.net - Child Type In General Function?

Apr 15, 2010

I have a MustInherit Parent class with two Child classes which Inherit from the Parent. How can I use (or Cast) Me in a Parent function as the the child type of that instance?EDIT: My actual goal is to be able to serialize (BinaryFormatter.Serialize(Stream, Object)) either of my child classes. However, "repeating the code" in each child "seems" wrong.

EDIT2: This is my Serialize function. Where should I implement this function? Copying and pasting to each child doesn't seem right, but casting the parent to a child doesn't seem right either.

When Catching A General Exception, How To Determine The Original Exception Type

Jan 11, 2010

When catching an exception in .net, you can have as many type-specific exception blocks as needed. But I usually try to have at least one "general" exception catch block. But is there a way to get the type of the "real" exception thrown that is caught by the generic exception handler, perhaps using reflection? For example, if I have

Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of InvalidUser)
ProcessModuleLoadException(Me, ex)
Catch ex As System.ServiceModel.FaultException(Of SQLExceptions)

Return An (Anonymous Type With A Function) From A Function?

Mar 3, 2011

Just so it's known, this question is mostly academic, even though I tried to use the concept in a real-world solution. I realize the example is contrived, but I believe the concept is valid.I want to write some fluent code like this:

[code]...

I realize that I can't force an anonymous type into a specific type (like implementing an interface or some other class), and I don't want the overhead of defining a specific class just to match my desired fluent name with the actual method name. So I was able to make the code work like this:

copy(my_first_file).to.Invoke(my_second_file)So there is no IntelliSense or type awareness there, and I have to include the Invoke in order to have the method run. How can I get more type safety and exclude the Invoke method, under these constraints: Anonymous Type returned from Method No additional classes or interfaces Preferably, I do not want to pass in another parameter to the copy() method that tells what type to return, unless copy becomes a generic method (but I think that means defining another class/interface, which I don't want to do)

Asp.net - Adding New Child Nodes To XML On Each Function Call?

May 12, 2012

I have an XML file and I have a function to which this XML is passed as string. I have loaded this string in Xmldocument and I need to insert few children nodes under one node. This function returns the modified XML string. I want that whenever this function is called, new child nodes are added, currently, It adds child nodes once.Do I need to overwrite the XML file ? If so, How can I replace the node with new node ( with new child nodes added) so that It has child nodes added before the function is called again ?

My code looks something like this:

Dim doc As New XmlDocument
doc.LoadXml(applicationXml)
Dim parentNode As XmlNode = doc.GetElementsByTagName("prList").Item(0)

C# - Get ALL Child Controls Of A WinForm Of A Specific Type (Button/Textbox)?

I need to get all controls on a form that are of type x, I'm pretty sure I saw that code once in the past that used something like this:

dim ctrls() as Control
ctrls = Me.Controls(GetType(TextBox))

I know I can iterate over all controls getting children using a recursive function, but wondering if there is something more easier or straightforward, maybe:

Dim Ctrls = From ctrl In Me.Controls Where ctrl.GetType Is Textbox

Invalid Cast Exception When Assigning A Parent To A Child Type?

Nov 2, 2009

I've created a class that inherits from Dictionary(Of TKey, TValue) called KeyCopyDictionary(Of TKey, TValue). I'm now trying to use a pre-existing function which returns a Dictionary(Of String, String) and assigning it to a variable of type KeyCopyDictionary(Of String, String). I'm getting an invalid cast exception. Is it not possible to assign a variable of a parent type to a variable of its child type? I've tried DirectCast and CType to no avail on this...

Recursive Relationship, Master/detail-type Form, And Child Datagridview?

Apr 16, 2009

I have a form that is set up like a master/detail form - fields on top with a child grid below. The difference here is that the child grid is reflective of a recursive relationship. That is the ID of the master has a one-to-many relationship with another attribute called "parent." the child grid displays all the children for that parent. It works properly except when a new record is being added to the master. My issue is that when the user clicks on the Add New button, the child grid then displays all the available parent records in the system instead of an empty grid. Once the new master (parent) record is saved, the grid reverts to proper behavior. Thus, my question: How do I prevent the child grid from displaying all the parent records when a new master (parent) record is being added?

Function Without Return Type?

Dec 23, 2010

In my project (which I inherited from someone) there are a lot of functions like:

Public Function DoSomething(ByVal s As String)
' Do something to public properties
End Function

And they are called like this:

DoSomething(s)

So the return value is ignored (which is object, as I see in the docs). Is it safe to change all these functions to Subs? Could I break something which isn't so obvious?

Detect Variable *name* (not Type) Within A Function?

Jun 12, 2009

So, let's say I have this code (VB.Net)[code]...

What I don't like is:

- relies upon reflection

- loosely typed (no compile time checking)

- I'd rather store the binding information somewhere other than ID, but don't know where else it could go within the aspx definition. Moving the binding declaration to the code behind would be better in some ways, but worse in others.

Differentiate Return Type Of A Function?

Mar 27, 2012

I know a little about using a user specified type IE IIf(Of ReturnType)(ByVal expression as Boolean, ByVal TruePart As ReturnType, ByVal FalsePart As ReturnType) As ReturnType...Which works, however I've been trying to get this to work, but can't..

Protected Function InverseSign(Of ReturnType)(ByVal value As Double) As ReturnType
Dim result As String
Select Case Math.Sign(value)
Case -1: result = "+" & Math.Abs(value).ToString()

[code]....

Using try cast just gives me the error saying ReturnType has no class-constraints? whatever that means..But my goal here is to be able to return either a string or double.. However every method I've tried to convert my result string to the ReturnType doesn't work.I've also tried simply overloading the function, but I can't because they only differ by return type. So that didn't work either.

VB6 - Call A Function With CreateObject ( Type )?

Sep 1, 2010

I have a dll ( vb6 ) containing a public class with a public Type ( named Test ) and finally a public function that wants a variable passed by ref of Test type. Obiouvsly, if I reference that dll in a new project ( vb6 ) I can see the public function and the Test type I must use...the problem comes when I must call that dll creating it at runtime without any reference, using in example CreateObject. Can I reference in some way the type Test inside the dll by having created it at runtime? If I declare a type IDENTICAL to the Test type in a public class in my new project, VB issues a TypeMismatch error even if both data type are the designed the same say, have the same name and so on! how it comes?

Any Function For Listing Out All The Files Of A Specified Type In A Folder In VB6

Apr 8, 2009

I would like to know if there are some in built functions for the scenario that is described below :

The input is the path of a parent folder. Wat the function must do is , it should list out all the .zip files inside that parent folder. The parent folder can contain any number of subfolders, and the same applies to the subfolders too ..

VB version is not a barricade. Any of the versions VB6 or VS2005 can do. Also is there any other alternative way if there are no inbuilt functions as such.
