View 35 RepliesI have a web browser with tabs, and I wanted to know the following:
1. When yougo to a webpage the Tab name will be the websites title, if the title is over
2 5 characters, then it ends with a "..."
2. how do I make the adress bar URL change when switching tabs?
I was wondering if there was a solution to replacing the tab control's tabs with custom tabs made in Photoshop. I know there are plenty of super expensive programs that can do it, but I was wondering if there was a way to do it programmatically. I was thinking that maybe it could linked in some way with a .DLL?
View 1 RepliesMy code is basically a file parser/editor and it handles most files fine as they hold a handful of records concerning family members. However there are a few files that crash when trying to deal with them. Here is the problem. Each family member record creates 3 tabs that hold an average of 3 group boxes each. Each group box holds an average of 3 text boxes. So each member record creates 3x3x3 = 27 text boxes and some files get up to 289 family members which = 7803 text boxes.
The problem is the rare file with 400+ member records = 10,800 text boxes which causes a crash due to using up all the window handles. Each member has a separate tab page (with 3 subpages) but really only a dozen or so member pages are visible in the GUI with scroll arrows to move through them so I was thinking of somehow making the GUI a scrollable window so the tabs get built, displayed and disposed as the user scrolls left and right through the member tabs.
The files are parsed into a 3d list DataList(x,y,z) where x is the page number, y is the group box number and z is the text box number. So all the data is available. The code then traverses MyList and builds GuiList(x,y) where x is the page number and y is the groupbox number with all the textbox.text linked to MyList(x,y,z) locations so all text changes are reflected in the MyList.
I already have a memberCount variable and I am thinking of building, say, the first 30 member tabs with the middle 10 being visible in the GUI. If the selected tab > 20, then dispose of the first 10 tabs and create tabs 30-40.I am thinking I will keep all the member tab pages so I don't have to deal with inserts and indexing problems but just dispose all the group boxes and text boxes for tab pages out of view. I already have a deep clone sub that clones members when the user wants to add a new family member and I am thinking I will have to add something similar when a tabpage is passed in for disposal, it traverses and disposes each text box, then disposes the group box for each group box on the tab page.Additionally, another routine will rebuild the group boxes from the data held in MyList(x,y,z) when a tabpage(x) is passed in.
I came across this Switching from VB.NET to C#?I would be moving from C# to VB.Net. To be more precise, I would be moving from C# 3.0 to VB 10.0 (.Net 3.5 to .Net 4.0). I am initially planning to use a C# to VB converter to cope up with the syntax.

I have a webpage with a form that is used to edit some object. This object contains a Collection of other objects defined like this: Public Overridable Property Employees As List(Of Employee)
On a form I can delete an employee, add a new one or modify existing one. When I click save new values are sent to the server. On a server I check if the user exists. If exists then I modify its values, if it does not exist then I add it. All employees that exist on the server and were not sent are marked as deleted (State changed to EntityState.Deleted). I try to use the following code (dbCollection = database entities, newCollection = collection sent from the form):
[Code]...
This code does not work, because changing to EntityState.Deleted removes the object from collection, and for each loop breaks, since the collection is modified...I know that I can overcome this problem by using a for loop or adding objects to delete to some other list first, but I hope maybe there is a pattern that would make my code nicer.
I have some forms in my application and need to switch between them. I dont want to open another form over other form, in short I want the user to get a feel that he is working on one form only. Right now I am doing something like this but this is not what I want

In my project, I want the abiliity to switch between forms without closing them. What is the best way to do this? I have a "Login Splash Form" that you sign into, and then a Main Menu Form opens in Full Screen. I want this form always to stay open with the ability to open up other forms from this main menu screen as needed.
View 3 RepliesI have 2 listbox's, same locations/sizes (one behind the other). I have 2 buttons, and they just switch the views between the listbox's by changing their visibility propertyThe problem is listbox1, which gets populated first, displays just fine. No code in the program touches listbox2, except for 1 button that adds items. When switching to listbox2 to see the added items, the items are there (verified by debugging and hovering over the added variable), but the text that is displayed won't update. The text that is displayed is the text from listbox1.

View 1 RepliesHaving had to replace my old computer, one can virtually only get 64 bit Win7 in UK.All my old Visual Studio 2008 + other components installed OK but when I tried to build and run a prgramme that still runs happily on the old machine, I get the following error message
System.TypeInitializationException was unhandled
Message=The type initializer for 'mydata.Colin' threw an exception.

The programme is called mydata and Colin is my User name. Anybody got any idea what is wrong and how to correct it. I have tried to run it in Visual Basic 2010 Express and get the same error.
Hopefully VB2012 will have Gigs of error messages that mere mortals can understand!
I have an application I wrote that is in VB.NET 2.0. Works great, but I'd like to switch this application to Linq. I use ADO.NET to load XML into a datatable. The XML file has about 90,000 records in it. I then use the Datatable.Select to perform searches against that Datatable. The search control is a free form textbox. So if the user types in terms it searches instantly. Any further terms that are typed in continue to restrict the results. So you can type in Bob, or type in Bob Barker. Or type in Bob Barker Price is Right. The more criteria typed in the more narrowed your result. I bind the results to a gridview.
1) Go to Project Properties --> Advanced Compiler Settings and change the Target framework to 3.5 from 2.0.
2) Add the reference to System.XML.Linq, Add the Imports statement to the classes.
So I'm not sure what the best approach is going forward after that. I assume I use XDocument.Load, then my search subroutine runs against the XDocument. Do I just do the standard Linq query for this sort of repeated search? Like so:
Dim people =
from phonebook in doc.Root.Elements("phonebook")
where phonebook.Element("userid") = "whatever"
select phonebook
trying to get my first windows form running with controls. I havent been able to figure anything out. . . and then i realized duh, it's all in VB. How do I switch the generated files to C#? Am I confused? This is what I'm getting when I try to add my first control for Button_Start:

I'm starting to play around some with VB2008.
In VB6, I would write something like this:
rs.open("SELECT * FROM Contacts", cn1)
strFirstName = rs!FirstName
In VB2008, line 2 does not work. How do get to the fields in the recordset?
I am currently writing a program and I have all the windows in three languages. Is there any way of quickly changing through the languages? I mean, I can do it manually but the list has like 500+ languages and I was wondering if there was any keyboard shortcut to switch between the used languages, or any way to put a buttom on the toolbar.

View 2 RepliesI am working on a website web site where each user has a culture setting to allow control of resources displayed. The main page has two views, one the log on screen, the second the main menu.
When first loaded the page displays with the culture settings of the previous user (if any). If I then log on as a user with a different culture setting the view changes to the main menu without changing the culture. Go to another page and the user's correct culture settings are picked up, go back to the main menu, uses the correct culture etc.
This is logical but is there a way (without redesigning the site to have a separate log in page and main menu) to reset the culture to the new user's when switching view?
