Xml Config File Key/values Mysteriously Being Cleared?

I have a vb.net 2010 windows forms application.I use an xml file to store application information.The file is in the same format as an app.config file but is NOT the app.config file.It is stored in
Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData
I read and write to it using xmldocument and all works fine
From time to time I get calls from clients that my application won't start
On checking this xml file I find all the key/values have been deleted.example of file.........

I would like to tweak some of the numbers in the app.exe.config file while the program is running. I would like my program to re-load those valued from the edited txt file.
I have tried my.settings.reset, reload, and upgrade. None of these seem to reload the values from the config file into the program

Added for my quick reference.When you use the following code to retrieve the values from config file in a library project.
Value = Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("KeyName")
The application will look for this key in AppSettings section of calling assembly and may lead to unpredictable results.

Well I'm in the middle of making a program to edit .ini files. Although I have hit a snag. I can save my settings (relies off checkboxes) with ease, however if I change something and/or hit the save button again even after the code has finished, both my entire .ini files are cleared (filePath and filePathPrefs) and all text is gone. why it's clearing the .ini file even after the initial write worked? I've tested to make sure the entire code has finished before making another save with different settings but the issue happens again.

A Windows service written in VB.NET is using the My.Settings namespace for simplicity. There are only three settings to read, and these are read within the constructor of the ServiceLauncher.
I am attempting to install the service as such:
installutil GID.ServiceLauncher.exe
And this is successful, however the config settings it is using are not the ones within the GID.ServiceLauncher.exe.config file, instead it is using the ones baked into the app as Default Settings within Settings.Designer.vb (marked with DefaultSettingValueAttribute). [The questionable wisdom of Microsoft not allowing a developer to ignore default settings is another question entirely].
How can I further diagnose this issue, and maybe force a reload of settings? I tried calling My.Settings.Default.Reload, however this did nothing. All settings are application settings, and only differ by "value" from those in the auto generated file.
I have successfully attached the debugger using System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch() and true enough, the settings are still the default settings.
In anticipation of the question, the background: The reason for requiring configuration settings is because this is a very straightforward service that simply executes an exe; and this exe is in configurable location. There are other reasons also, such as I wish to have the service name configurable without recompiling.

I am creating a windows service in .Net 4.0 and testing some functions of said service with a windows forms client by referencing the service project.The service project has an App.config file and that file looks like this: [code]a null reference error is thrown because my connection string is not loaded.The only connectionStrings that are loaded are from the machine.config file located in [code]If I create an application scope setting for the service, I can get that setting by using the My.Settings.setting so it's not like the App.config file is not being read.why are my connectionStrings not being loaded from the App.config file?When referencing a project(parent) from another project(child), the child's app.config is used even if the parent's classes are being used.Thus, I can get the connectionStrings to show up if I copy them over to the child's app.config. When trying to open it manually, my currentDirectory was of the child, not the parent (strange how it did not throw an exception - it wouldn't have been able to find the config file it just silently used the machine.config.

I built a small website and there will be only one admin, so in the admin panel I am asking for a password with a value that I do not retrieve from a database, I just hard coded it in the function in code behind, I know this is wrong though I don't know why.
So is hard coding it in web.config the right thing to do? and how?

How do you read the default values from the appName.exe.config file? My application only reads these values on first installation. Subsequently, it reads the updated values sitting in the user.config file.

I have a WCF service with a setting I created in the WCF application property editor (settings tab).It has created something like the following property in MySettings class in the Settings.Designer.vb file. Notice the DefaultSettingValueAttribute is set to "This is the OLD value". That's my value for local testing.

The problem is after restarting the WCF service (rebooting the server machine completely), it never reads the new value. It continues to use the old value that was set as the default value in the designer file.I think this must have to do with file permissions, but I don't see anything in the event log that indicates a problem. It's like the WCF service isn't even trying to read the web.config file.Why isn't the service reading the settings value from the web.config file?

So I've got a somewhat common problem from what I can tell from the search results..I developed a program, got a beta version performing well, noticed a few small bugs, fixed the (all code-related) bugs, and now the program will open and then close immediately. I believe I have determined that the problem is not code related as I have commented outall of the code and it still refuses to stay open until I tell it otherwise. I had a basic text file reader/writer program that wrote and read from a mapped, shared drive up and running for a couple weeks. I wanted to add just a couple more things that shouldn't have effected the program (the ability to write another text file), and now the program can't find the shared drive. The error I get is: Could not find file '<file location>' with <file location> filled in with either the mapped name of the drive (X:) or the unmapped name (\servercomputer). Both are copied directly from windows explorer, so I know the path is right. I'm a bit of a beginner, but I'm pretty sure that all the required permissions are in place, and all users have access to this drive.
To further complicate things, it is not consistant. Some commands appear to have no trouble reading off the mapped name, but don't read the unmapped name, and vice versa. Others won't take either. Sometimes the code will execute perfectly up to the middle of the code (accessing the shared drive a couple times), and then it will give this error. If anyone could point me in the right direction,

I'm looking for a way to specify the location for the User.config file that is used for storing the My.Settings object. It appears that this is not possible. The problem for me is, I don't want to be responsible for creating several different files on the users computer that really have no use and are difficult to find and clean once an update is released. For most users, this is not a serious problem, as many will probably never update the software, and most will probably only go through a couple of updates. On my system, there are config files for every build of the application, and the same to a lesser extent will be true for my beta testers.
I can understand that MS wants to make sure that no two applications will use the same location for storing application data, but a simple [UserData] [CompanyName][ApplicationName] for storing application data will probably suffice for 99.9999 percent of the legitimate applications in the world. Bogging a user's system down with erroneous files, no matter how small, is an unnecessary drain on system resources and a potential source of problems for the user. It's bad enough that most programs leave bits and pieces of themselves all over a user's system after De-installation - this to me seems only to exaggerate this problem.
Is the only way to get around this problem to write a whole new Settings Class? Is there a way to change the location of the UserConfig file to a more friendly (and more predictable) location that I am not finding for myself? It would seem that having at least the OPTION to specify a location for the User.Config file would be OBVIOUS and easy to implement, so why did they leave this out?

I have this pretty simple application, it uses a webService to transfer data to my servers DataBase. Now it is very important for me to keep this application as one single file, and not having some XML files needed for it to work, but this is the case. I think the XML file holds the information to this webService, so without it the application crashes. Is there a way to get the application to work without this XML file, or a way to put the XML inside the exe archive?

I have existing file named myapp.exe.config . What I would like to do is have a little app where user could specify path to app database. I know how to get file path but I dont know how to change existing line in myapp.exe.config file. No changes during runtime. Just simple app to change string in app.config file. I would like to enable user to select path to database and store that path in app.config file. I've never thought about it before; but I recently learned how I could modify the app.config file to add/remove trace listeners (for example, to redirect all of the Trace.WriteLine output to a text file).But I don't quite understand how it works? I know the corresponding C# code to do the same as the config (in this example) - does that code get generated/executed before my application's entry point?
