[2008] Eval Type Functionality?
Feb 8, 2009
I've written a piece of software which extracts information from the web and stores it all to a local SQL Server database which all works well. However, I now want to add additional functionality where any user can go in and create a template which would be run when every synch has complete which would save as an HTML file. I've set up whole thing. Information is stored in a backend XML file which is processed when the synch completes. However, I want this information to check delimeters in the string and process it as code.

I want to execute the code that is passed as a string to my function, the code will be passed at runtime. This is an example code that may be passed as a string to my function. p is a dataset, which is declared and has some values, this code is executed in a asp.net page
p.Tables(0).Rows(0)("disp_status") = "Approved by CEO";
p.Tables(0).Rows(0)("status") = "Approved";
Session("fnc") = "generate po";

This is probably a pretty novice design question. I'm trying to work my way through a number of requirements and give the users the experience they're looking for.I've written a tool that does big calcluation-type things. It currently consists of a class library and command line tool (separate .NET projects.) We're using an Access database format as the file type because it can keep all the various tables together in one file. A few other items about the application: There are not many users. There are no concerns with scalability. There are not great concerns with updates. Desktop is desired. Not web.Using VB and .NET 3.5 SP1
I now need to develop a GUI front end that will allow typical File/Open and File/Save type operations.Users expect that they can open a file, edit it some, then either choose to save it or close it unsaved without any changes being written back to the file. Saving it would obviously save all changes affecting all tables back to the file.
Does it then make sense to use a temp file for something like a proxy then? To, when a user "opens" a file, copy the source Access file to a local temp file and then use that for the editing session? Then, if the user "saves", copy the local temp file back to the source path?
Update: [tagged with ms-access tag too] Also, I omitted the fact that users would expect typical File / Save As functionality too. I think the design I've put in question in this post is what is traditionally called the Proxy design pattern. Has anyone tried this (successfully!) with Access database files before? Words of caution or advice?

I have a URL lets say . some time i need to send HTTP and some time i need to send it to HTTPS for that i created a enum:
Private _protocol As Protocol
Enum Protocol
HTTP
HTTPS
[CODE]...
Now when i get value back from protocoltype it returns me integer value as enum do so tell me how to get string from enum or other substitute.
Dim targetUri As String = setting.protocolType & "://www.mysite.com"

Is there a way to reset to the original vb.net snippets that came along with visual studio 2008? I recently installed a purchased third party lib, that managed to break almost all the default snippets. I can see that the snippets do physically exist in C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 9.0VBSnippets1033 but only the following sections are loaded to vs 2008:

I'm trying to finish up Visual Basic project for a class to create a playlist of files and to have them played.I have everything working if I single click the item from my list, and then click the play button in the WMP control portion of my form.I then want to add the functionality of double clicking the selection in the list and play with the following code:
[code]...
and nothing seems to happen.Digging into values of the debugger at the time I try to play the file:
[code]...
The sourceURL of the first item in the playlist is correct, but the duration is 0:00 (it should be 0:01). Since it seems there is no duration detected, nothing is played. Any idea what I missed? Again, if I single click the file, which sets the playlist as I want, then click PLAY on the GUI controls, it works fine.Also, is there any way for the program to detect when the song has changed when playing a playlist of multiple songs? I want to have label fields showing "Now Playing" information that would change info as the songs change, and maybe even change the item selected as things are played. I've not yet found a way to detect this change, only when the player starts and stops in general.

I recently upgraded to Crystal Reports 2008 for the barcoding functionality. When we use the barcode in the report designer, it renders as expected, so we installed the Crystal Reports 2008 redistributable package on our dev server to test deployment, but we receive the error message listed below. I cannot locate any information about this issue on the business objects site, or azaleas site, or any info regarding deployment of barcoding functionality.

I want to unzip files from my program, so i'm using the Shell32 functionality like so:
Module Module1
Sub Main()
Dim sc As New Shell32.Shell
Dim srcDir As Shell32.Folder = sc.NameSpace("zippath")
Dim destDir As Shell32.Folder = sc.NameSpace("destinationpath")
Dim items As Shell32.FolderItems = srcDir.Items()
destDir.CopyHere(items, 256)
End Sub
End Module
This theoretically works, but i'm unzipping an 8Gb compressed file and the dialog that pops up says it will be done in 1day, 19hours. This is ridiculous because when I just right click on the file and decompress it from there, it takes only a couple of minutes! I can't imagine what the problem is! I know that the shell process actually spawns its own thread, so I worried at first that my process was exiting before the thread could spawn and added a Thread.Sleep(1000) after destDir.CopyHere() but it had no effect.

I only want to show the credit card info section if the Eval expression evaluates to true, but it gives me and error saying I can only use it in the context of a databinding control, I know I have to put the #, but vb then says that I must use If() or IIF(). What is the correct syntax.

Is there any way to parse a string in vb.net (like, built in methods), that can do math like Eval can? For example, 3+(7/3.5) as a string would return 2.
I am not asking for you to code this for me, I just want to know if there is a built in way to do this, if there is not I will code it myself.
I can wager that it would not be able to parse stuff like Sin(90) on its own, and I understand that would need to be replaced by Math.Sin(90).

Ok so if you look at the markup of this page: [URL]
You'll see that it uses eval and unescape to make it look like this in it's markup "%73%65%6c%66%2e%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%6c and so on...."
I'm trying to make a program using httpwebrequest that will grab this long string off the website using regex then decode this and put it in a textbox. I know how to accomplish the first two parts how I could decode this in VB.

I have a repeater which takes 270 seconds to render and actually ends up crashing all browsers. The SQL to retrieve the data takes about 10 seconds. I wanted to remove the Eval's to see if that speeds up things a bit, but I am having trouble with the correct syntax. I have doubts that this would actually improve performance as I am dealing with 150,000 records. Would a GridView or other control be faster? Would using LINQ to SQL improve performance? Here is the code for the Eval:

I need to execute scripted text formulas. I believe that in VB 6 and/or VBA there was a method EVAL() that did the job, eg: [Code] As it seems, such a method does not exist in VB.NET. [url] The method works fine but due to its comprehensive layout its not that fast (as i need to call it myriad of times) Does anyone have a SIMPLE, FAST, straight forward math expression method? Or anyone knows how to use the old EVAL method in VB.NET?

<asp:TemplateField HeaderText="ObjectName" >
<ItemTemplate>
<%# Eval("Object.property")%>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>
but what I would like to do know is create this programatically at runtime
i.e. define my columns, add them to the gridview and then databind
has anyone done this or have any pointers??
