Vb Express Not Updating Local Database?

Mar 13, 2012

i'm using a copy of visual basic express for my home projects. i'm just started one that is needing a local database, so i added one to the project and created the tables with with colums no problems.

i created an 'Admin' user straight into the database and use that to log in. i have also created an a form so that you can add other users and view existing users in a datagrid view.

the original source code i used was supplied in on this forum page:

[URL]

its all well and good, and works fine, right up to the point when i shut the program down and then re-open it the next day, all the users i created the previous day arent there anymore.

the code for creating the users is this :

Dim con As SqlCeConnection = New SqlCeConnection(My.Settings.Database1ConnectionString)
con.Open()

I have created a local database using the DB wizard in 2008 express.I have created a table called users and I can access the sample data that I have entered into it using a windows form. When I try to add a new record things come unstuck. The record shows in the windws form as being present and the record count increases to indicate this. But when i check the DB itself there is no sign of the record.I am using the tableadapter method as outlined by MSDN. So the question is what am i doing wronghere is the code from the form:

Updating Some Fields In Sql Express From Vs 2008

Dec 17, 2010

I'm using a SQL Express 64 database on a separate server virtual machine. I've been developing my app for some time now in VS2008 on XP SP3. Using .Net 3.5 I've just come across a strange problem. If I update a checkbox from unchecked (the default) to checked, it saves OK. If I click to uncheck it, the change does not get saved. I'm using the UpdateAll method. I tried a single Update command as well, just for that table, but it was the same.

VB 2010 Express - Create A Simple Local Data File On PC Using Mysql

Jul 15, 2010

I have been reading about ADO, SQL, datasets, data adapters etc and have gone into information overload. My next step is to create a simple data file of my own that I can manipulate, update, sort etc in VB Express. Do I need another piece of software? I read about MySQL, which I understand is primarily used to access databases on the net, but can that be used to create a simple local data file on my PC? Can you simply hard code something in VB Express?

Deploying Desktop Application With SQL Server Express As Backend Db On Local Area Network

May 28, 2009

Basically back in VB6 days, I created several VB6 apps with Access as the backend database. I'd package my Access db file with the application setup, which copied it on to a shared network drive, and then different computers on the LAN could use the same backend database file, and that worked just fine. With SQL and VB .Net, I've done work with a SQL database hosted on a remote server, so you can basically build your query string easily and anyone can connect to it from anywhere, and it works just fine. However, what I'd like to do is have a local SQL express database as the backend for a VB .Net application and make a setup program that can install it in a way that it could be shared on a Local area network, without the user who is installing the application do anything.

I know about building a connection string with the local machine name, but I don't really have any experience with including an actual MDF file with the application. Does anyone know how it works, and is it a better approach? Does it work similar to placing an access file in a shared unc path?I know that ClickOnce (which is awesome) can install SQL express easily on a user's machine. However, the key is that I want SQL express to be installed only on the machine that is going to be the database server in a LAN enviornment, and not on every machine, unless it is neccesseary. And then how does your VB app know how to build the connection string to access the database from any machine on the local share?

VS2010 Converted 32bit App From .Net 1 To .Net 4 Not Loading Without Local Version Of SQL Server 2008 Express Running?

Mar 28, 2011

I have an application that will not load unless my local SQL Server is running on an Vista Home Premium machine. This started after a .Net 1 to .Net 4 conversion. I am using a sub main sub that is not being called (msgbox is not fired when entering the app), however, I see the app through taskmgr with increasing memory usage, but then the app is removed from the list. By design, if the program cannot locate a SQL Server a form pops up with a connection box to locate the SQL Server for the app. How it determines if it has a valid connection is the program looks for a connection string in the registry, then attempts to connect to it, however, none of this code executes because of the failure to enter into the sub main. The two machines I have tried the 32 bit app on

XP Pro: Failed / Using SQL Server 2008 Express

Windows 2003 Server: Works / Using SQL Server 2008 Developer

Both machines have .Net 4 Client Profile with Extended?

XCopy Deployment Of A VB Express App Which Uses A SQL Server Express Database?

May 13, 2005

It's probably just a case of me not looking in the right place or not seeing the obvious, but does anyone know if a machine with just version 2.0 of the .NET Framework should be able to run a VB.NET Express application which accesses a SQL Server Express database file? Or is there an additional requirement for a non-development machine to have some kind of SQL Server Express runtime component in addition to the 2.0 Framework? It seems to be counterintuitive to expect that a VB.NET application would be able to access any kind of SQL Server data without having some kind of SQL Server host component (Express or otherwise) installed. But then again, it seems just as counterintuitive that Microsoft would require the download and installation of the new framework as well as a separate database runtime in order for the average user to run an application with accesses a local SQL Server Express database. To me, it runs contrary to the whole concept of XCopy deployment to require more than just the application's files and .NET Framework for an application to run properly. But nothing I've read so far explicitly indicates that a user would require anything more than the app files and the framework to run an application which accesses SQL Server Express data. But...I can't get any VB Express applications which uses a SQL Server Express databases to run on any machine that doesn't have SQL Server Express installed. What am I missing?(Apologies if this isn't the right group to post this in.

