Vb6 Upgrade Wizard Error - OLE_E_CANT_BINDTOSOURCE
Jun 1, 2006
When I run the VB6 upgrade wizard in Visual Studio 2005 I get an error. It is not related to the application I am upgrading, because I even get the error if I run it on a "blank" vb6 app. I've re-installed, and still no luck. The entire error reads:Unexpected exception occurred during upgrade engine operation: Not able to bind to the source (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8004000A (OLE_E_CANT_BINDTOSOURCE))

I know that VS 2003, 2005 and 2008 had the VB6 to VB.NET Upgrade Wizard. Now, on a email list I'm on a said that he cannot open a .vbp file to use the upgrade wizard in VB 2010. Is there no Upgrade Wizard in VB 2010?

I guess this explains why Microsoft didn't include the VB6 upgrade wizard in VS 2010.[URL]...

Should I run a classic VB6 app thru the upgrade wizard in VS08 or should I re-design it from scratch. The database is a mess. Originally designed in ACCESS and imported to MS SQL SERVER. The main entities are e.g. ROLLER_SKATES and RENTALS. If you would like to rent a pair of roller skates you can. So this more or less comprises an Inventory system for the roller skates. Now you have 2 different skating rings. Skate-B1 and Skate-Z9, and you keep redundant and duplicate data from the previously mentioned entities in the skating ring tables as well. It's a nightmare.
At least the tables have row ID's. But no explicit foreign keys, just implicit columns identically named that "seem" to correspond to each other. But the rest of the table's attributes all default to NULL. Considering what C.J Date says about Types in his book SQL and the Relation Model, isn't it desirable to have CHECK CONSTRAINTS on attributes?

I have a Visual Basic 6 program that I would like to update to Visual Basic .NET I am running Windows 7 Professional and have downloaded and installed Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition. The problem I have encountered is that when I open my VB6 project file (.vbp) the Upgrade Wizard does not open. Instead, a list of references, objects and forms from my project appear. Is there any other way to run the wizard? Or am I missing something?

I am upgrading a VB6 to VB.NET project using the upgrade wizard.I know this is going to give me a lot of grief, but I am trying to make the old application useable. I'd rewrite it if I had time but am currently finishing up a summer internship and would like to get something working. One thing the wizard is doing that I can find no justification for is renaming of random variables. [code] For the life of me I don't understand why this is changing left. It isn't a reserved name as far as I can tell, there is no other variable named left that I can find in scope, and renaming it does not create a compiler error. [code] It does this to seemingly random variables throughout my project. Anyone have ideas as to why it doesn't like some of my variable names?

I have been supporting vb.net application which worked fine with office 2003 but when one of my client upgraded to the office 2007.then we got a error like this after a bit of research ,i found that
"One possibility is that the file is corrupt (Access databases have a tendency to do that -- see
Article #2190 for a way to compact / repair the database through code). A more common reason is that you are trying to connect to an Access 97 database with Access 2000 or better drivers, or vice-versa. Make sure the server has the most recent MDAC (MDAC Download Page) and the most recent JET drivers (see Article #2342). Also, try upgrading your database to a more recent format (Access 2000 or better)."
may be my case is similar.the applicattion is working fine with the other users ,only the user who upgraded to office has got the problem.

I am trying to upgrade a VB6 application to vb2008 Express and on all of my ADO requeries I get an unhandled message "Operation is not allowed when the form is open" which doesn't make a bit of sence to me. I have an ADO Data control which is bound to a data grid and when the form is loaded I initialize the ADO Data Control using such statements as:strSQL = "SELECT * FROM MyTable WHERE site = " & sCurrentSite
Me.Adodc2.RecordSource = strSQL
Me.Adodc2.Recordset.Requery()

I am trying out the Visual Studio 2008 Standard Edition Setup and Deployment - Setup Wizard on a very simple VB 2008 app which includes a simple SQL Express dB. The build works fine and it installs on the target system ok. But when I go to run the application and add a new record for example, I get a "read-only" error indicating that the sql db is read-only. Yet none of the files in the folder are read-only. What is odd is that the folder that it was installed into "acts" like it is read only, yet it is not identified as such. If I move the .exe and db files out of that folder, (onto the desktop for example) it works just fine. Should I set up a post build event or something to make

I have a class project that supplied me with an Access 2007 DB. When in VB and go through the steps for creating a data source. When the Wizard comes up I click on Database, Next, New Connection, Data Source is Microsoft Access Dagabase File (OLE DB), Browse to Database File Name, Test Connection is successful, click on OK, then Next. A MSVS box appears "The connection selected uses a local data file that is not in the current project. "Would you lie to copy the file to your project and modify the connection?"I am supposed to click NO. When I do I get this "Wizard Form" "An unexpected error has occurred. Error Message: Cound not load type." I need to be able to go to the next part of the Configuration Wizard that says "Choose Your Database Objects" I evensaved the file as Access 2003, and it will not work.

