I have a VB 2003 project and I have saved dynamic settings in the app.config.exe file with success.I am using ColorDialog to change the color of textboxes. Everything works OK except I need to save the changes in the config file.I have success with saving changes for textbox.text but not colors.
View 6 RepliesI am working on a program where some application config info is stored in a Userconfig.xml file. I am loading the file as an XMLDataProvider in the XAML via relative URI:
<XmlDataProvider x:Name="UserConfigDataSource" x:Key="UserConfigDataSource" Source="UserConfig.xml" d:IsDataSource="True"/>
I have a number of items throughout bound to elements in the document and an event handler that saves to the XMLDataProvider:
Private Sub SaveConfig(ByVal sender as Object, ByVal e as System.EventArgs)
'TODO: Add event handler implementation here
Dim SavePath As String = UserConfigDataSource.Source.LocalPath.ToString
[Code]....
When this executes I get the error "This operation is not supported for a relative URI". Is there a good way to produce an absolute URI (aside from getting the assembly executing location and trimming the executable filename from the end)? I expected this to be a somewhat simple procedure.
I've been getting "Connection forcibly closed" errors and in researching a resolution, I have seen suggestions to money with the following web.config options, which currently are not set in my web app. Before I change them, I'd like to know what they are currently set to. Can someone tell me how to read these values from .NET code, preferably VB.NET, though C# is fine.

A Windows service written in VB.NET is using the My.Settings namespace for simplicity. There are only three settings to read, and these are read within the constructor of the ServiceLauncher.
I am attempting to install the service as such:
installutil GID.ServiceLauncher.exe
And this is successful, however the config settings it is using are not the ones within the GID.ServiceLauncher.exe.config file, instead it is using the ones baked into the app as Default Settings within Settings.Designer.vb (marked with DefaultSettingValueAttribute). [The questionable wisdom of Microsoft not allowing a developer to ignore default settings is another question entirely].
How can I further diagnose this issue, and maybe force a reload of settings? I tried calling My.Settings.Default.Reload, however this did nothing. All settings are application settings, and only differ by "value" from those in the auto generated file.
I have successfully attached the debugger using System.Diagnostics.Debugger.Launch() and true enough, the settings are still the default settings.
In anticipation of the question, the background: The reason for requiring configuration settings is because this is a very straightforward service that simply executes an exe; and this exe is in configurable location. There are other reasons also, such as I wish to have the service name configurable without recompiling.
i am building a web application with VS2010 and framework 4
in the web.config i have defined the external file path

I am creating a windows service in .Net 4.0 and testing some functions of said service with a windows forms client by referencing the service project.The service project has an App.config file and that file looks like this: [code]a null reference error is thrown because my connection string is not loaded.The only connectionStrings that are loaded are from the machine.config file located in [code]If I create an application scope setting for the service, I can get that setting by using the My.Settings.setting so it's not like the App.config file is not being read.why are my connectionStrings not being loaded from the App.config file?When referencing a project(parent) from another project(child), the child's app.config is used even if the parent's classes are being used.Thus, I can get the connectionStrings to show up if I copy them over to the child's app.config. When trying to open it manually, my currentDirectory was of the child, not the parent (strange how it did not throw an exception - it wouldn't have been able to find the config file it just silently used the machine.config.
View 4 RepliesI built a small website and there will be only one admin, so in the admin panel I am asking for a password with a value that I do not retrieve from a database, I just hard coded it in the function in code behind, I know this is wrong though I don't know why.
So is hard coding it in web.config the right thing to do? and how?
I would like to tweak some of the numbers in the app.exe.config file while the program is running. I would like my program to re-load those valued from the edited txt file.
I have tried my.settings.reset, reload, and upgrade. None of these seem to reload the values from the config file into the program

How can i get my program to re-read the config file into its memory once it is up and running. say when a button is clicked?
How do you read the default values from the appName.exe.config file? My application only reads these values on first installation. Subsequently, it reads the updated values sitting in the user.config file.
View 2 RepliesI have a WCF service with a setting I created in the WCF application property editor (settings tab).It has created something like the following property in MySettings class in the Settings.Designer.vb file. Notice the DefaultSettingValueAttribute is set to "This is the OLD value". That's my value for local testing.
<Global.System.Configuration.ApplicationScopedSettingAttribute(), _
Global.System.Diagnostics.DebuggerNonUserCodeAttribute(), _
Global.System.Configuration.DefaultSettingValueAttribute("This is the OLD value")> _
[code]....
The problem is after restarting the WCF service (rebooting the server machine completely), it never reads the new value. It continues to use the old value that was set as the default value in the designer file.I think this must have to do with file permissions, but I don't see anything in the event log that indicates a problem. It's like the WCF service isn't even trying to read the web.config file.Why isn't the service reading the settings value from the web.config file?
I have a vb.net 2010 windows forms application.I use an xml file to store application information.The file is in the same format as an app.config file but is NOT the app.config file.It is stored in
Environment.SpecialFolder.CommonApplicationData
I read and write to it using xmldocument and all works fine
From time to time I get calls from clients that my application won't start
On checking this xml file I find all the key/values have been deleted.example of file.........

