Use A .NET .DLL File Or Library In VB6?
Oct 27, 2010
I'm just wondering if there is something I should know of when doing this or will it work straight out of the bat as long as the .NET framework is installed on the client?
I ask because when I attempted this, VB6's references dialog said "cant register that dll"

I have written a vb.net class library that pulls the url for a web service out of my.settings. However, at runtime it no longer bothers to read the class.dll.config file that it made.I want to deploy this dll in different environments and be able to custom choose the relative webservice via the class.dll.config file.

Got a solution with 3 projects, a Web Service, a WinForms (MyUI), and a Class Library (Foo).
MyUI calls methods in the DLL that access the web service. The DLL has project config settings that store the URL of the web service. I compile the solution and it compiles all 3 projects. In the DLL's bin dir it puts the foo.dll and foo.dll.config files. However, in the WinForms bin dir it puts the MyUI.exe, MyUI.exe.config, and foo.dll; it doesn't include the foo.dll.config. When I run the MyUI.exe from its bin dir, it appears to work, and is obviously getting the config settings from somewhere because it doesn't crash and successfully contacts the web service. However, if I copy the foo.dll.config file into the MyUI's bin dir, and change config settings and re-run, it appears to ignore my changes completely.
In the Class Library I setup the config settings through the project properties dialog under the Settings tab. I access them from code using My.Settings.
How do I modify the config settings post-compile?

I have a Class Library project with a appSettings.config file included into the project. The file is not embedded. So I have a ClassLibrary.dll with a appSettings.config beside in the bin.I have another project which is a Web Service. It has a reference on ClassLibrary.dll with a Copy Local=true. When I build the Web Service, the ClassLibrary.dll is brought into the bin of the Web Service. However, the .config doesn't follow.Do I need to do some postbuild event to copy the .config file or there is another setting I can set?

Added for my quick reference.When you use the following code to retrieve the values from config file in a library project.
Value = Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("KeyName")
The application will look for this key in AppSettings section of calling assembly and may lead to unpredictable results.

I want to upload a file to a sharepoint document library. This looks extremely easy and trivial but I haven't written any VB in about 10 years, so it's kicking my strASS I have tried looking into using the web services for this, but all of the solutions posted are incomplete, so I've punted and gone after the http put methods. I found this vbscript which works very well, tested on files up to 23MB and it works great.

I am trying to open an Excel file using the following commands:
xlsWB = xlsApp.Workbooks.Open(filename, , True)
where 'filename' is the name of the file.However I am getting the following error message:
Message = "Old format or invalid type library. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80028018 (TYPE_E_INVDATAREAD))"
I originally developed an application where I used the above code with default language setting of "English" (under regional and language settings). When I am changing the language setting to "French", the above errror comes up. I am changing the language setting to French in order to simulate an error when this application is run in a French version computer.

I am currently developing a service using the SharePoint 2010 Client Object Model to programmatically upload Excel worksheets to a Drop Off Library and then set the properties on the file. This process is working well. However, the Drop Off Library is governed by Content Organizer Rules that aren't being applied to the uploaded file. I have examined every property I thought I could have missed: [code] What's most frustrating is that if I edit the document properties using the Web UI and check it back in without making any changes, the file is moved to its final location. What might I have overlooked that is preventing Content Organizer Rules from being applied to newly uploaded files when using SP2010 COM?

I'm trying to upgrade a VB6 app to VB 2008. I have read the article in the tutors corner about automating Excel from VB but I cannot get it to work. Heres what I have done:
1) set a reference to the Microsoft Excel 12.0 Object Library
2) Added "Imports Excel = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel" to the top of the module
3) in a routine I have added: Dim X As New Excel.Application Here's where I get an error: Error 75 'Application' is ambiguous in the namespace 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel'.

I have a project that has a need to display a Excel file in second window, but because other controls are needed, simply launching excel is not sufficient. Right now I do not know if the target machines have excel installed but I know with certainty that if they do it would be 2010, is there any method or library that allows you frame your own form around an excel window?

I have two projects; A and B, where B needs to use some classes that are in project A. Hence, I added B to A's solution, and in B I added a reference to project A.
Is that sensible? Or should I rather put those classes in a class library?
I see that if I further want to open form/program B from a menu option in project A, then A needs a reference to B. Which would not be possible if B already had a reference to A. However if I use the class library for the common classes, then it's ok as B doesn't need the A reference.
Does this sound logical? It would be nice to know what are typical reasons for putting projects in the same solution, and if it's advised to use libraries aggressively to refactor common code between two projects, even if it's just a couple of classes.. Yet I've never made my own library, so a bit unsure on when to use it.

I was looking at tutorial that was detailing how to Build a Class Library Component and Consumer Client Application. One of the steps involved was how to add a reference to a library. Am I right in assuming that the reason for adding a reference is to show Vb where class library is located. I would also like to know if it is possible to add the reference within the code. In the tutorial the reference was added via the top menu (selecting project and add reference).

I am running through an issue for which I am unable to find a solution.My goal is to:1- compile a x64 .NET library (vb) which has a simple User Control 2- Use this dll in a .NET WinForm application targeted to x64 CPU ONLY.
I have been able to do the first step, but now I am unable to add the library into the VisualStudio Toolbox. With our previous x86 version we had just to right click to VS toolbox, click on "Choose items...", then brows to the needed x86 assembly. If we do the same selecting a x64 lib (of course I am running vs on a 64 bit OS), we get the following message "[DLL PATH] is not a Microsoft .NET module."

I have decided that I want to learn a bit about sound and how it works so I thought that I would make an application that reads and plays MP3 files. I know that this will be very difficult and that I will be re-inventing the wheel, but it's all for the educational purpose. So my questions are; How does it work, how does Windows Media Player plays the data from the MP3 file? How can I, with the data provided in the MP3 file, know what to play, how it should sound? Which method would I have to approach to play the sound provided in the file? If you think that I have too little knowledge on the subject

I have created a library which generates a .DLL file that I include in some of my projects. Now my question is that I have 2 databases, a development and a production one. I want to give the user using the .DLL file to have the ability to select which database they want to query. How can I achieve that?
The way I know how to do it will require them to manually select the database EVERY TIME they call a function..
