Trigger Program Action During Windows Shutdown?
Feb 10, 2009
I am designing a program that will show a reminder form when the computer is shutting down. (The reminder is to go outside and get the Bluetooth gps aerial.) I have tried using the formclosing event, (triggered by windows shutting down) to flash the form up on the screen using windowstate = normal. (At loading, the form windowstate = minimised). This did not halt windows shut down and the form was only on the screen for a fraction of a second before windows shut down. Can I trap windows shutdown until the form btn_Yes has been selected?
I think this msdn library article is talking about this. [URL]
I have looked at the enumprocess api, but this is quite a bit outside my current knowledge level. From what I have read, enumprocess would be suitable as we all run the same program on our laptops and I could check for the change of state of that program. Eg. OK, program A is closing, the computer must be about to shutdown, so flash up the reminder form.

I am attempting to send the PrintScreen key, obviously, which ought to work no matter the window it is focused on. How can I make this trigger the printscreen action like it normally would? This is in VB.net. I have googled this, and couldn't find any results that worked.

I'm working on a web browser named Hyvar.NET and i'd like to integrate a form of shutdown detection into it.
Currently, it simply uses a tri-option setting to decide how it opens - like this
If My.Settings.LoadLastOnStart = True Then
frm.wbTab.Navigate(My.Settings.LastOpenedPage.ToString)
ElseIf My.Settings.HomeOnStart = True Then
[Code]....
Each variable is appropriately named for its job as you can see.
However, i want to change this to react to correct and incorrect shutdowns - unexpected and user instigated ones for example. I.E: if the settings variable for the detection contained 0x000000, it could indicate a clean exit and continue as normal with a new session, but 0x000001 would indicate an unclean shutdown and present the user with an option of reopening the last session or continueing as normal, like in IE 7/8
Im 100% sure this will require a windows API call

My main Application A starts a 3rd party Application B that runs as a console application. So I don't have access to the Application B source code. When specific things happen in Application A, I can properly launch a vb.net Application C that I built, which properly shuts down Application B, by sending a Ctrl-C signal to it, the same as hitting Ctrl-C in a console window. But I cannot have this occur on Windows shutdown because Application B shuts down on its own before I even have the chance to launch Application C to shut it down. Is there a way to keep some kind of control over Application B when I launch it, or any way to have it be last in the shut down of programs in Windows?

But it doesn't seem to work, Windows shuts down yes but when I re-start the vm and run the app it opens with the old settings, not the ones that I changed before I shut down the vm. Anyone know of a way to do this or to fix the code above, I don't think my OnShuttingdown event is being handled.

I made a little VB app to shutdown a laptop after it has been powered on for 2 1/2 hours, and giving the user a little over 8min warning that it is about to be shutdown. However I have nothing in place to stop the user from restarting the device once it is shutdown. What I would like to integrate in this, is a sort of memory where if the user doesn't wait at least 30 minutes, the shutdwon will re-iniate immediatly.
I included the code I did so far.
Public Class Form1
Private Declare Sub Sleep Lib "kernel32" (ByVal dwmilliseconds As Long)
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
[Code].....

Alright im trying to make it where in Visual Basic 2008 you click on a box ether 10, 20, or 30. Then that tells a timer that the program needs to turn off in 10, 20, or 30 minutes. What I basically want it to do is, whenever the set amount time is when it goes off it shows form1(login form). I have prepared a picture can anyone supply me with some information on how to do this?

Now I am trying to get it to trigger an event.I put a message box in the timer section just to experiment with getting it to pop up and it does work when I run it within vb but when I deploy it as a service it no longer pops up.

