Winforms - Iterate Through Connections Strings In App.Config File?
Nov 8, 2010
I am trying to iterate through all the connection strings in App.Config using VB.net.
I would like to:
1. Get a count of all the connection strings
2. Put them all into a listbox.
I have tried using System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings but am unsure exactly how to get the collection/listof connection strings.
The application is a WinForms VB.net .net 4.0 app.

I am coding this app on my home pc, but when complete it will be run on individual pc(s) (each pc has it oun HD) on a local network. I have a world of questions but right now how do I set the path to my database? is there a way to set a default if its not found.Database(s) that the app use's are stored in a folder on the server. i.e.: P:MyServerNameDeptFolderData for example.OLEDB or TableAdapters which would be the better choice.I understand that MS Access DB is rather resticting.

I'm having trouble accessing the connection string from the app.config file. my connection string is:
Dim sConnect As String = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=G:VB Level 1ProjectContactsDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True"
I using this string in a few different places, but I want to access it from the App.Config file. I've been at it for awhile and can't get it working.

I am using the winform datarepeater control from vb.net power pack. All of the items on the repeater are readonly except for a checkbox column.I want to iterate over the items and find out which checkboxes are checked. I can't find a collection of datarepeateritems on the control and help is scarce.

we are using the Enterprise Library data access application block in our data layer for an application. We must be doing something wrong though because we cannot seem to get encryption and the ability to reconfigure connection strings working well. For example, when the application starts, it checks if the connection strings are "Protected", and if they are not, we encrypt them using the following function:
[Code]...
Then comes another issue. If a user installs an update for the application, the first time it runs, nothing can connect if the config file was previously encrypted. A restart of the application (second time running) will fix the issue. with all of the battles we are fighting here, I wanted to ask if we are doing this right? How should we be encrypting and allowing updates. If you need to see the exceptions thrown, I can provide those upon request (will need to change some code to get them again, but it is doable).

I was currently looking at on old application that I am maintianing and it uses a mixture of retrieving Application config settings from both the App.config and application config table in the DB.In the new software I am working (a port of the old application) I have a list of email addresses that are static and rarely change, what would be the best mechanism for retrieving these. Currently I am using resource strings so that using them is a simple My.Resources., but what are the benefits/drawbacks of storing the information either in the App.Config or a database table.

I'm about to pull my hair out on this guys I do not know where I'm going wrong but basically I receive a web request response formatted in XML and I need to insert that data into an SQLCE database. I have tried using LINQ queries but there are no matching ID fields to Join or Group.

I am on a general scenario of deploying my vb.net database application on my client's computer.
Thinking of future problem of changing the database connection setting, i am planning to store it in a normal xml file in the app directory so that where ever it is installed, in order to make database configuration i only need to make change to that file and my program runs smoothly.
So is this idea of storing database connection setting to xml config file in app directory or is there any other better idea?
I am planning it for vb.net winforms applications

Say I have a List(Of Tag) with Tag being an object. One member of Tag, Tag.Description, is a string, and I want to make a comma-separated concatenation of the Description members. Is there an easier way to do this than to read the Description members into a List(Of String) and then use the Join function?

I have an application running with a access db. I have written some code to copy & zip the db file to another location (selected by the user) for the purpose of backup. (I am using sharpzipwrapper)Whenever I try to run the code for the copying & zipping it gives me an exception saying that the file cannot be zipped as it is use.Do I have to close all open connections in order to backup the .accdb file? If yes then how? else what do i have to do inorder to get 'access' to the file.Do I have to exit the application to close all connections? These connections are written in code for e.g. :

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

I have this pretty simple application, it uses a webService to transfer data to my servers DataBase. Now it is very important for me to keep this application as one single file, and not having some XML files needed for it to work, but this is the case. I think the XML file holds the information to this webService, so without it the application crashes. Is there a way to get the application to work without this XML file, or a way to put the XML inside the exe archive?

I have existing file named myapp.exe.config . What I would like to do is have a little app where user could specify path to app database. I know how to get file path but I dont know how to change existing line in myapp.exe.config file. No changes during runtime. Just simple app to change string in app.config file. I would like to enable user to select path to database and store that path in app.config file. Line which I would to change has a string "|DataDirectory|mydatabase.accdb" and i would like to change it with for ex. "C:Myappmydatabase.accdb" ( if it is selected file's path).

I've never thought about it before; but I recently learned how I could modify the app.config file to add/remove trace listeners (for example, to redirect all of the Trace.WriteLine output to a text file). But I don't quite understand how it works? I know the corresponding C# code to do the same as the config (in this example) - does that code get generated/executed before my application's entry point?

I'm using this code:
Dim tfLines() As String = System.IO.File.ReadAllLines("Config.ini")
For Each line As String In tfLines
Dim arr As String() = line.Split("="c)
If arr(0) = "title" Then textbox1.text = arr(1)
Next
To read from a config file that looks like this this:Quotetitle=this is the text Now is the question, how can I save to the config file?Like, replace "this is the text" with the new text in textbox1.text
