.net - Environment.MachineName Returns A Zero Length String?
May 18, 2011
I am chasing a strange error at a customer site and was wondering if it is possible that Environment.MachineName could return a zero length string. The docs say this is read from the registry but doesn't specify where. I can't imagine that a machine cannot have a netbios name but just wanted to ask.
EDIT
After some investigation, it appears that this was not returning a zero length string, but I was just interested if it is feasible.

By my logic, this should only assign .length to index IF the length of strItem is longer than 0. This check is there in case the listbox is empty, or the user has not selected an item. However, everytime I go through this code without an item selected I get:

If using the following in an if statement I get an error: If trg.Name.Substring(4, 6).ToUpper <> ("ABCDEF") Then I get the error: "Index and length must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: length"
I assume this is because the string (trg.name) is too small for the 4, 6 substring. What would be the correct method of working around this problem? VB.net Studio 2008.

P.S. This was a VB6 command line app that I just converted to VB.net & the behaviour only occurs in the VB.net version. It's being called in many places at the moment, so don't really want to have to manually go through all calls & add double quotes around the whole argument.

just found out that replace(string does not do the same as string.replace when my string variable was an empty str the first one returns "nothing" and the second returns an empty string (as expected).just sloppy coding anyhow, it was a function that was converted from classic asp and never rewritten properly. I'm writing some code that takes a report from the mainframe and converts it to a spreadsheet. They can't edit the code on the MF to give me a delimited file, so I'm stuck dealing with it as fixed width. It's working okay now, but I need to get it more stable before I release it for testing. My problem is that in any given line of data, say it could have three columns of numbers, each five chars wide at positions 10, 16, and 22. If on this one particular row, there's no data for the last two cols, it won't be padded with spaces; rather, the length of the string will be only 14. So, I can't just blindly have

With setting the string length. I have got a streamreader reading from a .doc file into a listbox and then i want to set the string length of how long it to be and then if longer to go to the next line so it will fit in the listbox as the listbox you cant scroll accross but you can up and down.
Ive done this so far:
Try
Dim file_name As String = "K:\Uni\Year 2\Visual Basic\Report\MSDN\Absolute Beginner's Series VB Lesson 1\01 VB Lesson Transcript.doc"

I have a .Net program that has to run on a cluster of server 2008. To find out the right IP I resolve the dns by GetHostEntry(VarDefinedInfConfig).AddressList(0)
but when I am converting my old code (this code picks the wrong IP) dns.GetHostName().AddressList(0) => this returns a virtual IP and not the right one.So I changed my TcpListener to (dns is parameter from config)Dim listener As TcpListener = New TcpListener(New IPEndPoint(Net.Dns.GetHostEntry(dns).AddressList(0), 8001))
listener.Start()

"GetPrivateProfileStringA" (ByVal lpApplicationName As String, _
ByVal lpKeyName As String, _
ByVal lpDefault As String, _
ByVal lpReturnedString As String, _
ByVal nSize As Integer, ByVal lpFileName As String) As Integer
Dim value As String = ""
Dim length As Integer
Dim IniFileName As String
GetPrivateProfileString("Config", "UserName", "None", value, length, IniFileName)
but value contains an empty string I confes to being a VB n00b, less than a week, in fact, but I can't see what's wrong there. The file exists, it contains a section called "Config" which has an entry called "UserName" with a value - but even if not, wouldn't value take the default?
Edit: It's not returning an empty string - it's returning whatever I initialize value to before calling GetPrivateProfileString().
Which is to say that if I Dim value As String = "xxx" then it stil contains "xxx" after the call and not the default value.

I've created some classes that will be used to provide data to stored procedures in my database. The varchar parameters in the stored procs have length specifications (e.g. varchar(6) and I'd like to validate the length of all string properties before passing them on to the stored procedures.
Is there a simple, declarative way to do this?
I have two conceptual ideas so far:
Attributes
public class MyDataClass
{
[MaxStringLength = 50]
[Code]....
This seems like a lot of work and will really make my currently-simple classes look pretty ugly, but I suppose it will get the job done. It will also take a lot of copying and pasting to get this right.

I am working on a program that will take in a string of length 7 containing either R,G or B for the colours. The program will then check that the string if 7 in length and if it contains any other characters than R, G or B then it will be invalid. I created this code but when I enter the right string length and characters it always gives me the error for not having the right string length.

Dim valid As Boolean
Dim position As Integer