Edit: i need to create a program to alter a web.config of lets say i web.config laying on my deskop and not the actual web.config of my project
View 7 RepliesAdded for my quick reference.When you use the following code to retrieve the values from config file in a library project.
Value = Configuration.ConfigurationManager.AppSettings("KeyName")
The application will look for this key in AppSettings section of calling assembly and may lead to unpredictable results.

View 3 Repliesi'm creating a system now using vb.net 2005, .net framework 3.5. I'm using MySQL 5.1 as my backend and I've created a role so that I'll grant the specific user if he fits with the current role. My question is how can i modify the username and password of my database connection located at machine.config file under connectionStrings? The system will be used by different users and every user has its own account in the database.
Example:
I have a user named perry. The connection string would be like this:
<add name="LocalMySqlServer" connectionString="server=localhost;user id=perry;password=pass1234;database=mysql"/>
Another user named harris:
<add name="LocalMySqlServer" connectionString="server=localhost;user id=harris;password=harRis101;database=mysql"/>
I want to save picture in app.config file,first time when i start my application picture will come from database then all the time it will come from the app.config file.I also update app.config file from front end with two fields user name and user picture

know open an xml file into a datagrid. The xml file is stored in a secured ftp with username and password. Just as an example if the site ftp.mysitesite.com, with username "xxx" and the password "XXX" has the file 123.xml, then how do I load 123 into a datagrid. Is it possible to store these info to a variable in app.Config and use that variable to access the site?

View 1 RepliesI have a question about the App.Config file. My understanding is that the connection string is stored within this file. I have setup my application so that the App.Config file is not only written to c:users<username>appdatalocal but also to c:users<username>appdataoaming. I plan to encrypt the connection string, my question at this point is will it encrypt the connection string in ALL copies of the App.Config file? It looks like at this point that the App.Config file is stored in two places on the hard drive.
View 2 RepliesI have simple columns and their respective sums. However, I exclude 1 particular value from each sum, like so [code]...
Now I need to exclude another value ("Awaiting Progression") from a second column called "PROGRESSION".
Since I already exclude value based on 1 column called CATEGORY, how do I change my =Sum(Code.ExcludeOthers(Fields!CATEGORY.Value,Fields!ACTION_PLAN_NEW.Value)) to exclude a value from the PROGRESSION column if it's = ("Awaiting Progression") ?
i.e. How do I exclude multiple values, depending on values in 2 columns in SSRS 2005?
Having a little issue with my boolean statement. It is not changing the value to true after you click it. Its a basic function just not working correctly and Im pretty stumped on why. I mean its a simple yes or no concept. The button is on or off is the basic concept.

Have read most of the null value posts here, and I have managed to get things working as far as a "next record" button for my database application form (there's some awesome advice on this forum!). I have just one question, though. How do you manage saving of blank text box values from a form? I am using JET, but when I try to save an updated file that has a null value, it is not letting me. I got around it by forcing the text boxes with null values to contain " ", but obviously this is not the bext solution!

I have a form in an application that I'm building and in it I have a datagridview that when a user clicks a checkbox on a line in the datagridview and "submits" the data, then the form will insert all of the data on that line (along with the code "Holiday") into a database. Currently if I click in the checkbox on any line other than the first line and put a line break on the "Try" statement, and then fire the submit_onclick event, I'm never reaching that break point but if I click on the checkbox on the first line and submit that data, that works and it behaves at I stated above. Here is the code as it stands currently:
Code:
Private Sub holidaysaveButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles holidaysaveButton.Click

My windows form as a bunch of textboxes on it that basically let the user put in different positions/forces that a test cycle then uses. I am trying to let the user save their profile settings/open the settings so they don't have to input the same values every time they want to run the same test. Here is my code so far. basically, when i save my csv file, and open it, all 6 textbox values are plopped in the first textbox instead of being distributed to their original boxes. I just read about a "split" function
code
Private Sub SaveProfileToolStripMenuItem_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles SaveProfileToolStripMenuItem.Click
SaveProfileDialog.ShowDialog()
