(.Net 2003) Debug Dll While It Is Being Ran In The Other Project ?
Jan 19, 2009
I have a Dll project written in VB.Net 2003 which compiles a Dll used in other projects. I need to debug this Dll while it is being ran in the other project. Does anyone know how I can do this, or do I need to integrate it into my other VB project somehow before I can debug it?

I am writing some code in VB.Net under .NET 2.0 which interfaces with MS Exchange 2003.Because of the Exchange 2003 "requirement" I am forced to write this code using WEBDAV.The code itself is replicating, to some degree,a schedule management process. It's creating Appointments on the Exchange Server in response to inputs from the user and managing it's data internally in a SQL Server database. The problem situation is this: A new person is assigned to be in charge of a meeting. The requirement says the program should generate a meeting cancellation request to the person removed from the meeting (if such a person existed) and a meeting request sent to the new person. In the case of there being an existing person, what appears to happen is this:
The meeting cancellation request
gets sent Exchange barfs and returns status code 500 (internal server error) during the set of requests which send the meeting request to the new person. However! While debugging this particular scenario, it works just fine for me, if I step through the code in the Visual Studio debugger. Left to it's own devices, it fails every time.Just for yuk's sake, I added a Thread.Sleep(500) to the part after sending the cancellation request, and Exchange doesn't barf anymore...
So, my question! If adding a Thread.Sleep to the code causes this error to go away, a race condition is implied, no? But, my code is running under a web application and is a totally single threaded process, from start to finish. The web requests I am sending are all in synchronous mode so this shouldn't be a problem. [code]....
...but a lot of the implementation details are hidden here, as I wrote a set of classes to interface with Exchange WebDAV.

I have a project that is build in VB 6.0 version. I need to launch this project locally to debug an issue. But unfortunately I don't have VB 6.0 installed on my machine and my firm is not providing this software anymore. Is there any way that I can open VB 6.0 project using other versions of Visual Studio?

I'm using VS2008, and I have a project that will not start when I press F5 or when I click the little green triangle in the toolbar. The screen flickers once, like the project is going to run, and then it doesn't. The build message claims the build was successful, but the project won't start. In the Configuration Manager, my 'Active solution configuration:' is set to Debug, and in the 'Project contexts' list, the 'Configuration' column for my Project is set to Debug. I've even switched them back and forth between Debug and Release and then back to Debug, all with no effect. The project that I'm trying to run is set as the 'Startup Project' in my solution. If I go to my inDebug folder and double-click the .exe, (which shows the proper time-stamp on the file) my app runs just fine.Any ideas why I can't get the silly thing to run in debug mode?
EDIT:
It's a winforms application.
My version of Visual Studio is 9.0.30729.1 SP

Both projects are set to build in release modeBoth projects are in the same solutionThe solution is set to build in releaseBoth projects output to a Release folder in bin / objEverything seems to be okay except for one thing. When inspecting the files with a tool such asI tracked this down to a setting in the Advnced Compiler Options for the pdb files. If the debug info output for VB is set to anything other than none - then the project builds in debug mode (keep in mind it still outputs to the release folder).

I have a VB Windows Application in Visual Studio 2003 complete with it's own setup project. What I would like to do is during the installation of that project is to install a shortcut icon on the desktop that points to the location of the .exe file that was just installed on the user's machine. Unfortunately this option in the setup is not easy to find (at least to me) on Visual Studio 2003. What would I need to do in order to get that shortcut icon to pop-up automatically?

From my DLL project I have succeded in making AutoCAD launch by pressing F5 from VB.net IDE (Visual Studio 2008) en route to try to make debugging of the DLL easier ...
... however one last obstacle is currently in the way and the obstacle is that for some reason when I hit F5 and AutoCAD is launched my breakpoints are not recognized at all... and program runs from start to finish instead of allowing me to debug ...
It issues a strange message which says "The following module was built either with optimizations enabled or without debug information... to debug this module, change its project build configuration to Debug mode..." and it is all weird because as far as I know I am not in release mode .. but in debug mode (anyhow I am relatively new to Visual Studio .NET so I am thinking that my impression could be that I am in debug mode when in actuality I maybe in release mode)...
Here is why I think I am debug mode ...
1. From Solution explorer ... when I click on the Solution Name and view its properties ... the Active config property says Debug|Any CPU
2. When I look at the properties of the project and look at the compile tab it says that the Configuration is Active (Debug) and under Platform it says Active (Any CPU).
3. Under the Advanced Compile Options of Compile Tab from project properties ... Enable optimizations is UNchecked ...
Anyhow with all the settings mentioned above it seems that I have everything okay but then the message above proves otherwise ... and so at this point I know that I am still missing something ... like a setting somewhere... wondering what else do you think am I still missing?
As additional info...there are seven projects in the solution and it is the main one (the one that I set as startup project) whose properties I refer to in all the paragraphs above.

I have a seemingly simple question I can't seem to figure out. I have an old VBA application that connects to a database using OLEDB, grabs data, and populates an excel sheet using Excel.QueryTable after the user clicks a button. I'm trying to port this rather large program to VB.NET. I've created a few projects in my solution, one of which being an ExcelWorkBook. I want this workbook to load each time users launch the program and be blank until they click a button which will populate the data.

I'm using visual studio express 2008, I wrote my code for a project and then when I tried to debug it I got a few errors but one main one that says this. Visual Studio cannot start debugging because the debug target "".exe is missing Please build the project and retry, or set the output path and assembly names appropriately to point at the correct location of the target assembly. Since this is my first time debugging a program with this particular instance of the program, I am in shock. Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

After compiling the project it works fine on windows 7 32bit and 64 bit but will not work on server 2003 or xp clients have not checked vista yet, i have verified that .net 4 is installed and i can tell you that i do not get an error message when installing apart from the icon that i have given the project does not appear and is a blank icon on the desktop. When i try to run the program it will try to start i see the service in the task manager and after a while it will error out and crash. I can see the memory usage go from 20,000K to 70.000k.

I've been assigned a web app written in VB using VStudio.net 2003. I am trying to configure the source on my localhost (VStudio 2008) so I can explore and learn about the current app (before I begin any real changes) and I cannot get debugging working for the web service project(s).
Symptom 1: "Unable to automatically step into the server. The remote procedure could not be debugged. This usually indicates that debugging has not been enabled on the server. See help for more information". This happens when I try to F11 (stepInto) the proxy class which invokes my actual web method.
Symptom 2: Pre-setting a breakpoint in my .asmx file code on the statement that will be invoked does not work (i.e. the debugger simply doesn't stop). Having described the situation, here's how my VStudio Solution is configured: Service1 - project created from the VB - WEB - ASP.NET Web Service Application template; this Service1 project contains my main .asmx source code I want to debug. Web.config for this project contains compilation defaultLanguage="vb" debug="true"

It's just a small calculator project so it's no big deal, but after I had built the project, I wanted to change the project name and all the file names that had that string in it (and all internal references to that string). I had played with this before and knew that it was asking for trouble but I thought, "What the hell, I'll try it again." feeling a bit brash.
Well, everything works fine in debug mode, but there is this DOS window that pops up just before the main form does, and it doesn't go away for the entire debugging session. I think I see that window pop up on all other projects too (if the main form doesn't cover it up completely), but normally, it's only there for a split second.
