I found using AndAlso/OrElse, all the time, VERY annoying. It reduces code readability, especially when conditioning get complicated.
View 2 RepliesI know that there is no DESIGN, DESIGN_MODE, DESIGN_TIME, etc preprocessor directive value. However, I need something that can do the trick. I can't use a normal If statement, because in my case I need to change the inherited class so that the control renders properly at design time. If not, I'll receive an exception due to the fact that the inherited class is an abstract class.Here's what I'm looking to accomplish:

Did anyone else read this article under Visual Basic News? I thought it was a very bad treatment of the subject. I especially don't like articles like that when the code they post relies on Option Strict Off.

I cannot find any other instances where the bitwise operator would be used instead of the logical operator, are there?

I recently installed visual studio 2010 and am using visual basic.The problem I am having is that some operators do not show up within the editor. For example the code line below
test = 3 + 5 - 6 / 7 * 4
only displays
test 3 5 - 6 / 7 * 4
the = + operators are not visible although they are there since the program will work as intended....and if I open up the .vb file in notepad everything is there. It just won't display within Visual Studio.

I have seen in Debugging .net 2.0 Applications the following code [code] Is there any reason to use the #if directive? I mean, from what I understand the method will only be called if the DEBUG is defined, so I don't see a point in having the #if in the method body.

View 1 RepliesI have a multilingual company website (Visual Studio / VB / ASP.NET 4.0), and when, on the homepage, you click a flag, the text changes to that language and stays with you the entire session, after I made a class, BasePage.vb. Everything works great, but the URL never changes .... clients.aspx remains clients.aspx although the text DOES switch to Dutch.
It's been recommended by @Aritstos to make it so it looks like clients.aspx?lang=nl as opposed to just clients.aspx in another language.

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)
However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.
I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.

I am coding a VB.NET application which heavily deals with a collection type. See the code below:

I have to type the above line for so many times. If I changed the collection type, then I have to make the change for all the instances. So if there is a way to use "a typedef equivalent", then I can get rid of all these problems. I tried with imports, but it is only for namespaces and it can't be used for classes.
Note: I am using VB 2008, windows XP. The application type is windows forms(VB). EDIT: I made some tries based on code_gray's below answer. This is the first try.

Everyting works fine until I try to do the same in VB.Net. VB.Net refuses to compile code where a parameter of a property is passed ByRef. MSDN says VB.Net doesn't allow such parameters. Is there any way I could implement such a property in VB.Net?
I'm trying to integrate with an API that requires the "Date" header in a web request. As you may well know, .NET has removed the ability to append or even display a default Date header in your request, so I was wondering about a workaround.Here's the catch: you can't use TCPClients because I don't have "permissions" on my server for such a thing as sockets. Is there some way to "cheat" the system to fake a date header or to trick it into posting a Date header? Or should I just give up on this API?

View 2 RepliesIf I look at the IL that is created in Linqpad for the two following code snippets, I wonder what happens here.
In c#
int i = 42;
results in the following IL code
IL_0000: ret
whereas in VB
Dim i As Integer = 42
it is
IL_0000: ldc.i4.s 2A
IL_0002: stloc.0
Apparently, the c# compiler understands the the value is never used and thus simply returns nothing. In VB.NET the actual code is translated.Is that due to differences in compiler optimization or is there anything else at work?
Update: Just to clarify this - I just enter this one line into LinqPad and look at the IL it creates (most definitely by running the respective compiler). There is no program.
I'm downloading a bunch of files from a URI but when they get big, I get an utOfMemoryException. I thought at first it was MemoryStream error but I'm pretty sure now that the error is rooted in the declaration of an array of Bytes that's too large. (Half a gig is fine, 1.7 gig is not.)

All of them (for this example) simple/primitives types (integer,string,string).So this my dilemma, it is correct to have a constructor like this (VB .net)

View 2 RepliesI'm trying to make a label transparent. When I set the BackColor to transparent, all it does it take the color of the form it's sitting on, i.e. It's not truly transparent. I've googled it and found this in another thread (from a MSFT MVP)".NET controls do not support true transparency. You can set their BackColor to Transparent (in some but not all cases) and the parent control will show through, but only the parent control. If there is some other control behind that is not the parent it will not show through. That's because the control is not truly transparent. It basically copies its parent in the area behind it and uses that as its background, but that doesn't include sibling controls that may be behind it as well." To me, this is completely unacceptable. Why even include the transparency option when all it does is set the control's backcolor to the form color? I'm trying to add a label over a progress bar to give my user some feedback (because the Visual Studio progress bar doesn't support text, which is also a horrible design shortfall by the way), and have yet to find a way around this.

A list that contains numbers and you want to find the Min/Max (without LINQ), you can sort the list and pull the first/last element. It's also useful to display lists to the user in alphabetical order.

View 23 RepliesI need to test a logical expression held in a string to see if it evaluate to TRUE or FALSE.(the strig is built dynamically)For example the resulting string may contain "'dog'<'cat' OR (1>4 AND 4<6)". There are no variables in the string, it will logically evaluate. It will only contain simple operators = > < >< >= <= and AND , OR and Open and Close Brackets, string constants and numbers. (converted to correct syntax && || etc.)
I currently acheive this by creating a jscipt function and compiling it into a .dll. I then reference the .dll in my VB.NET project.
