Switching Selected Row In A Database

Nov 21, 2009

I'm writing a flash cards program to help myself and others study. When the user presses the "New Card" button, I've been able to make it create the new card and jump to edit it, but the dataset/binding source/table adapter is not switching with it, so when you deselect the text box, it switches back to whatever was selected before the new card was made.[code]

SPat = EyeBaseDataSetSQL.DEMOGRAPHICS.Patient_NumberColumn.Ordinal

Switching Database Dynamically - MySettings.Connection

Oct 20, 2011

I have a connectionstring in MySettings which all my datasets use. The project has three copies of the same database: LIVE, WHATIF and TEST. I need to have a dialog in my startup that asks the user which db they want to use and then I thought I could amend MySettings.Connection string dynamically. Hey-ho it's read-only! Is there any other approach I can use where I change a connection string once and all my datasets will then point to the selected db?

Created An Access Database - Display Items In The Database Base On The Criteria Selected By The User

May 29, 2009

I have created an access database which i want to search with vb.net, I tried a few thing but it didnt work as desired.

Firstly the program is suppose to display items in the database base on the criteria selected by the user. what i've succefssfully done so far is I've added a datagrid 2 combobox, 1 (searchcbo) with the columns in the database and the other (searchcbo1) will autoload the items under the column selected in and a button (searchbtn) but i have no clue of the code to put in the button. i also tried the fill method but that didnt work as i wanted to. ultimately i want a combobox with the list of columns and a textbox to enter criteria and of course a search button.

The searchbtn should act as the "WHERE" sql command, e.g. SELECT EmployeeNumber, Firstname, LastName, Phone, Location....etc FROM CallLog WHERE searchcbo.text = searchcbo1.text And display the results in the datagrid.

Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
'TODO: This line of code loads data into the 'CallLogDataSet.CallLog' table. You can move, or remove it, as needed.
Me.CallLogTableAdapter.Fill(Me.CallLogDataSet.CallLog)

Switching Between Listbox's?

Jul 18, 2010

I have 2 listbox's, same locations/sizes (one behind the other). I have 2 buttons, and they just switch the views between the listbox's by changing their visibility propertyThe problem is listbox1, which gets populated first, displays just fine. No code in the program touches listbox2, except for 1 button that adds items. When switching to listbox2 to see the added items, the items are there (verified by debugging and hovering over the added variable), but the text that is displayed won't update. The text that is displayed is the text from listbox1.

Switching From 32 To 64 Bit Windows 7?

Sep 6, 2010

Having had to replace my old computer, one can virtually only get 64 bit Win7 in UK.All my old Visual Studio 2008 + other components installed OK but when I tried to build and run a prgramme that still runs happily on the old machine, I get the following error message

System.TypeInitializationException was unhandled
Message=The type initializer for 'mydata.Colin' threw an exception.
Source=mydata
TypeName=mydata.Colin
StackTrace:

[Code]...

The programme is called mydata and Colin is my User name. Anybody got any idea what is wrong and how to correct it. I have tried to run it in Visual Basic 2010 Express and get the same error.

Hopefully VB2012 will have Gigs of error messages that mere mortals can understand!

Switching From ADO.NET To LINQ?

Mar 15, 2010

I have an application I wrote that is in VB.NET 2.0. Works great, but I'd like to switch this application to Linq. I use ADO.NET to load XML into a datatable. The XML file has about 90,000 records in it. I then use the Datatable.Select to perform searches against that Datatable. The search control is a free form textbox. So if the user types in terms it searches instantly. Any further terms that are typed in continue to restrict the results. So you can type in Bob, or type in Bob Barker. Or type in Bob Barker Price is Right. The more criteria typed in the more narrowed your result. I bind the results to a gridview.

1) Go to Project Properties --> Advanced Compiler Settings and change the Target framework to 3.5 from 2.0.

2) Add the reference to System.XML.Linq, Add the Imports statement to the classes.

