Web Service Active Connection Test
Feb 22, 2012
What is the best way to check if a web service is up and active? I realize there are many different factors to this, but I would like to do something simple before sending data, like at the moment the proxy is constructed to see if the service is able to be connected. I am coding in vb.net.Is there even a best practice for this type of comm?

I had a problem getting a VB.NET web service client to receive the response object from a Java web service. In the process of posting this question someone from another department volunteered some code written for a similar situation.I couldn't find this anywhere on the net so I'm completing my question to help others out.[code]The web service is Apache CXF with some Spring elements mixed in.

Alright, I'm currently trying to use a Web Service to talk to an Active Directory. I've spent hours scourging the net and can't find a solution to this. The current password is Testing1234
And I want to change it to Complete9876 But I get this error message:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800708C5): The password does not meet the password policy requirements. Check the minimum password length, password complexity and password history requirements. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800708C5) obviously, this makes little sense, since the password does indeed meet the requirements. Here's the

I am having a problem with a unit test I have created. First time doing this so I am not sure why I am getting this error [code]Test method ETDS_Unit_Tests.LoginTest.ValidateUserNameTest threw exception: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server). This is the same connection that my software is using, and the software runs fine, only the unit test is failing. What I am doing wrong? It Seems to fail one time for each datarow in the table. Also, I am using a Linq Query in the method that I being tested. I believe that this may be what is causing my error.

I created a function that allows me to login to my web service. I created a session here and added some values I retrieved from a stored procedure.[code].....
My question is: I have a default.aspx and a master page, how can I redirect the user when their session is active? For example, the default page tells users that access is forbidden untill the login/register.Do I have to use the form load handler for default.aspx or the masterpages' load handler? How do I check weither the usersession is active?

I am using a third party OPC library.I have a routine that basically checks that the connection to OPC is active and if not, waits 10 seconds and reinitializes by calling a .disconnect / .connect on the third party library's object. The OPC connection somewhere in its chain is using a com object that dislikes this behavior due to the object belonging to another thread.Ordinarily I would invoke a delegate to get the call back on the correct thread, however this base class does not implement ISSynchronizeInvoke.
Is there another way to make sure a a call to to an objects methods occur on the thread they were created on from within a system.timers.timer which is obviously running on another thread?Error message is: "The application called an interface that was Marshalled for a different thread. (RPC_E_WRONG_THREAD)"I know, kind of vague without a whole LOT of sample code, looking for pointers on where to even begin looking.

MVC3, VB.NET, using EF. I am working on coding up a simple function to handle checking for a valid MySQL connection. If the connection fails the test it will use the secondary server connection. This is required because our hosting provider does not provide failover or redundant MySQL servers. The problem is I tried to use a simple try catch method in the HomeController. This fails early because the Entity Framework is looking the connection that was set up when I set it up... Is there anyway to control that connection dynamically?

We have a WCF service hosted in IIS that currently calls a VB6 DLL to do part of its job. This works fine, but we can't deploy the service to a 64-bit target environment without configuring IIS to run it in a 32-bit worker process.I am currently investigating ways around that restriction. Porting the VB6 DLL to .NET is not possible for various reasons, so I created an ActiveX EXE wrapper around the DLL in VB6, so that the service can run in 64-bit and the VB6 parts in 32-bit.
When I tested the service I got this error:
Type: System.UnauthorizedAccessException
Message: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {9AE7303B-D159-43F6-B1A5-52D297581820} failed due to the following error: 80070005.
After some Googling I found that this is due to either:
Calling an MS Office component
DCOM permissions not being configured
NTFS file permissions not allowing read/exec access to the IIS worker process identity (ASPNET in my environment)
Of these:
Definitely not applicable Also not applicable; I am not hosting the EXE in DCOM or COM+, just a simple COM out-of-process activation
This looks likely; however, I checked the permissions, and NTFS reports that the Users group (which ASPNET is a member of) does indeed have read/exec access to the file I tried calling the EXE from a unit test fixture, which is executed in my admin-level account rather than the IIS worker process account, and it worked fine, so the error is definitely something to do with permissions. I'm not sure what to do next.
UPDATE:The IIS virtual directory is configured for Anonymous+Windows access; the WCF service uses only Anonymous authentication, the Windows authentication is for the VS debugger. Task Manager reports that the aspnet_wp.exe process is definitely running in the ASPNET account.I explicitly granted Read and Execute access to the ASPNET and IUSR_<machine> accounts on all the COM exes and dlls involved. This made no difference.
I explicitly granted Local Launch and Local Activation access to the ASPNET and IUSR_<machine> accounts on the relevant interfaces in the DCOM configuration. This made no difference either.Keep trying to get this working somehow.Go the whole hog and host the EXE in COM+.Give up. Tell users that the WCF service must be configured to run in a 32-bit app pool on 64-bit Windows.

I have a connection string (which works fine) to connect to AD through my web application in my web.config. Traditionally, however, I've created a new connection to pull info. from the user after login like so:
Using adDirectory as New DirectoryEntry("LDAP://OU=myou,DC=mydc,DC=dc,DC=com")
Dim adTicketID as String = ticket.Name
myVar = "adDirectory.Children.Find("CN=" & adTicketID).Properties("myproperty").Value
End Using
It seems that I should instead use the connection from the web.config like so:
Using ADCS as New DirectoryEntry
Dim adTicketID as String = ticket.Name
myVar = "adDirectory.Children.Find("CN=" & adTicketID).Properties("myproperty").Value
End Using
Is this possible? How would I accomplish it so that I don't need to constantly create new directoryentries?

I've set up a test database to begin unit-testing an app that I've recently been added to. It is a 3-tier design (presentation layer, BOL and DAL) and this is my first time writing unit tests. I've decided to start at the BOL and I figure the best way is to swap out the ConnectionString (which has been passed along as a Shared String) with one that points to my new test database. However, I don't wish to change any production code. I simply wish to somehow redirect the app to the test database during unit tests.

I have tested my code in a windows form project and it works great. so now I want it to run as a service. The problem i have is referring to "name" in my configuration string which is in app.config.
Dim settings As ConnectionStringSettings = _
ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(Name)
(Name) is under-squiggled and message name is not declared, file IO functionality is available in the microsoft.visualbasic namespace.

I have a VB.net web service that returns JSON that works fine. Once the response gets to a certain size though, the client browser says that the server has closed the connection and sent no data. This is true using IE, Chrome, or Firefox. The magic size seems to be about 16383 records, or about 1.13MB of data. I know this is slightly large for a web service.

i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a
generic class and is not marked as
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be
exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with
[ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit
interface as the default interface to COM using the
ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.

I have a windows service I created that checks for data to post to an off site webservice over SSL. The service checks every 10 seconds for data to send, if there is data it opens a connection to the remote webservice, and closes the connection after 120 seconds (still checking for data to send during this time). The service works fine if a user is RDP'd into the server, but as soon as no one is logged on and the service attempts to push data, I receive the following error:"The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send."I have tried running the service as a local service, network service, under my login, and under a service account, but nothing seems to work.
