&a"
And after getting userid and password. I want to remove userid and password from mainstring. So I want mainstring look like:
"/MyApp/ViewPage.aspx?id=975"
I've got a dictionary<string,string> that I need to access and use on several windows forms. In asp.net, I could store it in Session and use it from any aspx page. How would I do this in forms?

when using variables in object names.I have a Public class which is called "Tank".In that class, there is a public property called "direction" of an integer type.I keep getting the error:

I have a small class of Object CellValue
Friend Class CellValue
Public CellColor As Color = Color.White
Public CellShape As Shape = Shape.Blank
Public CellName As String = ""
End Class
Then in my main I make an array of CellValue but I want to know if the values are also being passed down with the array.
Dim Plan(SizeW - 1, SizeH - 1) As CellValue
Dim CellW As Integer = PictureBox1.Width \ SizeW
Dim CellH As Integer = PictureBox1.Height \ SizeH
[Code].....
Are CellName, CellShape and CellColor being tied to each element in the array?. The reason is because I need to use these properties to tie certain functions to them. The CellName should have a MachineID which I would have to use to pull some info from a Database.
The Array should also be serialized and deserialized to XML as customer needs to create/edit and delete certain values in the array. And in order to save the array has to be in XML
So the Questions are does it save the CellName, CellShape and CellColor for each element, will it be affected if I serialize and deserialize using XML. If possible, how can I call up the Cellname p.e for a specific array element.
What I need to do is create comboboxes populated with values from a CSV for each class object selected from an Active Directory schema.
So lets say twelve classes are selected, the next form will display the class names in a checkedlistbox and will require twelve comboboxes for associating AD classes to CSV fields. Since the number of AD classes selected will always vary, is there a practical way to code it so that the objects can be instantiated from values stored in a variable?
Other languages support macro substitution, where the variable's value is interpreted as a literal at runtime. Developing in Visual Studio 2005, VB version 8 .netFramework 2.0xxx
I have a (in my eyes) complicated issue. I need to process a Word document and print it with an ASP.NET application. There will be certain variables in the document. We would like to indicate these between brackets, i.e. {name}.
Is it possible to fill up these variables before printing? In what direction should I look?
In re-engineering a windows forms application, I find that a lot of code-behind in the various form classes is duplicative and I'm trying to centralize as many procedures as possible into a base class which can be inherited and used by the subclassed forms.
This process seems to be going well and is making the code in my subclasses much simpler and hopefully easier to maintain, but I'm not sure where to draw the line between leaving code in the subclasses and engineering for generic resusability and moving it to the base class.
Specifically, in some subclasses I have code which manipulates variables and objects specific to the subclass, and although I could move the code-behind into the base class, the base class code references specific objects which are needed to compile. For example, each subclass manipulates a databound datagridview and form detail controls which allows the user to select between multi-record and detailed single-record views of a datatable.
In Visual Basic 2008 do I need to declare dummy data objects in the base class so that the base class will compile? Or is there a way to indicate that the data objects will be provided by the subclass?
I have a Public Sub I am using to enumerate running processes and then display them in a ListView.I want to be able to update the list automatically each second. I've thought of doing this in two different ways, but the method that I want to use is checking if the process has exited or not.
When reading up on the Process Properties, I ran into .HasExited and .Refresh.I thought that I could use a timer and have it tick at 1 second intervals. I would then check, each second, if the Process has exited. If it has, remove it from the list.The problem with this, is that I don't want to put the sub in the timer because it would just constantly flicker the control. I need to figure out a way to access the variables inside of the Sub while inside of the Timer's .Tick event.The other issue is being able to add processes that aren't there. Which I can within another sub. I was thinking I could create a sub that grabbed the Processes by ID, compare them to the list, and them add them if they aren't there. If I did this, I could also remove Processes by ID that aren't in the list.
I have written a windows service that is meant to launch a notepad when a specific action happens. The problem i have is that even though the service launches notepad, the actual notepad it self is NOT visible. I know that it has been launced because i can see the process in the task manager. By the way the process is listed as a SYSTEM process rather than a process under my user name (i believe that is because my process is a "LocalSystem" one).

Last year (2010) I came across a FANTASTIC command that allowed me to take a string of variables with a common delimiter and break it all back out into separate variables (possibly an array) with one statement.
[Code]...
As long as the delimiter was a unique specifiable character, this one-statement command could break it out into elements. my memory and point me in the right direction.
I have noticed that I can access my variables, objects and so forth either using "Me" or not using "Me".
Is it good practice to always use "Me"?
Does it make a difference?
I have code, shown below, that works all except for 1 thing: The variables being passed byRef get passed, but once modified in the else section of the "if me.invokerequired" code of RecordData, the variables are never updated in the calling function. To reiterate, the calling function does not receive the updated data that is in the variables custid and amt.When debugging, I see the data change in the else section of "if me.invokerequired", but once it returns from the callback the data is missing.[code]
View 15 RepliesI define some global variables of a class as follows:
Private Class MyClass
Private var1 as Decimal
Private list1 as List(Of string)[code].....
But I found that after this form is closed, all above variables, var1, list1, list2 still exist in memory. I thought they should be collected by gc since the form is already disposed as I confirmed.
Add: I have monitored half an hour after the form is closed. But these variables are not collected by gc. I have an automatic update procedure on the form which uses above variables.Since the above variables still hold values, the automatic update procedure is always called which causes exception. (One quick fix is to check if form.isDisposed in update procedure. But I do not think this is elegeant. Besides, these variables occupy memory.)
long story short, I have created a ListView type control, using UserControls for the parent control and the ListViewItems. Most the of the control is written and works fine, right up to the point where I tried to replicate the 'Control.SelectedItems(0).Index' property and the 'SelectedIndexChanged' event.
Each child object knows its index value, and could pass this value via the SelectedIndexChanged event (assuming this is how it works in a normal ListView control -- user clicks on an item, and that item fires an event updating the selected index value in the parent object).
How does the child object raise an event in the parent object? I have a feeling this could be done with Delegates, but I'm still learning about their usage.