So I'm not sure what the best approach is going forward after that. I assume I use XDocument.Load, then my search subroutine runs against the XDocument. Do I just do the standard Linq query for this sort of repeated search? Like so:

Dim people =
from phonebook in doc.Root.Elements("phonebook")
where phonebook.Element("userid") = "whatever"
select phonebook

Asp.net - If No Value Selected From Dropdown, Allow Textbox To Add To Database?

Sep 26, 2011

I have a dropdown list that will add new titles to my database, however I would like to add a textbox that will allow the user to type in a new title if there is nothing in the dropdown that makes any sense for what they are trying to add.

I have the dropdown dynamically getting titles from the database. Unfortunately, this means that the first value in the dropdown list is not a default that says "Select an option." I don't know how to get the dropdown to have the first option listed as "Select" when the values are being pulled from the database. I can't add Select an option to the database so how would this even work?

What can I add to my codebehind that will allow the textbox to insert into the database if the dropdown list is not inserting anything? Right now I don't have any codebehind for the textbox but I do have the dropdown list inserting the correct information.

<li class="alternatingItem">
<asp:LinkButton ID="DescButton" runat="server">Description</asp:LinkButton>
<asp:Panel ID="DescPanel" runat="server" CssClass="modalPopup" Style="display:none">
<div class="PopupHeader">Add a Description</div>

Database Is Selected And Displayed In A DataGridView?

May 11, 2009

I am using a DateTimePicker to allow the user to select dates between which, info from a database is selected and displayed in a DataGridView.This works fine exept that the dates selected by the DateTimePicker seem to bring back results in US date format!

If I do a debug.print (DateTime1.text), the date is in UK format i.e 11/05/2009 but when these variables are used in a Select statement, the dates returned seem to be in US format e.g. selecting dates between 01/04/2009 and 7/05/2009 selects dates between 04/01/2009 and 05/07/2009 when the results are displayed in the DataGridView!

Switching Between SQL 2008 And SQL 2000 In VB

Jun 18, 2009

I have written a VB 2008 Standard Edition program using a SQL 2008 Epress database in my development environment. When I point my program to the production SQL 2000 database it blows up. With the following error:

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual Studio
---------------------------
GentranDataSet.Document_tb.Fill,GetData () could not be previewed.

The text, ntext, and image data types cannot be compared or sorted, except when using IS NULL or LIKE operator.

---------------------------
OK Help
---------------------------

The tables are "exactly" the same in the two databases... I think.

I have done some reading and wonder if this could be a unicode and non-unicode issue. Is 2000 non-unicode and 2008 unicode?

Can I "refresh" my data enviroment without having to re-create all my data objects in my VB code?

Adding Tables After Database Selected As DataSource

Dec 8, 2011

I know this is a very basic question but it has been awhile since I created a project with a database( been using a lot of XML). I created a database then selected it as a data source added some controls to some forms. Then I realized I needed to adjust some tables and I needed to add a whole new table. I deleted the controls and updated the tables that needed some adjustment. Now I would like another table. Can I disassociate the data source and do my adjustment to the database?

Have I created a problem with the binding object since I just deleted the controls on the form. I have written classes and some logic or else I might just start over. I guess I could copy those files but I am wondering if there is an easy way to fix what I have started. I realize that there are alot of questions here so any resource on how to modify a database that is attached to a VB.Net project.

Delete A Row In DataGridView AND Database Deletes The Next Row After Last Selected Row

May 15, 2011

I try to do a very simple job which is: Delete a row in dgv AND database! But now after three days I'm running out of steam

The problem is: I select on or more rows in dgv and push the del button. The sub zDelete starts working and at the end the selected row is gone and the row after my selection is gone too!?!? The deletion of the selected row was well done in dgv and database. But why is the next row in dgv only also disappeared??? After a restart of the form the missing row is back up again. And when I try to delete the last row it trows an exception error: System.IndexOutOfRangeException was unhandled

The code fragment is this:

'Delete all selected rows in dgv AND database!
Private Sub zDelete()
If MessageBox.Show("Do you really want to delete the selected rows?", "Delete", MessageBoxButtons.YesNo) = DialogResult.Yes Then
