I have a program based in Visual Basic 2010. I want to use a custom keyword and AES encryption to generate registration keys on our company website, that will unlock the software regardless of whether or not the software is connected to the internet.

I am aware of the many cryptography providers that are available in the .NET framework along with the basics of how to use them. This is simple enough.
But my concern is this.Lets say I want to use these libraries to encrypt XML serialized objects to prevent tampering and the ability of anyone to come along and view the contents of these files.
The problem that I am always left with is that the key to decrypt this data would need to be stored as a constant somewhere in my application. Essentially rendering the entire exercise pointless.
So, how does one store a key for an encryption algorithm securely inside of a disassemblable application?
EDIT: So If I am understanding both answers below correctly. What this means is that essentially any implementation (to be secure) requires it to be readonly or writeonly but never both? Is this correct?
I'm looking for a basic way to generate keys and have the application verify that it is a correct key.

RSA algorithm only limited by using a class provided by the .net ie System.Security.Cryptography.RSACryptoServiceProvider Class. I would like to generate a tracking number as primary key for my database.
There will be total 12 letters for each tracking id. Example: 2012010001-1
The "2012010001-1" is actually from combination YYYYMMxxxx-v where YYYY is the current year, MM is the current month, xxxx is the auto generate number(increment) and -v is the version where it can be -2 -3 but using the same YYYYMMxxxx.
For both YYYYMM is not a prob as i can get the value from Date.Today.Month/Date.Today.Year. But how am I going to ensure the xxxx is an auto increment but will be reset back to 0000 every new month.
For example:
2012010000-1 (Month January, so start from 0000)
2012010001-1
2012010002-1

I am working on a simple window application (VS2010,VB.NET). It's an HR management App - Employees records.I need simply insert/edit Employee Info, reports in Excel (with out crystal reports) & Show in Grid.So I am thinking of using Telerik RAD WinForms (2011) only because it looks cool. But I also know that Telerik could be a real pain when you need more flexibility.Although my application is quite basic still I want to determine whether I should go with Telerik or just use standard Windows Forms functionality? How can I generate custom report in specific format.Also It would be nice if some one point me to some sample application or VB.NET windows Tutorials?

I have set up a method in vb.net and in xcode for encrypting a string using as far as i can tell the same parameters for an AES encryption.I've looked all over the place but cannot find information on whether they use the same encryption algorithm and settings.

View 6 RepliesSo I found this little morpg. The game is fun but really repetitive. I would like to simplify some of the tasks in the game. I do not know how to start this project. How can I recored arrow keys and then tell the computer to enter the arrow keys? One of the objectives in the game is to run around a farm 2x and scare away any wolfs. So the commands would be "arrow key up" for 30sec and then "arrow key right" for 4 sec and repeat. I have worked with robots in real life for some time. We would fill arrays with such instructions. One of the most fun things to program! But I have no idea how to do this in VB.

i developed a very simple vb.net application and i need a way for every user to verify that they have paid for it. i would like the simplest method possible. it will be an off-line registration. Although I thought I had registered for the 2008 VB Express, several attempts to run the application resulted in a "stall" at the following address: url...I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application several times but with the same result.I also installed the latest Vista service pack. This is a problem with my desktop.I have not (yet) experienced the same issue with my laptop.

At the moment when a user calls for support, I log onto there PC using RealVNC, I ask them to tell me there IP address by hovering over there VNC Icon in there system bar. What I would like to do is create a program that runs on my pc, so when they log onto there pc there username and ip is registered in my program, so when they call, i can quickly look up there IP Address for VNC. View 1 RepliesI want to create a log in and registration form in VB connecting to a sql database.
Databse Name: Users
Table Name: UserDetails
Table Fields: ID, Username, Password
The ID field was specifed as primary and self incrementing by 1 and the table has one username and password (being Id: 1, Username: peter, Password: admin). The Login form works, it checks to see if the user exists, if they do, they gain access, if not a message box is displayed. The Registration form however does not and I have no idea why, its probably something simple but yeah, hence the reason Im here! When I register I can add a user fine, and it wont allow me to add the same user, but when I look at the table, it is not updated :S and I have no idea why!! Even after registering the user closing the application and starting again, say I registered the following:
Username: Fred
Password: 123
Then I login with these credentials, it works. When I close the program and reopen the program, it still works and will not allow me to register a new user being Fred, 123. However after 3 or 4 minutes when I try again, the user no longer exisits and I can re-register with set credentials? The code is shown below (1st the login form that works, second the registration that doesnt).