I have a main form that has a dynamically generated treeview and also a panel control. Depending on the selection made within the treeview the panel docks 1 of three diffrent usercontrols which are full sub forms(done for ease of modifing design of sub form rather than layering panels on top of panels).Upon button click withing usercontrol i wish to trigger event within main form. For example delete button wich then triggers to remove current selected node from treeview. code for 1 of three diffrent user controls
Dim ctrlQ As New QuoteUC(TrViewQuotation.SelectedNode)
PnlSubFormDock1.Controls.Add(ctrlQ)
Code for delete button for which i need to raise event.
If MsgBox("Are you sure you wish to delete this customer ?", vbYesNo, "Delete Record") = vbYes Then
Deletecustomer(n)
End If

i have to develop a software for motorola mc9090 that reads barcodes and rfids simultaneously, so i need to catch two different triggers: the one on the keyboard for barcodes and the other in the backside for rfids.the problem is that i didn't find any sample that illustrates how to set the trigger to read only barcodes, i found something on emdk 2.5 samples that shows how to set the trigger to read rfids but nothing for barcodes. So when i press any trigger the barcode reader is always enabled with rfids reader.Does exist a way to manage them with separated triggers?

In my work, we have a program done by other company, and we don't have the code to change it. This program register a serie of numbers and then if the user whants, save them to an xml file. But if the user forget to save and close the program, it doens't ask if whant to save the data, it simply close and all data is lost. I whant to know if its possible to build a vb.net application that controls when the close button is press and freeze the program or something to remind the user to save the data.

I need to install a windows service via an .msi for many tablets which is nooooo problem. The problem is, the tablets currently have the service running which was installed by installutil. So when my installer runs, regardless of Remove Previous Version is true, it stops stating the service already exists and to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. So I wrote a console app which preceeds the primary output as follows:
Sub Main()
Try
Dim filename As String = "C:Program FilesRSCProjectServiceSetupRSCProjectService.exe"
'Dim filename As String = "C:RSCProjectServiceRSCProjectServiceinDebugRSCProjectService.exe"

a datacontext defined in a module(domain services ado.net ria)a page having add/delete methods whenever any method is executed, it is found that all the previous actions (NEW RECORD ADDITION and DELETION OF RECORDS) are carried out before the new action is carried out normally
this behaviour is not prominent but "when using break points and inspecting the values of the variables and table object to be added to context, it is clear that all the previous actions take place again. even when the datacotext. savechanges is called, even after that still all actions carried out on the datacontext repeat themseleves, when any new action is to be carried out

I'm attempting to convert VB 5.0 source code to VB 2008. The converted code will then be slightly altered to facilitate its incorporation into a larger project that I'm developing in VB 2008. After using the conversion wizard (which is actually written for VB 6.0), I have 49 unresolved issues -- less than I expected. Much has changed since the days of my prowess as a programmer (Fortran in the 70's), so working my way through even as few as 49 issues will be a challenge, and will (no doubt) take me a while.
The UI for the VB 5.0 code I'm converting is a "virtual remote," with control buttons that (when clicked) trigger communication to a USB-connected device. With assistance, I've been able to develop my own "virtual remote," contained within my VB 2008 project. Eventually, I will "substitute" mine for the original. For now, though, I'm wanting to use MY "virtual remote" to trigger the original.
I have the executable for the VB 5.0 program, and can run it simultaneously with my "under-development" VB 2008 code. Problem is: I don't know how to cause a "click" on MY virtual remote to trigger a click on the original virtual remote (which is being "monitored" by the other program).

I've designed an Order Entry System and now I'd like to send an email when an Order has been saved to the Database. I could probably do it from the client machine pretty well, but really what I was looking for was to inform another program running on the server that an Order has been saved into the database with OrderID:xyz. And have that program take care of sending the email. I have no problem designing this second program, in terms of the basics of responding to an event and sending an email. But my question is: how do I raise an event across the network that this other program will respond to?

I'm new to VB and Windows programming but I do have a fair amount of experience programming at the command line level. A friend is having problems with his laptop. He does a lot of speaking engagements with Powerpoint. His laptop uses the F7 key to toggle the output to his external monitor port to the video projector. The F7 key has stopped doing this. Is there a way to create a Windows program that will do this without using a DOS window? He is not familiar with command line processing and needs something that he can double-click.
