.net - Casting DataTypes With DirectCast, CType, TryCast?
Apr 24, 2010Ever since I moved from VB6 to VB.NET somewhere in 2005, I've been using CType to do casting from one data type to another. I do this because it is simply faster to type, used to exist in VB6 and I do not know why I have to be using DirectCast if there is apparently no difference between them.I use TryCast once in a while because I understand that sometimes casting can fail. I however cannot get the difference between CType and DirectCast.

But when I tested the Nullable(Of T) Class (See NullableOfTClassTest Class, Method Main) an exception occurs when using the CType operator to convert from System.Int32.Why does this happen at runtime, why isn't my Ctype operator method being called?

VS 2008 CType Using A Variable To Hold The Type Doesn't Work

Feb 26, 2009When writing some Outlook code in VS2005, I came across a situation that, to me, does not make any sense. For reference, the version of Outlook running on this machine is Outlook 2003.The program I'm writing is designed to iterate through the emails in the inbox, to identify certain types of emails based on their subjects and bodies, and then to generate new emails based on the existing ones. However, the problem that I'm having is with simply iterating through the collection of items that comes from the Inbox folder. Specifically, what happens is that this line consistently fails on items that should be processed:

Sep 7, 2011Hmmmm having discovered that using the mciAPI doesn't utilise 5.1 sound, but using a virtual WMP does - I started a new approach to my multimedia project using some code from the net. Sep 2, 2009I have a large project where we have 2-3 dll projects that are converted from VB6 to VB.NET. We have fixed all the issues that caused compilation errors, and most of obvious issues in running, so now we have basically a program up and running. The exe is created from scratch in VB.NET, using a lot of functionality from the converted dll's (including GUI forms). What I wonder is when I run the program in debug mode, I get a bunch of warnings in the "Immediate Window" saying:
A first chance exception of type 'System.Exception' occurred in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll
...and some of other type (but most of them in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll).I was wondering if this is common in projects converted from VB6, or if it is caused by bad design in our code...

Apr 16, 2012I have a project converted from Visual Studio 2005 to Visual Studio 2010. It compiles and runs.
When I prune "unused references's from this project as listed by Visual Studio, the project fails to compile with the subject error message.
In particular one of the "unused refererences" is to "Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll". The IDE does not allow me to add back this particular reference.
What do I need to add back as a referenceto get this items?

First via the VB 2005 (open project), then days of fixing errors, etc. Then opened the VB 2005 in VB 2008 so now it is a 2008 solution.The more we try to test the worse it gets. It did start and crash with typical errors but now it does not even get off the ground.[code]The more we try to fix the earlier it crashes. The 1st form load does not even start (break point not stopped on but it did before and failed on AppFrameWorkOn = True where AppFramWorkOn is just a boolean in another module.Except same code works in other programs.We have written several dozen other VB.Net 2005 programs but this one just doesn't make sense.There is also no Configuration Manager in the Build menu.

I working on customising some Sage code and in the form there is a datagrid that is populated by a series of Sage.Accounting.Stock.TraceableSOPAllocationItems (a batched stock item allocated to an SOP).
I want to give the user some further information on each item so they can decide which batch and bin to use.
