Use Relative Paths But Also Read From Full File Names?
Sep 5, 2009
My program has to store files externally to work with. Before now the path was fixed at C:/DSGameMaker, I did the following:
System.IO.File.ReadAllText("C:/DSGameMaker/data.dat")
However I want to let users install the program wherever they want, so I changed that line and others to:
System.IO.File.ReadAllText("data.dat")
Which works great, until you do this:
System.IO.File.ReadAllText("D:/X/Y.Z")
As soon as I put a fixed path into the ReadAllText function it changes the relative path to D:/X. Which means the following function looks inside D:/X instead of the apps directory:
System.IO.File.ReadAllText("data.dat")
And complains that "D:/X/data.dat" is not found.
How can I use relative paths but also read from full file names, for example from an OpenFileDialog, without VB changing my relative path, and breaking it all from then onwards?

I am trying to create a sort of 'personal code library' in visual studio 2010 where the form displays a list box of certain project files in vb that I have made in the past and when selected, a button can be pressed that launches the .exe files of those visual basic program project files or displays the source code (.vb file)

I'm trying to write a little Jukebox application in VB Forms, and I need the pathnames of the sound files (inTracks"Insert Name Here") to be relative instead of absolute, so that it may work on a different computer to mine. At the moment, I am testing with the simple Soundplayer class, and the single line of code to play a song is this: My.Computer.Audio.Play("inTracks" & txtCurrentlyPlaying.Text) It works when, instead of inTracks, I put the full pathname (C:Documents And Settings etc.), but not when I try a relative path such as this.

it has been a while since I have asked a question here so I thought now would be a great time to do so. I am creating an application that loops through the file names of a specific directory, in this case, the System32 folder. I want the program to compile a list of the file names and then I want the file names to be displayed on a Timer_Tick event so the name will change on every tick. If anyone could provide a snippet of code to achieve this that would be great. I have been researching and debugging all night with no luck.

How would i read a set of names out of a file and then append them to a list box?I am not guaranteed a pair will be on the same line, and not guaranteed that a line would contain a maximum of one pair(i.e., it might have three pairs or it might have one and a half pairs - a first name, last name, and another first name whose matching last name would be on the next line). A line may also be blank. All of this needs to be in a visual basic format.

I am upgrading a project from VB6 to VB.NET. Due to my non disclosure agreeement I cannot post DLL names or the full code here. Here's the situation. I am making a program that works with a USB scanner. In VB6 there is this function:
vb.net Public Declare Function GetCode Lib "MyDll.dll" Alias "myAlias" _(ByVal DeviceID as Long, ByVal CodeLine as String, ByVal Length as Long) as Long So, in VB6, to get the code from the scanner, you would do this:

How do you use a parameterized query to make the (last_name, first_Name) appear in the same combo box? I know how do drag them over from the DATA SOURCES menu, but I am trying to combine them. So instead of it being two separate combo boxes with both last_name and first_name), it want it to find the the names with first and last name in the same combo box.

I am trying to populate a listbox on form load of a list of directories. I only want to show the directory name, not the full path:
[code]...
The form opens w/ no data in the list box. I played w/ this for a bit and found the strFolderName(i) assignment seems to break the code (make it not work) but I can't figure out why.

I hate to ask this question on this forum, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding it on these online tutorials. Basically, I'm learning about SQL, VB.NET, and how to glue the two together, and I've learned about using SqlCommand.executeScalar() to get the first entry in a table. But that's all it's really good for, right? Or is there something more to the story here?
Basically, I'm wanting to ask about how to pull in a FULL table from a SQL database while using VB.NET, as well as how to pry substrings and stuff from it. Again I'm having to ask this on this forum because all these online tutorials seem to ignore the subject completely.

I can use appactivate to bring forward a screen on another program if I know it's title (or at least part of it's title). Is there a way I can read the full title of such a screen if I bring it into focus? e.g I have a screen from another program which says "Patient Mrs Smith". I can bring it to the front by doing an appactivate from my VB prog and calling appactivate("Patient"). Is there a way that I can find out the full title from my VB program?

The end result I am looking for is I want to add File Paths to a CheckedListBox. I only want certain file extensions and if a file by the same name but a specific extension exsists allready then I do not want to add those files to the CheckedListBox.
Example: I am only wanting these filetypes in my CheckedListBox (.gif, .tif, .bmp, and .jpg).However if the filetype (.PNG) allready exsists with the same filename (i.e. image. png and image.jpg) I then do NOT want to add that JPG. Only files that do not allready have a PNG with the same name. (I hope I was able to make this clear)
My current code will add the filetypes (.gif, .tif, .bmp and .jpg) to the CheckedListBox. However I do not know how to have the code only add the files that don't have the PNG.Here is my current code:[code].....

I am working with Visual Studio 2008 to concieve a small program.pdf file is supposed to open when a button is pressed. It work great with the code:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("<Full File Path>")
Only, I would like to place the pdf file in the project's folder and that would open wherever the project's folder is (on the Desktop, a USB port, anywhere).
1- How to get this relative path?
2- in which folder to put the pdf?

I have a form with a tabbed control on it. Each tab in the control simply loads an existing file in a reader to display to the user. I have added the files in a folder in my project. When I debug it works great. However, when I publish and move it to another computer, the program runs fine but none of the files show in the tab control tabs. The files do come with the solution when I publish.[code]I know there is a way to make the file path "relative" but I cannot figure out how and there really isn't many resources available to explain how this can be done.

I'm trying to write a program that allows you to; 1) open a mp3 or wav file via the user finding the file and copying the file path and pasting it into a text box and, 2) by pressing a button it will play the desired file, and then 3) by pressing another button it will stop playing the file. I've already have this under pat,
Private Sub cmdOne_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdOne.Click
My.Computer.Audio.Play(My.Resources.buzzer, AudioPlayMode.Background)
End Sub

I am working on a project and transferring the whole project back and forth. The thing is I am using a full file path in all my code ("c:/Users/..."), so when I transfer to the other computer the file paths break. Everything I am linking to is in the "bin" folder in my project's folder. How do I have file paths relative to the project folder?

I have completed my VB project using vb 2008 express edition..I am not able to create a set up file for my project and I think it is because of the file path i have provided in my program
dbSource = "Data Source = C:Documents and SettingscfadminDesktopLead_managementLead_Management_ProjectLead_Management_ProjectLondon.mdb"
The above path is a fixed path which connects my program to the database. Now when I create a set up file and try to run on another machine it wont recognize this path . have placed the database in the same folder that of the program.

I am working on a project that consists of manipulating several reports (word and excel). At the beginning of my project I set all paths to a hard string (C:users...................) using the my.settings. Worked great during developement but now its time to test on other machines. I have been toying with using Application.StartupPath but cannot figure out how to modify the app.config so I do not have to recode my forms (given it would not take long), not to sound lazy but I know there has to be a way to achieve a computer specific path to find the reports in the application directory.