At the end of the re-installation of Visual Studio 2008, there is this message: "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard: [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard. MSI returned error code 1638" in the log file dd_error_vs_procore_90.txt.
When I searched for just "MSI returned error code 1638", I got that it
cannot install something because it is already installed: "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove Programs on the Control Panel".
In Add/Remove Programs I see these two programs:
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.3
Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard 1.4
Are these programs/versions what the error is refering to? Am I safe to remove them and depend on the similarly-named item which would be newly installed with Visual Studio 2008 - "Microsoft SQL Publishing Wizard"?
I still use SQL Server 2000 and 2005 on my computer, as well as 2008.
I had installed VS 2008 on my computer before without this problem and also have VS 2005 and 2010.

I have several programs that I wrote in Visual Basic.net 2003 that I run from a server at work. We upgraded to Visual Studio 2008 recently and I converted my code to that version. I rebuilt the .exes and tried to run it from the server. It said I needed to upgrade the framework on the server, which I did. Now when I run the .exe file from the server I get a runtime error:
Runtime Error!
Program: d:...
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applicaiton's support team for more information.
These programs are very important to the day-to-day operations of the company I work for. I did backup the software before converting it, so we're running normally right now, but there are modifications and upgrades I need to make as soon as possible, but cannot due to the programs crashing when I run the on the server.

I have written an address book and for its database, I used Access to create a .mdb database and store my data programmatically into this .mdb file. However, the problem is that when reading and saving data to this kind of database I have to use Jet 4.0 which is NOT available on 64-bit systems and I have to compile my application as 32-bit in order to run on all systems.I just want to know how is upgrade to SQL?I never used SQL, can I create a stand-alone database file using SQL like Access and create tables/fields so I can modify it programmatically?I also need the database file to be independent and don't need any special requirements to run on target systems, like the .mdb file I've created in Access!

Possible Duplicate: Best Strategy for moving from VB6 to .NET Conversion tool comparisons for visual basic 6.0 Is there a good tool anyone can recommend to convert a commercial VB6 application into a VB.NET application. I have discovered some free ones and some commercial one's, but can't find any reviews and opinions of developers who have tried and failed or tried and succeeded.
What are the complexities involved? I know that .NET uses managed code and multi threaded apartments etc whereas VB6 is based on COM.

I have a VB.NET solution that I just upgraded. It was originally in .NET 1.1, I upgraded to .NET 2.0 and verified that it would build and run correctly. Then I upgraded from 2.0 to 4.0. It is still building with no errors, but when I try to run I am getting a NullReferenceException in Global.asax.vb. The really weird thing is, the line that is throwing the exception is this:
Dim dt As System.Data.DataTable I am not trying to use the variable, just declare it. Further down a Function is called that returns a DataTable and sets the variable, but I don't even get to that line. It is throwing the NullReferenceException on the Dim line. Has anyone run across this before? Is this some issue with upgrading?
[Code]...
I did a Rebuild Solution before posting. This is a web application and the only files I see in the bin folder are the dll files I am referencing. I'm not sure what else I should clean up.

I've given a VisualBasic Software, written in VB5. Now the whole thing should run under Windows 7, so it needs to be converted to VB8 or VB9. It seems that most of the API of VB changed a lot in these years, so for me it seems quite impossible to run just a few code upgrades and everything is fine...
The biggest Problem are Forms. There are a lot of Forms in this Software, which are declared inside .frm files and begin always like this:
[Code]...
It seems for me that this Stuff was generated with an UI-Layouter, so none self written code is in there. Is it possible to run this code in VB8/9 or even rewrite it that VB8/9 understands it? I'm currently very pesimistic and think that the whole software needs to rewritten...

I've written a VB.Net program and it's deployed all across the U.S. When I make changes or bug fixes and want to get a new version out to my clients, I'm wondering if there is an automated way of upgrading the clients. I cannot use Click-Once deployment, I have over 7,000 users and want to control the upgrade through a program. Is there a tool in the toolbox for automating this process?
In VB6, I used the INet control, is there an equivelent to this in .Net?