VB Express 2008 -> Access 2007 Updating Items Slow?

Jun 12, 2011

I'm using Visual Basic Express 2008 to create an interface with a order database in MS Access 2007 (.accdb file). Everything is fully functional except updating the "Inventory" table is very slow. Updating around 2200 items takes almost 2 minutes and the window will appear as "not responding" for the duration if you click away and come back. Here is the process:1. Tab-delimited text file is picked by user, which includes all inventory items (not just new ones)2. Each line from text is parsed and read into variables (tempSKU, tempItemTitle, etc.)3. Old items are updated and new ones are added. -> This is the bottleneck

I used to have a series of IF statements to check which elements were changed and report them, but that was about 2x as slow. The new code is a little faster but doesn't provide the feedback I liked (update part is commented around):

Private Sub btnImportInv_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) andles btnImportInv.Click
Dim strName As String

Add A Remote SQLServer Database To My Database Explorer Window In 2010 Express?

Feb 14, 2011

I'm trying to use LINQ to SQL in Visual Basic 2010 Express.

It allows me to create the .dbml file, but in order to drag items from the Database Explorer window to the design surface, I first have to get my database listed in the Database Explorer!(this is a remote SQL Server database - not a local .mdf)

I already have a good, working connection string to the remote SQL Server database, but that doesn't help me when I'm trying to generate the DBML at design time.

Can anyone tell me how to get my remote SQL Server database identified in the Database Explorere window? When I try the "Add Connection", I am limited to Access, SQL Server Compact, or SQL Server Database File. If I try to enter the IP address & port of my DB Host I get a 'database file does not exist' message. Doesn't seem to want to let me point to a remote DB server...

New Winform App With Local Database

Feb 26, 2009

I have some scripting exp in html, bash, sql, and am working my way through a video tutorial of VB, studio2008 and access 2008 are the apps, though I am thinking of switching to a freel sql application, as my sql skills are pretty decent, just need to rap them into VB.I am working on creating a winform application that will live on an employee's local laptop, that can be used for tracking troubleshooting incidents. The app will write data to local database first independent of internet connection, but can then upload changes to case data that have taken place since last sync, to the current web addressed server. Presently, we access case data through browser, but it is slow, and very tedious, and my idea is to create a stand alone app that can hopefully automate a lot of the tedious functions.. ie create cases from templates, etc..

So far, I created a layout that I thought would work well, by dragging and dropping from tool bar in Visual studio. I also created a database that can store data locally in access. Now, I am trying to figure out how to bind text boxes, month calendars, etc to the actual fields in the database. I am here for general advice, but specifically, I have a tab with a month calendar tool, and a data-grid view beneath it. I want the user, to be able to select dates, or date spreads on the calendar and have cases relative to those dates, display in the datagridview below.[code]and have the month calendar utility populate the case_dttm portion of the query.

Writing To A Local Database?

Jan 27, 2011

I'm currently under way with a computing project for 6th form and I have encountered a problem when working with a local database.

To give an overview:

-My program is intending to take in data on lorries, drivers and other sections of the haulage industry through multiple forms and afterwards be returned in a suitable manner.

-I have no trouble in reading data from my database that I have set up. However I am unable to write back to the database.

-I can add the relevant new data to either the specific table(Driver_Table in this case) of the Database1DataSet.xsd or to a table set up in this manner.

-My problem is with the Driver_TableTableAdapter.update method.

-When I call this it returns a value of 1 (for one row added) but does not write this to the database.

In specifics the particular section (created to test this section of code) is:

'Dim tbl As New Database1DataSet.Driver_TableDataTable
Driver_TableTableAdapter1.Fill(Database1DataSet1.Driver_Table)
' Driver_TableTableAdapter1.Fill(tbl)

Local And Remote Database Sync

Dec 5, 2009

I'm posting this in the vb.net as I will be using visual studio to perform the task. So here is what I am trying to achieve or at least achieve it more efficiently than what I am doing now.

So I have two identical database setups, both with a table , let call it table tblUsers. The local database is edited through vb.net and is a Access database. The second database is hosted on a remote server and is a MySQL databse.

Currently I have no problem connecting and editing either database through vb.net. I'm using OLE DB to connect and handle the Access database and ODBC 5.1 to connect and handle the MySQL database.

Here is what I would like to do:

User opens the program Presses the "update local" button

The program updates the local database to whatever the remote database is The user uses the program to edit fields in the local database

When done, the user presses the "Update remote" button and the remote database fields that have been edited with the program in the local database will be updated to the remote database.

Currently, the only way for me to do this is to go line by line in a for next and use a command builder to compare each field and update that way.
